THE SCDS MAY LEAK INTERNALLY AND THEN OVERHEAT, SMOKE, OR BURN.
Remedy: FORD WILL NOTIFY OWNERS THAT DEALERS WILL INSTALL A FUSED WIRING HARNESS IN LINE WITH THE SCDS. ON 1999-2003 WINDSTAR VEHICLES WITH A LEAKING SCDS, DEALERS WILL ALSO INSPECT THE ABS CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR AND REPAIR AS NECESSARY. REPAIRS WILL BE COMPLETED FREE OF CHARGE. THE DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT BELT COMES UNBUCKLED WITHOUT THE LATCH BEING TOUCHED WHILE DRIVING. THIS RESULTS IN AN UNSAFE SITUATION WHERE THE SEAT BELT ISN'T PROVIDING ANY SAFETY AND IT ALSO REQUIRES TWO HANDS TO RE-BUCKLE IT TAKING MY HANDS OFF THE STEERING WHEEL. THIS HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING IN MY DRIVEWAY, ON CITY STREETS AND HIGHWAYS. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN HAPPENING SOON AFTER I BOUGHT THE TRUCK USED ON NOVEMBER 10, 2004.

ON SEPTEMBER 12, 2011, A KUMHO ROAD VENTURE AT TIRE, SIZE LT235/85R16, DOT K2ORYD4A3508 (MANUFACTURED AT KUMHO?S BINH DUONG PLANT IN VIETNAM IN THE 35TH WEEK OF 2008) SUFFERED A CATASTROPHIC TREAD SEPARATION, RESULTING IN SEVERE INJURIES TO THE FRONT SEAT PASSENGER OF THE FORD F-250 AND THE DEATH OF HER SON, WHO WAS 32 WEEKS OLD AND STILL IN UTERO. A LAWSUIT HAS BEEN FILED AGAINST KUMHO TIRE CO., INC. AND KUMHO TIRE U.S.A., INC. IN THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE DISTRICT OF KANSAS (CASE NO. 2:13-CV-02393-JTM-TJJ). DURING THE DISCOVERY STAGE OF THE CASE, THE PASSENGER RETAINED TROY COTTLES, A RENOWNED TIRE FAILURE EXPERT. AFTER INSPECTING THE SUBJECT TIRE, MR. COTTLES FOUND THE FOLLOWING DEFECTS IN THE SUBJECT TIRE: (1) INADEQUATE BONDING BETWEEN BELTS (TRAPPED AIR/STEAM BLISTER IMPRESSIONS); (2) PREMATURE OXIDATION OF THE BELT SKIMS; (3) BELTING DEFECTS (COINCIDENTAL BELT ENDINGS, IRREGULAR BELT WIRE SPACING, GAPPED BELT SPLICES, DOG-EARED SPLICES, SNAKING, AND SPREAD CABLES); (4) CORD SHADOWS ON THE INNERLINER; (5) LOW TOP BELT WIDTH TO TREAD WIDTH RATIO; AND (6) INADEQUATE APPLICATION OF NYLON CAP PLIES. AS PART OF HIS WORK ON THE CASE, MR. COTTLES TESTED TWO EXEMPLAR KUMHO ROAD VENTURE AT TIRES OF THE SAME SIZE AS THE SUBJECT TIRE THAT WERE ALSO MANUFACTURED AT KUMHO?S VIETNAM PLANT. BOTH OF THOSE TIRES FAILED IN SIDEWALL FAILURE MODE IN APPROXIMATELY 10,000 MILES OR LESS UNDER PROPER LOADS, INFLATIONS, AND SPEEDS THAT WERE MONITORED DAILY. WE HAD TRAVELED APROXIMATELY 450 MILES AND ON THE LAST LEG OF A TRIP IN THE MOUNTAINS. THE DRIVER NOTICED ON THE LAST 150 MILES OF THE TRIP THE STEERING WHEEL HAD CHANGED POSITION WHERE THE CENTER OF THE WHEEL NORMALLY WAS HORIZONTAL, WAS NOW 45 DEGREES OFF AND VERTICAL. THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED ON ARRIVAL TO DESTINATION. THE NEXT DAY THE VEHICLE NEEDED TO BE MOVED AND UNLOADED WHEN THIS WAS ATTEMPTED THE STEERING WHEEL JUST TURNED WITH NOT CONTROL OF THE WHEELS. SO WE WERE UNABLE TO MOVE THE VEHICLE. AFTER AN INITIAL INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE AND IT WAS PLACED ON A FLOOR JACK TO RAISE THE FRONT END TO LOOK FOR PROBLEMS UNDER THE VEHICLE. AFTER TURNING THE WHEELS MANUALLY IT WAS NOTICED THE ARM THAT COMES FROM THE STEERING BOX WAS LOOSE AT THE ELBOW. AFTER CLOSER INSPECTION IT WAS FOUND THAT THE ENTIRE SHAFT WAS SHEERED OFF AT THE STEERING BOX. WE WERE LUCK IT FAILED WHEN WE WERE NOT ON THE ROAD. IT MUST DID THE FINAL FAILURE WHEN WE DROVE INTO OUR DRIVE WAY AND PARKED. THIS MIGHT HAVE BEEN A DISASTEROUS ACCIDENT IF THIS HAD FAILED WHILE WE WERE DRIVING ON THE MOUNTAIN ROADS WE HAD JUST DRIVEN ON OUR TRIP.
