Frequently Asked Questions

All data is sourced from publicly available US federal databases including EPA SDWIS (Safe Drinking Water Information System), EPA Superfund and Toxics Release Inventory, OSHA Severe Injury Reports, CMS Nursing Home Compare, FHWA National Bridge Inventory, USACE National Inventory of Dams, PHMSA pipeline incident reports, and FRA railroad crossing inventory. Each section in the report links to the underlying record so you can verify.

Different datasets update at different cadences. Water violations and OSHA incident reports are updated monthly. EPA Superfund and TRI are updated annually after reporting deadlines. Bridge inventory is published annually by FHWA. Dam inventory is updated by USACE as states submit revisions. Pipeline incidents update from PHMSA notices. Railroad accident counts come from FRA case files.

The federal Bridge Inventory and National Inventory of Dams record condition data by structure but do not include ZIP-level metadata for every record. To give you a relevant total, we aggregate to state for bridges and to county or state for dams. Click through to see the individual structures rated Poor or High Hazard.

The data is informational. A high number of records does not necessarily mean a neighborhood is unsafe — densely populated areas naturally produce more reports of every type. Use the report as one input among many, alongside school ratings, crime statistics, flood maps, and an in-person visit. For specific concerns (e.g. lead in water), follow up with your local utility or municipality.
