I own a 2014 Honda CR-V. Since around November 2022 I have repeatedly experienced an intermittent “bounce” or shudder when accelerating, especially around 20–25 mph and sometimes at higher speeds (around 45 mph and above). The vehicle feels like it briefly loses power or slips before catching again, and the check-engine light has come on and off during this period. I took the vehicle to Stockton Honda (CA) multiple times and consistently reported this bounce/shudder on take-off. Each time, the focus was on brakes, rotors, tires, or other maintenance items. I was never told there might be an engine or timing-chain issue or that the vehicle could be unsafe to drive. The bounce/shudder never went away. I have also been involved in multiple low-speed collisions while taking off from a stop in the past few years, and I am concerned that this hesitation/loss of power may have contributed. In late 2025, Honda of Elk Grove performed a full diagnostic, retrieved a P031 code, and told me the most likely cause is a timing-chain problem. I was advised that the vehicle is not recommended to be driven until the timing chain is replaced because the engine could be severely damaged or fail while driving. The technician refused to take the car on the freeway due to safety concerns. I am submitting this complaint so NHTSA is aware that a possible timing-chain defect or failure in 2014 Honda CR-V vehicles can present as a bounce/shudder at low speeds during acceleration, with potential loss of power and increased risk of rear-end collisions, and that this condition may be missed or misdiagnosed by dealers for an extended period.

Honda CRV was purchased in New York in 2014 and has been registered in Texas since 2023. The car has approximately 76600 miles (substantially lower than 132,000 miles average mileage). According to Team Gillman Honda Dealership. The car has undergone severe rusting leading to coolant leak. I was asked to replace the radiator, hoses, welding of convertor and exhaust pipes. The bill exceeds 5000 USD/- (according to the dealer). Rooster car care has quoted a 6000 USD/- for similar fixes. So far, I have already spent 550 USD/- and the repairs have failed Honda did issue a recall for 564,000 Honda CRV's made between 2007-2011 driven in salt belt states. This information is publicly available.

The contact owned a 2014 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 MPH on a two-lane road, the contact pressed the brake pedal to avoid rear-ending the vehicle in front. The contact indicated that when pressing the brake pedal, the driver's air bag erroneously deployed, causing the driver to lose control of the steering and crash into a guardrail, where the vehicle came to a stop. The vehicle in front was not crashed into and left the scene after witnessing the crash into the guardrail. The contact sustained severe facial and oral injuries along with a concussion, chest and arm bruising, which required medical treatment. A police report was filed at the scene. The vehicle was destroyed and towed away. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The dealer was not contacted. The contact was also concerned that metal fragments may have exploded from the air bag deployment. No additional information was available. The failure mileage was 70,000.

This morning, I went to get into my 2014 Honda CR-V. As I shut the driver’s side door, the entire rear hatchback window suddenly shattered. There was no impact, accident, or attempted theft. The vehicle was parked and stationary at the time. I’m unsure why this happened, but it appears to have occurred spontaneously and without any external force.

My 2014 CRV has 83,131 miles and I am a careful driver and like to keep my vehicle in top shape. The service done was replaced outer tie rod ends that were cracked and I could have lost control , replaced front lower control arms, replaced front struts, replaced rear sway bar bushings, reseal coolant passage housing , head gaskets, my vehicle could have quit in traffic. The top of my CRV has paint faded and gone to a white powder look. There are things that a car with low miles driven carefully and taken very good car of should not be happening. There should be recalls because there are issues with timing chains and fuel system. I am scared to drive it anymore. I won't stay loyal to Honda now and I am very disappointed that they know these issues and haven't attempted to fix them.

I was driving with my family home and my vehicle began to move from side to side in a very violent manner. When I stopped and checked my vehicle I saw that the frame where the rear suspension arm is held was completely rusted and broken, the rear tire was about to completely detach from the vehicle and luckily I was able to stop without harming the health of my son and wife, after the incident I investigated and realized that it is a fairly common problem in multiple Honda CRV models of various years and so far no mechanic shop has wanted to repair my vehicle because they say that it is a major and very expensive repair, No warning lights came on before this happened and no one has wanted to inspect the vehicle, neither the dealer nor the insurance company, as they say this is not their problem but mine.

