STRUCTURE:BODY:HATCHBACK/LIFTGATE:HINGE AND ATTACHMENTS
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MINI VANS. THE BOLTS USED TO ATTACH THE STRUT TO THE BODY AND THE REAR LIFTGATE CAN ACCUMULATE FATIGUE DAMAGE IF THREE FACTORS COMBINE. IF THE BOLT IS LOOSE, THE GAS STRUT IS OVER-PRESSURIZED, AND THE FREQUENCY OF OPENING AND CLOSING CYCLES IS HIGHER THAN FOR THE AVERAGE CUSTOMER, THE BOLT CAN FAIL.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT FOR LOOSE FASTENERS, IF THE FASTENERS ARE LOOSE, THE STRUT (AND INTEGRAL BOLTS) WILL BE REPLACED. IF THE BOLT SHOWS EVIDENCE OF TORQUE, THE BOLT WILL BE REMOVED, LARGER WASHERS WILL REPLACE THE EXISTING WASHER AND THE BOLT WILL BE REINSTALLED AND HAND TIGHTENED TO THE TARGET TORQUED.

I WAS HEADING HOME FROM WORK, WHEN I FELT MY MINIVAN START TO LURCH AND SLOW DOWN AT THE SAME TIME. I BARELY MADE IT HOME. I HAD IT LOOKED AT THE NEXT DAY AND THE REPAIR SHOP SAID THE CLUTCH PLATES WERE FROZEN TOGETHER AND I WAS LUCKY THAT THE TRANSMISSION DIDN'T EXPLODE OR FREEZE-UP(CAUSUNG ACCIDENTS) LIKE SOME OTHERS THAT THEY HAVE SEEN. I LOOKED INTO THIS AND THERE ARE MORE THAN A FEW HORROR STORIES ON THE INTERNET CONCERNING PLYMOUTH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS EXPLODING, SOME WITH LESS THAN 300 MILES. THIS SEEMS LIKE AN EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS CONDITION, ESPECIALLY CONCERNING MINIVANS WHICH ARE MOSTLY A FAMILY VEHICLE.
