Frequently Asked Questions
Recalls and investigations come from NHTSA's defect database. Consumer complaints come from NHTSA's complaint filings. TSB (Technical Service Bulletins) come from NHTSA's manufacturer-submitted service bulletins. Safety ratings come from NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program (5-star ratings). Fuel economy comes from the EPA / fueleconomy.gov dataset.
Higher numbers can reflect either a higher rate of problems OR a higher production volume — a mass-market sedan will accumulate more reports than a niche sports car simply because more were sold. Use the comparison alongside production volume context and the safety rating to draw conclusions.
NHTSA only crash-tests a subset of new vehicles each year; older models, heavy-duty trucks, and certain low-volume vehicles may not have published ratings. EPA fuel economy data is available for almost all light-duty vehicles, but rare trims or work-only configurations may be missing.
