What Are Technical Service Bulletins?

Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) are documents issued by vehicle manufacturers to inform dealership technicians about known problems and recommended repair procedures. Unlike safety recalls, TSBs do not require mandatory repairs — they serve as guidance for diagnosing and fixing common issues.

TSBs are valuable for vehicle owners because they reveal patterns of problems that the manufacturer has acknowledged. If your vehicle has a persistent issue covered by a TSB, your dealer may already have a documented fix procedure.

NHTSA collects these bulletins from manufacturers as part of their safety monitoring program. The data on this page covers manufacturer communications received by NHTSA from 1955 to 2024.

Frequently Asked Questions

A recall is a mandatory safety fix ordered by NHTSA — the manufacturer must repair every affected vehicle for free. A TSB is an advisory document from the manufacturer that describes a known problem and its fix, but repairs are not required. However, some TSBs eventually lead to recalls if the problem is safety-related.
TSB repairs are not automatically free. If your vehicle is still under warranty, the repair described in a TSB should be covered at no cost. If your warranty has expired, you may need to negotiate with the dealership or manufacturer. Some TSBs include extended warranty or goodwill repair programs.
Check the TSBs for the specific make, model, and year you're considering. A high number of TSBs may indicate a model with known issues. Look for TSBs related to expensive components (transmission, engine) as these could signal costly future repairs.
This database contains manufacturer communications received by NHTSA through early 2024. The data includes 172,063 unique bulletins covering 880 vehicle makes from 1955 to 2025.