The contact owns a 2014 Honda CR-V. The contact stated while driving approximately 2 MPH and pulling out of a parking lot, the contact felt a bump underneath the vehicle. While inspecting around the vehicle, the contact became aware that the trailing arm had detached from the vehicle. The failure caused the tires to turn inward, causing damages underneath the vehicle. The contact stated that excessive rust and failure caused excessive damages underneath the vehicle, causing other parts of the body to start to detach. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact became aware of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V228000 (Structure); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and opened a case. The failure mileage was approximately 183,000.

The contact owns a 2014 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, there was an abnormal rattling sound coming from the engine compartment. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the VTC actuator, resulting in damages to the engine. The contact was informed that a partial rebuild of the engine was required. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to Technical Service Bulletin: 16-012. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 58,000.

DRIVERS SEAT BELT DOES NOT RECOIL, FRAYED WHERE USED DEALER WILL NOT REAIR UNDER WARRENTY

While parking at friend house behind her car partially on sidewalk, had to go fwd and reverse to park correctly. When switching to drive as car was on very slight decline (rear end higher) got sudden engine acceleration. Put in Neutral , saw RPM climb to about 3000 rpm and then several seconds later dropped to normal. All past unintended accelerations have been with front end on decline (lower than rear). Happens randomly maybe every few months. Have filed prior reports. Am on alert with hand on gear shift when slowing to a stop now.

There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact's son test-drove the vehicle and experienced the same failure. The contact attempted to depress the accelerator pedal and believed that there was no gasket on the fuel pump. The vehicle was taken to a dealer however, the dealer could not recreate the failure with the accelerator. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

On December 23, 2024, I purchased a 2014 Honda CRV. A few days later I noticed that the heating system was not working properly. I called the dealership and told them about the problem. They gave me an appointment with the service department to have the heating system looked at. The diagnosis was that it had a bad heater core. The service attendant told me that it was a common problem with the 2014 Honda CRVs and also Honda sent out service bulletin (Service bulletin #14063)about the problem. I stated it had only 49,000 miles on this vehicle. How can this be with Honda building reliable cars. They advised me that all it needed was a flushing of the heater core and that it was going to be at my expense and that there would be no absolute guarantee that it would solve the problem. If it did not work, the next step would be to replace the heater core, again at my expense ($1400.00) The flushing did not work at which the heater core was replaced. I don’t understand why this problem was not addressed by the Honda Company. If Honda doesn’t do a recall, at least stand by the Honda name and reimburse the owner for the defective part. Again, 49,000 miles.

The tailgate door doesn’t open normally sometime I have to push the button more than 10 times then it open but most of the time it doesn’t open.I use this car as a spare or for emergency only so I just wait for Honda to recall, hopefully I don’t want to spend a lot of money to fix because the warranty has expired (41 months but only 25000 miles)but now I use this car every day

My tailgate does not open in cold weather. It was been serviced by Honda several times. They said they fixed it and it still does not work so I cannot use my trunk at all in the winter. I have a disability and need to use my trunk for groceries and medical equipment. Now Honda says it is out of warranty and wants to charge me for something they never actually fixed (Garden State Honda). Please recall and permanently fix this, many people have the same issue.

Sudden Unintended Acceleration Vehicle has approx 60,700 miles and never a mechanical issue, been extremely reliable. Today [XXX] went shopping in Burlington ,MA (from Watertown, MA) no issues from 7:15AM departure to about 9:05 AM at friend house (XXX).. While parking on part of sidewalk, went into reverse. Then switched to "drive" to position vehicle and suddenly had obvious event of sudden unintended acceleration. Put in neutral and hit brake, as I am always on alert for issue based on past events. . Happened one more time a minute later and foot was not on accelerator but on brake as I switched between reverse and Drive. Made a point with wife in passenger seat to assure not on accelerator. Last time issue occurred was on [XXX] and recorded event even to Honda. On 6/13/24 someone called "Walter" called from Honda regarding my recording issues with Honda (5 incidences). As we were going on vacation I told him that he should call me back after 7/17/24 and he said OK, no problem. I never got a call back. Left vehicle with son-in-law who is master mechanic and he checked it while I was away. Cleaned Throttle body and other parts. Seemed to correct it and no problem at all until [XXX]. Am always prepared for a rare repeat event when coming to a stop or at a stop, hand on transmission shift and foot on brake. Problem is that it occurs rarely and no way a dealer or maybe even a Honda rep will pin down the cause as it's not repeatable. Will have son-in-law recheck it before wasting time with dealer or Honda again , neither of who will never find a cause or repeat it while they hold my vehicle. . The contact owns a 2014 Honda CR-V. The contact stated when the vehicle was started, there was a loud rattling sound coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The vehicle was scheduled for an upcoming diagnostic test. The contact stated that the failure had been occurring intermittently since 2014, however in 2020 the failure occurred, and the variable timing actuator (VTC)was replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 52,032.

