Understanding Vehicle Safety Data

RecallCheck organizes vehicle safety data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) into searchable profiles for every manufacturer, model, and model year. A recall campaign is issued when a safety defect is found in a vehicle's design or manufacturing, this could be anything from a faulty airbag to a brake line that corrodes prematurely. By federal law, the manufacturer must notify owners and provide a free repair.

Consumer complaints are reports filed directly by vehicle owners who experienced a safety problem. NHTSA uses these reports to identify potential defects that may warrant an investigation or recall. Each complaint includes the specific component involved, a description of the problem, and flags for crashes, fires, injuries, or deaths. High complaint volumes for a specific vehicle can signal a pattern that NHTSA investigators should examine.

Safety data should be one factor, not the only factor, when evaluating a vehicle. Production volume, vehicle age, and the severity of reported issues all matter. A manufacturer with a million vehicles on the road will naturally have more complaints than one with ten thousand. Use this data to compare vehicles within the same class and make informed decisions about purchases, maintenance, and recall repairs.
