I am reporting a serious intermittent safety issue with my 2016 Nissan Murano, which I recently purchased from a private seller. On multiple occasions, the vehicle suddenly stops accelerating after driving for approximately 20–30 minutes, including multiple local stops. When this occurs, the engine continues to run, but the car becomes completely unresponsive to throttle input and cannot be moved, even when placed into gear. This has happened in live traffic situations, posing a clear risk to safety. In each instance, after the car sits for a period of time or is connected to an external battery charger, it eventually restarts and operates normally—until the issue repeats. There are no warning lights or messages on the dashboard, and no diagnostic trouble codes are stored in the system. I brought the vehicle to an authorized Nissan dealership, where it remained for over a month. They reported being unable to reproduce the issue and could not identify any mechanical or electrical faults. The alternator tested fine, and they returned the vehicle to me with no repairs or resolution. Since that time, the issue has occurred again. I believe this may involve: A low-voltage electrical problem, possibly a blown fusible link or intermittent charging system failure A bad ground or wiring fault affecting the ECM, TCM, or fuel pump A voltage-sensitive sensor or relay malfunction that fails under heat or load but does not log a fault A condition causing the CVT transmission to disengage due to insufficient power This issue has rendered the vehicle dangerous and unreliable, especially since it fails with no warning and then unpredictably recovers. I am filing this complaint in hopes that NHTSA will investigate this failure pattern, which appears to be consistent with known Nissan electrical and CVT system complaints in other model years. If this is a known defect, Nissan should be held accountable for providing a resolution, even outside of warranty.

The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Murano. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost motive power and started to coast. The contact had the vehicle towed to the dealer, and the dealer determined there was corrosion on the battery terminals. The battery cables were repaired. The dealer also mentioned potential engine failure. The engine was not repaired. The failure occurred 3 times. The contact stated that after the second failure, the vehicle was towed to the dealer, and the dealer was unable to identify the cause of the failure. The contact inquired about NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V774000 (Engine and Engine Cooling, Hybrid Propulsion System). The dealer confirmed that the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that after the third failure, the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who claimed that the decoration the contact applied around the push-start button was causing a malfunction in communication. The failure persisted. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle with alternator failure, and the alternator was replaced. The contact received a notice about an extended warranty coverage for the Control Variable Timing (CVT) valve. The manufacturer was informed of the failure, and a case was opened. The manufacturer confirmed the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V774000 ( Engine and Engine Cooling, Hybrid Propulsion System) and under the extended warranty coverage. I have been experiencing complete driving failure with my 2016 Nissan Murano. It shutdowns randomly without any warning well driving in traffic. I have already experienced being put in a crash risk three times. I have been trying to work with the dealer for almost 2 months now, only to receive my SUV with the same issue. I am terrified to be forced to put my children in such a high risk automobile as this is supposed to be our reliable transportation. I am highly disappointed and uncomfortable with the dealership stating repeatedly they don’t know what’s wrong with my vehicle as they are no codes to factually state the real issue. In the process I am being told I need to pay for highly priced repair guesses or problems that have been generated in their care trying to figure things out. The vehicle has even stopped on them while driving. After driving off their lot twice only to be stranded and put in a crash risk I am not comfortable with being rushed to pick up this vehicle without total safety concerns being addressed. Nissan has not addressed my concerns about their vehicles having recalls about this same issues, only stating it doesn’t show up for my vin# Well why am I having the same exact problem? The safety risks of the vehicle failing in the mist of traffic with absolutely no warning is a huge life threatening risk and shouldn’t be of the hardship of my family as I immediately had it towed to the dealership to assure safety for all. I purchased what I thought would be a safer longevity vehicle to transport my children. I am really having a difficult time with understanding of my concerns are of top priority. As I do appreciate being given a rental while they try a figure it out. My major concerns are being given the vehicle back at the same exact safety issues or worse. Please your cooperation in assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated

