LAST YEAR THE NHTB ISSUED A RECALL FOR THE 1994 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE'S ISSUE WITH THE GAS TANK PLACEMENT. IT WAS STATED EACH EFFECTED JEEP WOULD RECEIVE A NOTIFICATION FROM CHRYSLER TO INSTALL A TRAILER HITCH IN THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE TO PREVENT THE GAS TANK FROM ERUPTING. EACH TIME I CALL CHRYSLER/JEEP AT THE 1-800 NUMBER, I RECEIVE "THE PARTS ARE ON ORDER AS WELL AS THERE IS A SHORTAGE OF PARTS". THIS HAS GONE ON FOR 11 MONTHS NOW WITH NO RESOLUTION IN SITE. HOW LONG IS CHRYSLER ALLOWED TO PUT OFF INSTALLING THE TRAILER HITCHES ON THE VEHICLES? I PURCHASED A NEW WRANGLER IN APRIL 14 WITHOUT A TRAILER HITCH AND REQUESTED ONE BE PUT ON AND WITHIN A MONTH THE DEALERSHIP INSTALLED THE HITCH. SO IS THERE REALLY A SHORTAGE? FOR AT LEAST A YEAR NOW THEY HAVE BEEN TRYING TO HAVE YOU RECALL JEEP GRAND CHEROKEES YEARS 1993-2004. THEY SAY THERE HAVE BEEN AT LEAST 64 DEATHS DUE TO THIS DEFECT. JUST YESTERDAY, A FAMILY OF 4 WAS OUT ON A DRIVE WHEN THEY WERE REARENDED. THE JEEP BURST INTO FLAMES. THE PAPERS AND NEWS CHANNELS SAY THE GAS TANK WAS IN THE WRONG PLACE AND IT JUST COULDN'T BE STOPPED. THE ENTIRE FAMILY, TWO CHILDREN, AGES 4 AND 11, AND THE PARENTS WERE KILLED IN THIS ACCIDENT. 1994 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE CAUGHT ON FIRE DUE TO SMALL SPARE TIRE. **CC THE CONSUMER HAD A FLAT TIRE AND CHANGED IT WITH THE FACTORY SPARE PROVIDED. ABOUT 10-15 MILES DOWN THE ROAD THE CONSUMER HEARD A POP AND THOUGHT HE HAD ANOTHER FLAT. HE EXITED THE VEHICLE AND SAW SMOKE AND FLAMES COMING OUT OF THE DIFFERENTIAL CASE. THE CONSUMER RAN A SAFE DISTANCE AND WATCH THE VEHICLE BURN BECAUSE THERE WAS NOTHING HE COULD DO. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED SHORTLY AFTER AND EXTINGUISHED THE FLAMES. WORKING 450 MILES FROM MY HOME I WAS GOING THROUGH AN INTERSECTION I HEARD AN AWFUL SOUND OF METAL CLUNKING AROUND IN ENGINE (LOUD). PULLED INTO A REPAIR SHOP AND WAS INFORMED THAT I HAD A VERY BAD EXHAUST LEAK. THE RATTLING HAS STOPPED UPON MY ARRIVAL SO HE NEVER HEARD IT. MAN INFORMED ME TO TAKE IT SLOW ON WAY HOME BUT GET IT LOOKED AT VERY SOON.ON MY WAY BACK, THE RADIATOR FAN STARTED MARKING A NOISE LIKE IT WAS HITTING SOMETHING. PULLED OVER AND SAW THAT A BOLT WAS READY TO FALL OF THE FAN. TIGHTENED AS BEST AS I COULD &. ALSO NOTICED THAT A BOLT TO THE SHROUD MISSING. ALSO SAW THAT THE FAN BLADES HAS SHEARED OFF THE BOTTOM OF THE SHROUD. CUT WAS FRESH. NOW THE FAN WAS STILL HITTING THE SHROUD BUT ONLY WHEN I ACCELERATED FOR TAKE OFF. NEXT DAY, JEEP RUNNING LOUD & ROUGH.UPON RETURNING HOME, MECHANIC CRAWLED UNDER AND IMMEDIATELY COULD SEE THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE RIGHT MOTOR MOUNT. HE THEN LOOKED AT THE ENGINE AND NOTICED THAT IT WAS NOT SITTING LEVEL. CONCLUSIONS WERE FORMED THAT DUE TO THE ENGINE DROPPING FROM 3 BOLTS SHEARING OFF THE RIGHT MOUNT (ONLY ONE BOLT REMAINED!), EVERYTHING HAD STARTED TO MALFUNCTION. THE EXHAUST LEAK WAS DUE TO THE SHIFTING OF THE ENGINE. ALSO, BRAKES WERE STARTING TO FAIL. FAN HITTING DUE TO THE ENGINE SHIFT. WILL INFORM YOU OF THE ACTUAL NECESSARY REPAIRS AS I AM MADE AWARE OF THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE. THIS APPEARS TO BE A VERY SERIOUS AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL ON THIS. THE TRANSFER CASE ON THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE UNIT MAKES A "CREAKING" NOISE AFTER IT HAS BEEN DRIVEN FOR MORE THAN 20 MILES. THE NOISE IS MOST EVIDENT ON COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP AND THEN TURNING (EITHER LEFT OR RIGHT) AFTER ABOUT 20 MILES. I HAVE REPLACED THE DRIVE SHAFT UNIVERSALS AND INSPECTED THE CV JOINT IN AN EFFORT TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE ALSO HAD THE REAR TRANSFER CASE SEAL REPLACED, ALTHOUGH IT HAS BEEN LEAKING FLUID AT A VERY SLOW RATE SINCE IT WAS REPLACED BY MY MECHANIC. I HAD TWO DIFFERENT MECHANICS INSPECT THE PROBLEM AND THEY ARE UNABLE TO ISOLATE THE PROBLEM OTHER THAN IT EMANATES FROM THE AREA OF THE TRANSFER CASE. THE VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN 65,000 MILES ON IT, A TRANSFER CASE SHOULD NOT FAIL WITH MILEAGE SO LOW.*JB