Engine code p1009 VTC valve replacement no know place will replace due to zero tolerant engine and timing not in tune due too much damage by the pistons and valves

Passenger seat has several spots where it has burned through. Unable to heat seat because of this.

Rattles and shakes between 25 and 40 mph, bad actuator will cause timing failure. It only has 71,000 miles. Honda is well aware of this defect in this vehicle. When will they be held accountable to fix this issue? At 33k I was definitely taken for a ride! No engine warning light either!

Hi, I am [XXX] - owning Honda CRV 2014 model - the vehicle was purchased in Buffalo NY and used in Buffalo from 2014 till 2022 September. Currently I live in Georgia state and when I went for service at local dealer, they shown me most of the places under the vehicle was rusted and not sure how much time it will run. I know Honda has recalled many Honda crvs which ran on coldest places but I am not able to find a recall for this 2014 year to fix that rust problem. Could you please help with get that fixed. The contact owns a 2014 Honda CR-V. The contact stated while driving at slow speeds, the contact became aware that the vehicle was vibrating abnormally. The contact stated the failure had become more frequent over the past several months. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or a local dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed the VIN was not under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.

Purchased our 2014 CR-V [XXX], used one owner, 55301 mileage. Very little driving the next three years due to the pandemic. Summer of 2023 we were driving from Buffalo to [XXX] , first 30 miles, severe hesitation, amber lights on, until reaching 70mph. Hesitation stopped but lights stayed on. By August the TPMS indicator, malfunction indicator lamp and other lights came on, again. We reset according to the manual, but this was just the beginning of this process happening over and over again. During dealer testing Code PO 341 came up. Had it tested at another place before taking it to West Herr Honda and was told needed Timing chain replacement with VTC. This was done at a cost of $2232.06 with car mileage of 63159. We were sad and disappointed. Research shows that Honda is very much aware of over 500 plus recorded problems with the 2014 CR-V not to mention unreported problems. The model should be recalled before lives are lost. Car still hesitates but evidently due to a different problem. For 5th time since about July 2023, my HONDA CR-V 2014 vehicle experienced Sudden unexpeced acceleration" It has about 57,400 miles. It has occurred very sporadically only since about July 2023. Today as I was parking and going extremely slow in lot, I was about to stop though just creeping very slow, pushed on brake and felt a sudden surge forward. I placed transmission in neutral as I was feet away from parked car ahead of me, and engine rived up to about 2500 RPM for maybe 6-8 seconds and then back to normal idle speed of about 1100RPM. As in prior occasions, it has not recurred again but surely will in the furred. I know that nobody has really found a cause to the issue but called dealer (Honda City, Newton, MA) and spoke to service rep. He claimed he had no clue what I was talking about and merely said it has been since 2020 (37,000 miles) since you replaced transmission fluid, as it that has any bearing since suggested change is after 30k-50k miles and already clanged twice. I sent an email to Honda (Case # [XXX]) and waiting to hear back. Obviously the dealer is playing dumb and just wants to do irrelevant unnecessary service or look at error codes (there have been none) at big cost with no results as in other cases. The paint is suddenly peeling off the car in large pieces. This is occurring above the rear window. The paint is white and I've found numerous complaints of others experiencing the same issue with the Honda white paint. Honda states they will not cover this as it is no longer under warranty and there are no active recalls on this vehicle. When I asked if this was covered for the 2013 Honda CRV they would not answer but suggested I could 'submit a claim to the NHTSA to have my vehicle added'. This is the first Honda I've ever owned and have never seen this happen. Honda needs to be held responsible for this repair. No car that is garage kept should have the paint peeling off it. Please advise next steps.