My car smells like something is burning, when I drive it for a distance. I had my oil changed back in December and I took it back to the Dealership and advised of the smell and I was advised that my transmission was leaking. When I purchased my car used in August of 2023, I took it back to the Dealership advising that it seemed like it wasn't shifting properly and was advised that 2 mechanics and the Salesman all drove the car, and nothing was wrong and I just needed to get used to the way a Nissan vehicle transmission shifts and here I am today being advised that I have to pay $1200.00 for the repairs for the inner and outer seals because they are leaking. This actually to me is a safety concern because I smell something burning and I have a small child. I also remember seeing a sticker advising do not sale on the car and because of seeing a report on the news about those stickers being placed on cars I am concerned about that also and that I was sold a car that was possibly not supposed to have been purchased. I have contacted the Consume Affairs from Nissan and got nowhere because once again no one wants to take responsibility and fix the car and at this point I really would just like to get another car and to be compensated for the last 2 years. july 2024 traction warning kept appearing on a daily basis. I have pushed Traction off button which both remain on then when car is off (for about 15min or so) then both disappear. However soon afterwards if I keep driving it will appear again - My fear, twice the Traction warning appeared and without putting on Traction off my Vehicle stalled - it was in a frozen state - couldn't move steering wheel -then slowly began moving at 5mph until Traction off was pushed and slowly began running again - but my car does not drive past 65mph on freeway? These are normal streets I'm driving, no pot holes etc. Finally able to get appt with my local mechanic Klipper Automotive for August 30th.

The Nissan Murano’s were recalled back in 2020 stating their CVT was causing stalling issues mid driving and overheating in extreme weather (heat). I complained to Nissan prior to this recall and was told it was filter issue then a battery issue. Of course if was neither. The recall was completed, however for the past year and half my Nissan Murano Hybrid stalls when the air condition is on during the summer. The car drives fine in the winter and late fall. I have taken my vehicle to 2 Nissan dealerships Owings Mills and Ellicott City wanted to ensure of the issue. Both came back with the same answer, for the Consumer rep Ali suggested getting a second opinion and I informed him I did. The Hybrid CVT is overheating mechanical failure due to a part inside the transmission. Nissan refuses to fix stating I need to pay $11,000 for a new transmission to fix the issue. The service rep John stated no other Murano has ever had this happen and of course they no longer make my year (2016). I have contacted Nissan Consumer line twice and was informed they will not be doing a good will either. The cost is so high was told because they have to build a new one. I believe NIssan knew of this problem and ignored and was hoping the recall would fix the shudder and shut off of the vehicle. Another recall needs to be done on CVT’s for the brand Nissan and should be responsible for fixing this.

Both driver and passenger airbag lights have been on for about a year. This vehicle has never been involved in a car accident. I recently had the service dept at the dealership take a look as my mechanic was unable to troubleshoot the issue. The code the dealer found was B00A0-00, occupant sensor unit, abnormal voltage. The dealer is stating that the occupant sensor unit needs to be replaced as well as both sensors.

After opening my hood to check the engine oil, the main hood latch would not engage, to keep the hood down, the only thing holding the hood is secondary latch. I was over at my uncle's house when this happened and could not take the freeway home fearing that the hood might pop up while driving at a higher speed than on the city streets. When I got home, I got on my computer, and found that NIssan has a recall on other models for defective latches for the same year as my 2016 Nissan Murano. I plan on taking it to the Nissan dealership to get it fixed this weekend.

On multiple occasions the engine has cut off. once a few seconds after starting the engine cut out. another time while waiting in a turn lane to turn left the engine cut out. Another time while driving in the center lane the engine cut off and additional times. It has cut while in Park, it has cut off while in Drive. This is very unsafe especially when driving and there are other drivers. There is no warning it is going to happen. This is my teen's designated vehicle and we have another teen who will be driving this car soon. We took the car back to the dealer just a few days after purchasing to have it checked out. THey kept it for several days but couldn't find any issue. We picked up the the car back but after a few weeks the engine cut out twice and we took it back in. This time, there also happens to be a small oil leak. They said something about replacing the bank2/banking cellunoid and it might be a timing issue.