FOR ABOUT 7 MONTHS, MY SON HAS BEEN DRIVING THE 2001 F250 SD UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY INSTANCES WHERE THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT SEAT BELT HAS UNLATCHED ON ITS OWN. IT HAS ALSO HAPPENED TO ME WHILE DRIVING. THE TRUCK WAS TAKEN BACK TO FORD DEALERSHIP ON 3/7/03 UNDER RECALL 01S21 SEATBELT. "BUCKLES WERE INSPECTED, OK AS PER 01S21, NO REPAIRS NEEDED." WE WERE CHARGED $27.16 FOR THE INSPECTION. TOOK THE TRUCK BACK TO DEALERSHIP TODAY (5.27.15). THEY HAVE NO ADVICE FOR US. THERE ARE MANY OPEN COMPLAINTS FOR THIS PROBLEM. I CURRENTLY OWN A 2001 F250 7.3 DIESEL TRUCK. I ALONG WITH MANY OTHER PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY ARE SCARED TO DRIVE THEIR TRUCKS. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL INCIDENTS, BUT THE MOST RECENT WAS IN AUGUST 2011. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH ( THE SPEED DOESN'T MATTER FOR THE FAILURE). THE TRUCK IS VERY HARD TO KEEP CONTROL OF, IT SHAKES VIOLENTLY AND WALKS BACK AND FORTH. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO KEEP THE TRUCK IN ONE LANE. IT GOT SO BAD THAT I COULDN'T KEEP CONTROL OF IT AND BEGAN GOING FROM ONE SIDE TO THE OTHER TRYING TO GET CONTROL. OTHER VEHICLE'S ON THE ROAD GOT AWAY FROM MINE OR I WOULD HAVE HIT THEM. IT TOOK A WHILE TO GET CONTROL OF THE TRUCK. I DON'T KNOW HOW WE DIDN'T GO FLYING OFF THE HIGHWAY AND KILLED. ON VACATION IN MAINE WITH MY 2001 FORD F250 SUPER DUTY I WAS DRIVING DOWN A VERY NARROW, HEAVILY WOODED TWO LANE ROAD AT ABOUT 20 MPH, SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING A LOUD BANG UNDER THE HOOD OCCURRED. DIFFICULT TO PULL OVER SAFELY AND INVESTIGATE. I HAD TO DRIVE SEVERAL HUNDRED FEET TO TRY TO GET ON A STRAIGHT AWAY FOR SAFETY. AFTER GETTING THE TRUCK TO A REPAIR FACILITY THE OWNER/MECHANIC INFORMED ME THAT THIS 5.4L TRITON ENGINE DOES THIS ALL THE TIME. HE INFORMED ME THAT HE REPAIRS TWO OR THREE OF THESE A WEEK, IN FACT THERE IS A "REPAIR KIT" AVAILABLE FROM MOST AUTO PART STORES. DOING SOME RESEARCH AFTER GETTING HOME I DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A CHRONIC FORD PROBLEM THAT THEY REFUSE TO ADDRESS. I WILL BE SELLING THIS TRUCK BECAUSE IT IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE FOR ME. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD F-250 SUPER DUTY. THE CONTACT STATED THE TRANSMISSION WAS LEAKING WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH. THE TRANSMISSION PREVIOUSLY LEAKED ON TWO OCCASIONS AND THE CONTACT HAD TAKEN THE VEHICLE THE DEALER EACH TIME THE FAILURE OCCURRED. THE DEALER REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION PUMP, TORQUE CONVERTER, AND O- RINGS. AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED THE TRANSMISSION CONTINUED TO LEAK. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER REGARDING THE LEAK AND THEY STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WARRANTY EXPIRED AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO TO ASSIST HIM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 134,000.
