The contact's wife owns a 1998 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated while his wife was taking items out of the trunk of the vehicle, the trunk lid closed abruptly. The contact later noticed that the trunk lid driver’s side hinge was fractured. The contact's wife did not sustain any injuries. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the trunk lid hinges needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 106,000.
My auto mechanic and I, after extensive diagnosis, have confirmed that the Pulse mileage/route tracking device that Metromile car insurance had me plug into the computer port of my 1998 Toyota Corolla LE is failing or has failed, and this caused a potentially disastrous situation to develop w/my car engine. When starting the engine from cold, it would cause repeated misfires, causing the rpms to drop quickly, then surge up, before settling into the proper cold idle speed. This would repeat itself every few seconds until the engine warmed up completely (usually about 10 minutes). When in gear, the car would buck violently, putting repeated, extreme stress on the drive train; but even when in neutral gear, two mechanics have told me it could easily destroy my crankshaft bearings and/or other parts of the drive train. We have now tested this five times briefly in neutral gear. When we plug the pulse device in the problem occurs immediately. When we remove the device the problem goes away. We can also insert the mechanic's diagnostic device into the computer port and everything works fine. The new "Pulse" device was received as a replacement for the old one I had been using, that had worked fine, and was first inserted into the computer port on 8/9/21. So it worked fine for about a month. Supposedly the only difference between the old and new devices is that the new one uses 5G instead of 4G to receive and transmit data.

THIS COMPLAINT IS ABOUT A GPS DEVICE THAT ATTACHES TO THE CAR THROUGH THE OBDII PORT. MANUFACTURERED BY AGNIK CORPORATION SOLD UNDER THE BRAND NAME VYNCS. THE DEVICE, WHEN INSTALLED, HAS CAUSED INTERMITTENT STALLING OF THE VEHICLE AT LOW SPEED SUCH APPROACHING A STOP OR IDLING IN GEAR AT A STOP. THIS WAS REALIZED TO BE CAUSED BY THE DEVICE AFTER ABOUT 1 WEEK OF EXPERIENCING INTERMITTENT STALLING. WHEN THE DEVICE WAS REMOVED FROM THE CAR, THE STALLING ISSUE DISSAPEARED. MY WIFE'S 1998 TOYOTA COROLLA WAS HIT HEAD ON AT 70MPH BY A FULL SIZE PASSENGER TRUCK AND THE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. SHE HAS BEEN THE SOLE OWNER OF THE VEHICLE SINCE PURCHASE. PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT, IN THE COURSE OF OWNERSHIP, THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT CAME ON PERIODICALLY. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE IN SEVERAL OCCASIONS TO TWO DIFFERENT AUTHORIZED TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS AND BOTH REPORTED THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG. THIS, IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT THE LIGHT CONTINUED TO FLASH INTERMITTENTLY. WE HAVE RETAINED THE DIAGNOSTIC RECEIPTS FROM THE DEALERSHIPS. I CONTACTED TOYOTA MOTORS, AND THEY HAVE CREATED A CASE NUMBER. TOYOTA MOTORS REQUESTED CRASH PHOTOGRAPHS TO BE E-MAILED TO THEM, WHICH I HAVE DONE. CONSUMER STATES SEAT BELT DEFECTIVE. *TGW SEVERAL YEARS AGO, THE SEAT BELT BEGAN FRAYING AS A RESULT OF BEING SCRAPED BY THE SEAT BELT BUCKLE MECHANISM AS IT SLID THROUGH THE SLOT. THE SEAT BELT HAS LOST ABOUT ONE-THIRD OF ITS WIDTH. THE DEFECT APPEARS TO BE THE SLOT IN THE SEAT BELT MECHANISM. SO, MERELY REPLACING THE SEAT BELT WOULDN'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM. *JB