The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Murano. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle experienced phantom braking. The failure resulted in another vehicle rear-ending his vehicle in a collision. The air bags did not deploy. The contact’s wife did not sustain any injuries and medical attention was not received. No police report was filed. The contact’s wife was able to drive away from the collision site. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the dealer informed the contact that they would reset the error code and clean the camera. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 110,607.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL Dec 16, 2022
Forward Collision Warning lamp in dashboard lights up and cruise control is disabled. This consistently happens at 10.8 miles in the morning when the vehicle is driven for the first time of the day. If you shut the vehicle off then restart the vehicle it only goes a few miles before the Forward Collision Warning lamp lights up again and cruise control is disabled. This happens regardless of whether cruise control is in use, or if cruise control is not in use. The following Service Bulletin describes the issue with my vehicle perfectly and replacing the ICC distance sensor at the end of the flow chart, https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2020/MC-10179568-0001.pdf. I do not understand why Nissan has recognized the defect, issued a service bulletin, and chosen not to issue a recall for this safety related issue.

The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Murano. The contact stated that an antifreeze-like odor could be smelled upon exiting the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transfer case fluid had leaked onto his manifold; he was informed that the vehicle was unsafe to drive and was given an estimate for the repair. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

The driver seat heater is not working.
SEATS Jan 28, 2022
I recently brought my 2016 Nissan Murano to the Nissan service department and asked them to check the driver's side heated seat as it was not working. I was notified by the Nissan service department that the heated seat module had melted and that they needed to disconnect the component because it was a safety concern. It was very concerning to learn that the heated seat component could have possibly caused personal harm to anyone driving my vehicle. I reached out to Nissan in an effort to have them fix the defect and they refused to fix the vehicle free of charge. I have also researched this defect online and there seems to be a pattern of this defect happening in other vehicles of this model and year. I believe that this is a serious safety issue and that Nissan should be investigating the heated seat components on these vehicles and fix the component, so they are safe and in working order.

I am having transmission issues. The car vibrates when I am driving and accelerating between 15-50MPH. I also have water coming in my vehicle and causing mold from the passenger side. I have taken the car to 3 dealers and I have contacted Nissan. There has not been a resolution yet. I had the transfer case repaired twice within less than a month at a Nissan dealer. The vibrating/growling noise is still present. I simply want my car to be fixed

The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Murano. The contact stated that water was leaking into the front driver’s side of the vehicle. Additionally, the engine was making a grinding sound and vibrating while attempting to accelerate. The vehicle also had an oil leak from the transfer case. The contact took the vehicle to a dealer who replaced the transfer case however, the leak recurred approximately a month later. The repair was completed again however, the vehicle was still emitting an abnormal sound. The contact was also informed that the torque converter needed to be repaired. The contact was informed that the torque converter was not damaged enough to be replaced. The contact took the vehicle to a certified mechanic who diagnosed that the transaxle needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 45,000.

I was driving down the road, state highway 78 in Alabama, while going roughly 55 mph, when I heard what sounded like a gunshot or explosion. I stopped to assess the situation, thinking I hit something or a tire exploded. Upon further investigation I discovered that the sunroof had actually exploded. As you can see from the pictures the glass pushed upward and out instead of in and down.

Vehicle randomly quits running while driving. Once stopped, it will typically restart after being put in park and usual parking, stopping, end running operations are performed. There are no warning lights of any kind prior to engine stopping. There are no codes and check engine light has not come on. My daughters safety is of primary concern, as well as other motorists. This happens at speed randomly with no warning. I have searched online and find numerous reports of this on forums and the usual dealer response is it couldn't be replicated. It has occurred between 5-10 times over the past 6-12 months. No accidents yet, but it is not a question of 'if' it is a question of 'when'.