There is a known issue with 2014 Honda CRV torque converters. My car has always had a funky shift which Honda told me it was just the new CVT transmission. Then back in August my mother drive my car and said that was not correct. I took it to Honda and they said it was the torque converter. It is causing my vehicle to become undrivable with out feeling safe. It judders, shakes and doesn't shift properly. I contacted Honda and they acknowledge that it is a known issue with their CVT transmission. They currently have 1200 orders for torque converters on back order that shows you how much of an issue that this is.

A VTC actuator rattles and is damaging the timing chain that will fail and cause catastrophic engine failure on road that can cause life threatening event

On 2/21/24 as we were exiting a Hospital Parking Garage and I slowed down to stop at exit where road is, the engine suddenly had an uncontrolled acceleration. Difficult to stop but I pressed hard on brakes (which alone did not stop vehicle)and immediately put gearbox in Neutral, stopping vehicle before it made it on the street. After that, no more incidents on 2/21 or 2/22.. Should be noted I had total of 3 such incidents in past 4-5 months, this was the third. One occurred as getting out a store parking lot, slowing down at street interface and suddenly engine acceleration, used same technique as above. Another was at end of our street coming to a stop at interface to another street, same occurrence. In each of the occurrences I can verify that it was neither a car mat issue (it is anchored in car) not an accidental stepping o accelerator. . Have not contacted dealer or Honda as I note neither has ever found an answer to similar occurrences with others. For now drive carefully and one hand on shift lever most of the time when coming to a stop as occurrences appear to be far apart.

My vehicle was involved in an accident on the highway in which no front airbags were deployed. I’m grateful that my family and I weren’t seriously injured. My Vin# shows that their aren’t any recalls on my vehicle but feel there may be something wrong with my airbags.

VTC failed July 2018. Honda stated I must pay for the repair costing $662. According to Honda receipt the R5A new VTC was installed. Now it's January 2024 and car VTC failing again. Note: When I changed the valve cover gasket I looked at the VTC and noticed that it says R44. Basically they lied about the repair and put another of the defective VTC. Obviously a much more expensive repair this time due to Honda negligence and dishonesty.

For over a year now, my Honda CRV 2014 has been producing a rattling noise from the engine on every cold startup. This happens regardless of the temperature outside. When I initially heard it, it was sporadic, again, on cold startup - so the rattling didn't occur every time. Over time though, it will occur every morning, or after the car has been sittinwith the engine off for at least a few hours. I asked a mechanic to look at it after a few months after I had first heard it, because it continued to happen, even periodically. As it only happened on cold startup, I could not reproduce it for the mechanic - he could not find any obvious issue. After a few more months, I recorded the issue on video (and audio). The same mechanic said it may be the VTC actuator. I had another mechanic look at the same video, and he said it was almost certainly the VTC actuator. He said Honda had recalled the vehicle because of the VTC actuator issue and sent me a link to a webpage with the information. It turns out it was only a technical bulletin rather than a recall. I called a Honda dealership and provided them information about the issue. They asked for my VIN and told me there was no recall after searching my VIN. After some discussion with them, wherein I referenced the technical bulletin and inquired if Honda would provide a replacement for the known issue, the representative said since it wasn't recalled, they could only diagnose and repair at full cost. After I continued to press the issue, she asked if I wanted the telephone number for Honda corporate, so I could send them my complaint. I have no yet taken my car in for repair, as the cost will be very expensive. I don't understand why Honda has not recalled the vehicles over this issue, given the fact that it is an issue they have admitted to, and it apparently is a potentially dangerous and life-threatening issue.

Known Honda issue- tsb a15-086 Software update and trans fluid change in 2018 due to car juddering with light acceleration, did not fix problem. 10/20/23 car was road tested and concern was present. Needs new torque converter to fix original concern

Noticed one day that passenger seat had burn marks. Have smelt on occasion what seemed to be burning smells in the past. Don’t use the seat heater there since that was noticed. This is a danger.

I was in a major car accident. My Honda CR-V air bags did not deploy. Due to the accident I have a neck and back injury. My insurance company has declared my vehicle a total loss. Millions of Americans are driving Honda CR-Vs and due to air bag failure their lives are at risk in the case of a collision. I have called Honda and asked them to investigate the failure of their air bags deployment. They have refused to do so. I am requesting the NHTSA investigate Honda CR-Vs air bag malfunction and help to save many Americans lives.
