FORD IS RECALLING MODEL YEARS 1995-2003 WINDSTAR, 2000-2003 EXCURSION DIESEL, 1993-1997 AND 1999-2003 F-250 SD THROUGH F-550 SD DIESEL, 1992-2003 E-150 THROUGH E-550, 1995-2002 EXPLORER, 1997 AND 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER, 1995-1997 AND 2001-2003 RANGER, AND 1994 F53 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE TEXAS INSTRUMENTS SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH (SCDS). THE SCDS MAY LEAK INTERNALLY AND THEN OVERHEAT, SMOKE, OR BURN.
Remedy: FORD WILL NOTIFY OWNERS THAT DEALERS WILL INSTALL A FUSED WIRING HARNESS IN LINE WITH THE SCDS. ON 1999-2003 WINDSTAR VEHICLES WITH A LEAKING SCDS, DEALERS WILL ALSO INSPECT THE ABS CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR AND REPAIR AS NECESSARY. REPAIRS WILL BE COMPLETED FREE OF CHARGE. AT ABOUT 10 YEARS AND 100,000 MILES THE VEHICLE STARTED BLOWING THE #19 5AMP FUSE, DASHBOARD LIGHTS GO OUT BUT THE DANGEROUS CONSEQUENCE IS A LOSS OF POWER, CAN'T CLEAR TRAFFIC IN A LEFT TURN OR GO UP HILL, HAVE TO BACK DOWN. KNOWN PROBLEM ONLINE, SOME PEOPLE JUST REPLACE THE FUSE WITH A 10AMP, THE CAUSE IS A WIRE IN THE STEERING COLUMN WAS THROUGH IT'S INSULATION AND SHORTS. MINE HAPPENED MORE FREQUENTLY ALWAYS AFTER TURNING LEFT. FORD SERVICE IGNORED THE ONLINE INFO AND TOLD ME I NEEDED A NEW $700 FUEL PUMP. THAT DID NOT HELP AND I DEMANDED THEY OPEN THE STEERING COLUMN AND FIX THE WIRE, NO PROBLEMS SINCE, I AM ASSUMING THIS HAS NEVER BEEN REPORTED SINCE I HAD TO GOOGLE FOR THE ANSWER. I WAS LUCKY AN NEVER GOT HIT BY ANY ONCOMING OR FOLLOWING TRAFFIC, PARTICULARLY THRILLING TO BACK DOWN A NARROW STEEP STREET WITH LIMITED VISIBILITY.

THIS WAS MY SECOND EXPERIENCE RECENTLY WITH A BLOW-OUT OF MY BF GOODRICH RUGGED TERRAIN T/A LT275/65R18 TIRES. IN MAY THE LEFT REAR BLEW OUT AT HIGHWAY SPEED WITH THE SIDE WALL SHREDDED SIMILAR TO THE RECENT BLOW OUT. I WAS PRO-RATED FOR THAT TIRE BUT AFTER THIS RECENT EVENT I AM CHANGING OUT ALL THE TIRES AND GOING BACK TO COOPER, I WOULDN'T CHANCE HAVING A MORE SERIOUS LOST-OF-CONTROL EVENT! THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND REPLIED IN A LETTER ADVISING HIM THAT A RECALL NOTICE 09V399000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL) WAS MAILED IN NOVEMBER 2010; HOWEVER, THE CONTACT NEVER RECEIVED THE LETTER. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 135,000.

THE DRIVER PLACED BOTH HANDS ON THE STEERING WHEEL AND MANEUVERED THE WHEEL TO THE RIGHT. THE STEERING WHEEL FAILED TO UNLOCK UNTIL THE RELEASE OF THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO RESUME NORMAL OPERATION. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHENEVER PRESSURE WAS APPLIED TO THE BRAKE SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THE DEFECT WAS A MANUFACTURER DESIGN WITHOUT A REMEDY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 19,000. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE CONTACT NO LONGER OWNED THE VEHICLE.