FAILURE OF TRANSFER CASE: WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE ON STREET GOING AT POSTED SPEED LIMIT OF 45 MPH, SUV MADE GRINDING NOISE WHEN COMING TO A STOP LIGHT. UPON START OF ACCELERATION NOISE HEARD AGAIN. AT SPEED LIMIT OF 45 MPH CAR SUDDENLY FELT AS IF WHEELS LOCKED UP AND CAR WOULD NOT MOVE IN DRIVE. SHIFT TO PARK, SHIFTED BACK TO DRIVE AND REVERSE, NO MOVEMENT OF CAR IN GEAR. NEEDED SPECIALIZED DOLLY LIFT TOWING TO DEALERSHIP IN AREA. UPON MULTIPLE INSPECTIONS AND DELIBERATIONS WITH DEALERSHIP MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT AND NISSAN WARRANTY REPRESENTATIVES PART DEEMED RESPONSIBLE WAS THE TRANSFER CASE. THIS WAS SUPPOSEDLY REPAIRED WHEN INCIDENTALLY FOUND AT PRIOR CAR INSPECTION AT USUAL DEALER. REPAIR HAS NOW BEEN DEEMED TO BE COMPLETED WITH USED TRANSFER CASE AS A SAFE OPTIONS. 2015-2019 NISSAN MURANOS HAVE AN ON-GOING ELECTRICAL HAZARD WITH THE CLIMATE CONTROLLED SEATS. THE ELECTRICAL HARNESS CONNECTOR DIRECTLY UNDER THE SEAT WILL FAIL AND ACTUALLY GET SO HOT IT WILL MELT THE PLASTIC PIECES! IN FACT, NISSAN HAS ISSUED IT'S OWN 15 PAGE SERVICE BULLETIN WARNING TO ITS DEALERS ON THE FIRE DANGER (EL18-035, REFERENCE NTB19-004, DATED 17 JANUARY 2019). THIS BULLETIN GRAPHICALLY SHOWS PICTURES OF HOW THE HARNESS CONNECTOR AND THE SEAT CONTROL UNIT WILL GET SO HOT THEY WILL MELT AND FAIL. IT ALSO DETAILS HOW LOCAL DEALERS SHOULD REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE CONNECTOR AND EVEN HOW THEY SHOULD CHARGE NISSAN BACK FOR THE REPAIR (PAGE 15 - PRIMARY PART LINE CLAIM). MY 2016 NISSAN MURANO SUFFERED THE SAME DRIVERS SEAT ELECTRICAL FAILURE RECENTLY. I VISUALLY VERIFIED THE DAMAGED (MELTED) CONNECTOR UNDER THE SEAT AND CONTACTED MY LOCAL NISSAN DEALER (YOUNGBLOOD NISSAN, SPRINGFIELD MO.). I PROVIDED THEM THE NISSAN ALERT INFORMATION. THE DEALER IS REFUSING TO FIX THE KNOWN FAILURE UNLESS THEY ARE PAID FOR THE SERVICE WORK (ESTIMATED IS OVER $300.00)! GIVEN THAT THIS FIRE HAZARD COVERS FOUR YEARS WORTH OF NISSAN MURANO PRODUCTION AND THE 2016-2019 TITANS, NISSAN SHOULD FIX THE DEFECTIVE PARTS FOR FREE. WHILE IN MY CASE THERE WAS NO ACTUAL FIRE OR DAMAGE BEYOND THE MELTED ELECTRICAL PARTS AND LOSS OF THE SEAT CLIMATE CONTROL FEATURE..I HAVE LEFT THE DEFECTIVE PLUG DISCONNECTED, STILL LEAVES ME VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THEY SAFETY OF MYSELF AND MY FAMILY. I HAVE ATTACHED IMAGES OF BOTH THE INTERNAL NISSAN SERVICE BULLETIN AND AN IMAGE OF MY MELTED AND DEFECTIVE ELECTRICAL PLUG. THANK YOU.
