THE SCDS MAY LEAK INTERNALLY AND THEN OVERHEAT, SMOKE, OR BURN.
Remedy: FORD WILL NOTIFY OWNERS THAT DEALERS WILL INSTALL A FUSED WIRING HARNESS IN LINE WITH THE SCDS. ON 1999-2003 WINDSTAR VEHICLES WITH A LEAKING SCDS, DEALERS WILL ALSO INSPECT THE ABS CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR AND REPAIR AS NECESSARY. REPAIRS WILL BE COMPLETED FREE OF CHARGE. WE HAVE STARTED TO NOTICE THAT WHEN DRIVING AT A STEADY SPEED THE TRUCK WILL STALL AND LOSE POWER AS IF IT WAS OUT OF GAS. THIS HAS HAPPEN TOO MANY TIMES AND HAS BECOME SUCH A SCARE THAT WE ARE COMPLETELY PARANOID TO DRIVE THE TRUCK WITHOUT THE FEAR OF BEING REAR ENDED. AT TAKE OFF THE TRUCK WILL SOMETIMES JOLT FORWARD VIOLENTLY. WE HAVE NOTICED AND RECORDED THAT THESE PROBLEMS OCCUR ONLY WHEN THE TRUCK GETS TO HALF A TANK. THE PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN SO BAD THAT AFTER A COMPLETE FILL UP THE TRUCK WILL NOW JUST CUT OFF WHILE BEING OPERATED ON THE HIGHWAY AND HAVE TO BE RESTARTED. WE HAVE SEVERAL FORD VEHICLES BOTH PERSONAL AND FOR OUR FLEET VEHICLES. THE FUEL FILTERS ARE BECOMING COMPLETELY CLOG UP DUE TO THE POOR CONDITION OF THE FUEL TANKS THEMSELVES. WE HAVE SPENT COUNTLESS HOURS RESEARCHING THESE PROBLEMS, AND SPENT EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF MONEY TRYING TO FIX/REPAIR THESE PROBLEMS. IT SADDENS US THAT WE HAVE BECOME JUST ANOTHER ADDED UNSATISFIED LOYAL CUSTOMER TO FORD, WHOM HAS NO THOUGHT OF CORRECTING THIS PROBLEM. (1999 FORDS SUPER DUTY EXTENDED CAB 4X4 WITH 5.4) DRIVING HOME FROM WORK ON THE FREEWAY AND BANG SO PULLED OVER TO DISCOVER A BLOWN SPARK PLUG AND BROKEN COIL, HAD CAR TOWED HOME FOR $200 AND TAKING IT IN TO HAVE AUTOMOTIVE SHOP FIX THE BLOWN-OUT SPARK PLUG AND CHECK ALL OTHER PLUGS , WIRES, COILS, ESTIMATED AROUND $560 PLUS PARTS. THE SECOND BLOWN-OUT SPARK PLUG HAPPENED 47 DAYS LATER AND HAD TO TOW IT AGAIN NOW JUST SITTING IN THE DRIVEWAY. CAN'T AFFORD TO HAVE IT FIXED. FORD SHOULD HAVE RECALLED THIS DESIGN DEFECT ON THE HEADS. UPON INVESTIGATION, THE RIGHT REAR BRAKE LINE HAD CHAFFED A HOLE ON THE FRAME RAIL RESULTING IN A LOSS OF BRAKES. HAD THIS BRAKE LINE FAILED AT ANY OTHER TIME, RATHER JUST BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY, IT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN DIRE CONSEQUENCES.

THE REAR TIRES ON MY PICK UP TRUCK FAILED - THE TREAD SEPARATED - WHILE I WAS OPERATING ON A ROUTE 81 IN VA. THE TIRES FAILED WITHIN 100 MILES OF EACH OTHER AND THEY BOTH FAILED THE SAME WAY. THE CONTACT ALSO NOTICED THAT ONE OF THE DRIVER SIDE TIRES WAS DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE THROUGH THE DRIVERS SIDE MIRROR. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE AT THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD BEFORE THE VEHICLE DROPPED TO THE GROUND. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTO REPAIR SHOP FOR INSPECTION BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY AND A MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE REAR DRIVER SIDE RIM WAS FATIGUED OR DISINTEGRATED AND CAUSED THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS DECLARED AS DESTROYED AS A RESULT OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 180,000.

THE CONTACT STATED THIS WAS A COMMON FAILURE WITH HIS YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 167,000.

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
SPARK PLUG THREAD DEFECT IN #2 CYLINDER CAUSING LOW COMPRESSION AND POSSIBLE BENT VALVE DAMAGED BY PLUG DEBRIS. THE CYLINDER WILL NEED TO BE REMOVED TO CORRECT PROBLEM. THIS IS A KNOWN CONDITION WITH FORD AND THE 5.4 TYPE ENGINE AND THEY IGNORE THERE RESPONSIBILITY COMPLETELY. THE REPAIR IS AT A COST OF ABOUT TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS AND THEY SHOULD TAKE SOME ALLOWANCE TO CUSTOMERS THAT OWN THERE PRODUCT.