I HAD ANOTHER UNIROYAL LIBERATOR TIRE (265/75/16 E-RATED, LIGHT TRUCK TIRE) FAILURE. BOTH TIRES FAILED WITHIN ONE THOUSAND MILES OF EACH OTHER AND IN THE SAME EXACT WAY. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA ON THE FIRST TIRE APPROX. 2-MONTHS AGO. BOTH TIRES AT ABOUT 35 TO 36,000 MILES, WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS APPROACHING 65 MPH FORMED A BALLOON ON TOP OF THE TREAD CAUSING AN IMBALANCE. AFTER CHANGING THE TIRE, IT EXPLODED IN THE BED OF MY TRUCK. IT WAS OBVIOUS TO ME THAT A TREAD SEPARATION HAD OCCURRED. ONE COULD SEE THE SMOOTH AREAS WHERE THE TREAD HAD SEPARATED FROM THE BELT CARCASS VERSUS THE AREA WHERE THE TREAD PULLED AWAY WHEN IT EXPLODED. THESE UNIROYAL LIBERATORS SHOULD BE RECALLED BECAUSE OF HOW QUICKLY THIS FAILURE OCCURS. BOTH TIRES HAD PLENTY OF TREAD AND WERE RUN WITHIN THE PROPER PRESSURE RANGES (70 TO 80 PSI). I HAVE SENT UNIROYAL EMAIL COMPLAINTS CONCERNING THESE TIRES. I HAVE ONE REMAINING ON MY TRUCK THAT WILL BE REPLACED BECAUSE I KNOW IT WILL ALSO FAIL ANY MOMENT. ALL FACILITIES CERTIFIED ALL STEERING PARTS IN ORIGINAL SPECIFICATION FORM. DESPITE ALL THIS, THE TRUCK WOULD SHAKE VIOLENTLY UPON HITTING ANY KIND OF ROUGH ROADS OR POTHOLES. OWNERS CAN GET THE CREDIT TOWARD PURCHASE OF NEW OR USED FORD TRUCKS MODELS THAT DO NOT SUFFER FROM THIS DEFECT. THE KEYS WERE NOT IN THE IGNITION AT THE TIME OF FAILURE. THE CONTACT DISCONNECTED AND RECHARGED THE BATTERY. ONCE THE BATTERY WAS REINSTALLED IN THE VEHICLE, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START. HE THEN CONTACTED SEVERAL LOCAL MECHANICS ABOUT THE FAILURE BUT NO ONE COULD PROVIDE AN EXPLANATION OF THE FAILURE. SEVERAL AUTHORIZED DEALERS WERE ALSO CONTACTED BUT AGAIN THEY TOO, COULD NOT PROVIDE AN EXPLANATION FOR THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE DID NOT RECUR AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED TO REPORT THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 113,000.