I WAS DRIVING MY 2001 FORD F350 TO WORK. JUST AS I TURNED OFF THE HIGHWAY MY TRUCK LURCHED AND THE REAR WHEELS BEGAN TO SKID. I PUT MY TRUCK INTO NEUTRAL AND THE REAR WHEELS BEGAN TO ROLL AGAIN. I COASTED TO A STOP ON THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. I TESTED THE BRAKES AND THEY WHERE FINE. I TRIED REVERSE AND FORWARD AND EVERYTHING SEEMED FINE. I WAS CLOSE TO WORK AND THE ROAD SHOULDER WAS VERY NARROW SO I DECIDED TO SEE IF I COULD GET TO WORK. THE TRUCK STARTED OUT FINE. HOWEVER WHEN IT SHIFTED TO 3RD GEAR IT LURCHED AGAIN AND THE REAR WHEELS BEGAN TO SKID. I MANUALLY SHIFTED BACK TO SECOND GEAR AND THE TRUCK RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION FOR THAT GEAR. AFTER TALKING TO A NUMBER OF TRANSMISSION MECHANICS THE CONSENSUS WAS CLEAR. THE 'MECHANICAL DIODE' ON THE DIRECT DRUM WAS SEIZED. THIS PROBLEM IS WELL DOCUMENTED. IT IS COMMON ON 2001 FORDS TRUCKS WITH THE 4R100 TRANSMISSION. THESE ARE THE ONLY FORD TRUCKS WITH THIS 'MECHANICAL DIODE'. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 6 MONTHS OF PRODUCTION FORD SWITCHED BACK TO USING A ROLLER SPRAG JUST AS IT HAD USED IN ALL AUTOMATIC TRUCK TRANSMISSIONS BEFORE AND AFTER. IF THIS CATASTROPHIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE HAD OCCURRED MOMENTS BEFORE OR AT ANY POINT THE NEXT DAY (SNOW RAIN MIX) THE RESULT WOULD HAVE BEEN TOTAL LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE HAD A TRANSMISSION SHOP REMOVE THE DEFECTIVE PART. THEY REPLACED IT WITH THE A REDESIGNED FORD PART THAT REPLACES THE 'MECHANICAL DIODE' WITH A ROLLER SPRAG. *TR

WHILE PICKING UP SPEED ON AN ON RAMP JUST OUTSIDE LAS. VEGAS NV. UNTO THE I-15 MY F350 FORD TRUCKS FRONT END BEGAN A SHIMMY. AS WE WERE APPROACHING HWY. SPEEDS 71 OR 72 MPH. SUDDENLY THE LT. THE OIL PANS ON MOST LATE MODEL FORD 7.3 LITER POWER STROKE DIESELS HAS A SEVERE PROBLEM WITH THE OIL PANS RUSTING THROUGH, CAUSING MASSIVE OIL LEAKS, POSSIBLE FIRE HAZARDS, AND SEVERE ENGINE FAILURE, IF THE PROBLEM IS NOT CAUGHT IN TIME. THE COST TO HAVE THIS REPAIRED IS CLOSE TO TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS, AND THIS PROBLEM IS EXTREMELY WELL DOCUMENTED AMONG OWNERS OF VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THIS ENGINE. FORD HAS DONE NOTHING TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM, NO RECALLS, NO TSB'S, NOTHING. A NEW OEM OIL PAN FROM FORD IS CLOSE TO $400 DOLLARS, AN AFTERMARKET CLOSE TO $100. THE WAY TO RECTIFY THIS PROBLEM IS TO REMOVE THE ENTIRE ENGINE FROM THE VEHICLE, A JOB REQUIRING EXTENSIVE TRAINING AND SKILL, AS WELL AS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT. (IN ORDER TO DO THE JOB PROPERLY, AND SAFELY). WE OWN A 2001 F350 SUPER DUTY POWERSTROKE DIESEL TRUCK. