Frequently Asked Questions

All aviation event data comes from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Aviation Accident Database. The NTSB investigates every civil aviation accident in the United States and significant incidents involving commercial air carriers. Our database contains 30,358 events.

An accident is an occurrence where any person suffers death or serious injury, or the aircraft receives substantial damage. An incident is an occurrence other than an accident that affects or could affect the safety of operations. Both are investigated and documented by the NTSB.

Each aviation event is classified by the highest injury severity among all persons involved. Fatal means at least one death occurred. Serious means hospitalization or significant injury without fatality. Minor means injuries that did not require hospitalization. None means no injuries were reported.

The database includes events from the NTSB Aviation Accident Database spanning decades of aviation safety records. Some recent events may have pending investigations. Final reports typically take 12–24 months to complete after an accident.