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON AND OFF FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS AND THEN HIS TRUCK WOULD NOT START. IT WOULD CRANK BUT WOULDN'T FIRE. WE HAD IT TOWED TO A LOCAL FORD GARAGE. THEY RAN TESTS AND DETERMINED IT WAS THE FUEL INJECTOR MODULE. THE PART WAS ORDERED ON 8-11-08. TO DATE IT HAS NOT BEEN RECEIVED. THE FORD COMPANY SAID THERE IS AN EXPECTED RELEASE DATE OF THE PART FOR 10-6-08. THEY SAID THERE HAS BEEN SUCH AN ABUNDANCE OF ORDER FOR THAT PARTICULAR PART THAT THE FORD MANUFACTURER CANNOT MAKE THE PART FAST ENOUGH. MY QUESTION IS, IS THIS A DEFECT THAT FORD SHOULD REPLACE. I COULD UNDERSTAND MAYBE A WEEK TO GET A PART BUT IF FORD CANNOT MAKE THE PART FAST ENOUGH TO COVER ALL THAT'S GOING BAD THAT SOUNDS LIKE A PROBLEM. WHILE DRIVING A 2001 FORD F350 PICKUP ON THE US HIGHWAY 50 FREEWAY IN THE SHINGLE SPRINGS, CA, AREA, I HAD A FIRESTONE STEELTEX A/T LT265/75R16 TIRE BLOW-OUT AND TREAD SEPARATION. THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT TIRE AND VEHICLE HAD 31,617 MILES ON IT AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE. I OBTAINED ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE TO HAVE THE FAILED TIRE REMOVED AND THE SPARE TIRE INSTALLED. I REMEMBERED THAT SEVERAL YEARS AGO THAT THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH FIRESTONE TIRES INSTALLED ON FORD VEHICLES. I FOUND THAT RECALL NUMBER 04T003000 WAS ISSUED, WHICH STATED THAT I SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED A NOTIFICATION TO OWNERS THAT BEGAN ON MARCH 5, 2004. I NEVER RECEIVED THE NOTICE TO TAKE MY VEHICLE TO A FORD DEALER FOR THE FREE REPLACEMENT OF THE TIRES AS INDICATED IN THE RECALL NOTICE. I CONTACTED THE FORD DEALER WHERE I BOUGHT THE TRUCK NEW IN 2001 CONCERNING THE TIRE FAILURE AND REPLACEMENT PER THE RECALL NOTICE. THE FORD DEALER STATED THAT THEY WERE NOT AWARE OF THE RECALL NOTIFICATION AND ADVISED ME TO CONTACT FORD MOTOR COMPANY. THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY REPRESENTATIVE REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE RECALL NOTICE THAT WAS ISSUED APPLIED TO THE FIRESTONE STEELTEX A/T TIRES THAT WERE INSTALLED ON MY TRUCK AS ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT. I CONTACTED BRIDGESTONE FIRESTONE WHO ADVISED ME TO SHIP THE FAILED TIRE TO NASHVILLE, TN, AT MY EXPENSE FOR THEIR "EVALUATION", BUT FAILED TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE OF THE SAFETY OF THE REMAINING 3 TIRES AND THE 1 INSTALLED SPARE TIRE THAT ARE STILL INSTALLED ON THE VEHICLE. AS OF THIS DATE I HAVE THE FAILED TIRE AND I HAVE NOT SHIPPED THE FAILED TIRE TO BRIDGESTONE FIRESTONE. DESIGN FLAW FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS HAVE NO PAD RETENTION DEVICE AND THE THICKNESS OF THE BACKING PLATE IS LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO THE DISTANCE FROM THE CALIPER CAGE TO THE ROTOR. THIS, COMBINED WITH THE LACK OF WEAR INDICATOR TABS MEANS THAT THE BRAKES FUNCTION PROPERLY RIGHT UP UNTIL THE FRICTION MATERIAL IS ALMOST GONE AT WHICH TIME THERE IS THE SCRAPING NOISE. AT THIS TIME THE PAD CAN AND HAS ON MY TRUCK, SLID RIGHT OUT OF THE CALIPER AND LANDED ON THE GROUND. THIS LEAVES ONE TRYING TO STOP A ONE TON TRUCK WITH THE BRAKE CUP DIRECTLY ON THE ROTOR.