WHILE DRIVING HER 1998 TOYOTA COROLLA WITH APPROXIMATELY 75,000 MILES ON IT, MY MOTHER EXPERIENCED STEERING PROBLEMS WITH HER CAR AND BEFORE SHE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO STOP THE VEHICLE IT DROVE OFF THE ROAD AND HIT A TREE. SHE SAID THE CAR JERKED QUICKLY TO THE RIGHT THEN LEFT THEN RIGHT AGAIN BEFORE IT HIT THE TREE AND IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE FOR HER TO CONTROL IT. UNCONTROLLABLE ACCELERATION IN A 1998 TOYOTA COROLLA. MERGING ONTO 35W S AT COUNTY C. ACCELERATED FOR MERGE. TOOK FOOT OFF ACCELERATOR AFTER MERGING. CAR KEPT ACCELERATING. PRESSED ON BRAKE AND PUT ON HAND BRAKE. THIS ONLY SLOWED ACCELERATION. I GOT OVER TO THE FAST LANE. CAR WAS DOING MORE THAN 70 MPH AT THIS STAGE. I DECIDED TO TAKE FOOT OFF BRAKE, RELEASE HAND-BRAKE AND PRESS DOWN ACCELERATOR PEDDLE. THIS INCREASED ACCELERATION, BUT ON TAKING FOOT OFF ACCELERATOR, THE CAR SLOWED. AT THIS STAGE I HAD MISSED MY EXIT FOR HIGHWAY 280. I WAS VERY FORTUNATE THAT THE HIGHWAY WAS NOT BUSY AT THE TIME. DATE IS VERY APPROXIMATE. INCIDENT OCCURRED DURING WINTER OF 2001 OR WINTER OF 2002 OR WINTER OF 2003. I STILL DRIVE THE SAME CAR AND HAVE NOT HAD ANY INCIDENT SIMILAR SINCE. IN LIGHT OF THE RECENT TOYOTA RECALLS REGARDING STICKING GAS PEDALS, I FELT I SHOULD REPORT THAT THIS HAPPENED TO ME WITH MY 1998 TOYOTA COROLLA ABOUT FOUR YEARS AGO. THE PEDAL STUCK THREE DIFFERENT TIMES AND I DISCOVERED THAT BRAKING DID NOTHING. HOWEVER, I WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO RELEASE ALL THREE TIMES BY PUMPING THE GAS PEDAL REPEATEDLY! HEADLAMPS ON 1998 TOYOTA COROLLA HAVE FOGGED COMPLETELY OVER. THE FOGGING IS ON THE EXTERNAL LENS SURFACE, NOT DUE TO MOISTURE ON THE INSIDE OF THE HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY. ATTEMPTS TO CLEAN THE SURFACE AR TEMPORARY, WITH THE FOGGING RETURNING AFTER A FEW DAYS. THE FOGGED LENSES ARE A HAZARD AS THE LIGHT IS GREATLY DIMINISHED OVER A CLEAR LENS. *TR
TWO YEARS AGO I REPLACED ALL THE TIRES ON MY 1998 TOYOTA COROLLA WITH A SET OF NEW KUMHO TOURING A/S 795 (175/65SR14). THE TIRES ARE NOW ABOUT 15,000 MILES OLD. THE WARRANTY STATES THEY SHOULD LAST 70,000. ON 01/05/2009 I GOT THE FIRST FLAT TIRE. IT HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED BY AUTO SERVICE AS CAUSED BY A "BAD VALVE STEM". ON 07/03/2009 I GOT A SECOND FLAT TIRE. BFGOODRICH 175/65/R14 TIRES PURCHASED AT SEARS WITHOUT "ROAD HAZARD" ON 4/22/2007. TIRES CLAIM TO HAVE A 60,000 MILE MANUFACTURE WARRANTY. TIRES HAVE BLOWN OUT ON THE HIGHWAY ON 3 SEPARATE INCIDENTS. THE FIRST TIME, SERVICE TECH'S WERE NOT ABLE TO DETERMINE CAUSE- NO ROAD HAZARDS. PURCHASED ANOTHER BRAND TIRE. SECOND INCIDENT AGAIN ON THE HIGHWAY. CAR WAS TAKEN IN AND SERVICE TECH'S AGAIN COULD NOT DETERMINE CAUSE. MANAGER AT SEARS SOLD ME ANOTHER TIRE (SAME MODEL) AT HALF OFF. THIRD INCIDENT OCCURRED ON THE HIGHWAY AGAIN. WHEN EVER I PUT MY CRUISE CONTROL ON, THE CAR WILL STAY AT THE SPEED THAT I SET IT AT FOR JUST A SHORT WHILE. THE POWERTRAIN AND PURCHASE DATE WERE UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 146,000.

I OWN A 1998 TOYOTA COROLLA. IN AUGUST 2004, THE AIRBAG WENT DEFECTIVE. AN AUTHORIZED TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN NJ ORDERED A REPLACEMENT CENTRAL AIRBAG ASSEMBLY AND THE AIRBAG WAS REPLACED ON SEP 1, 2004. *AK HOWEVER AFTER A FEW MONTHS, THE SAME AIRBAG PROBLEM REOCCURED AND I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. AFTER MANY ATTEMPTS TO IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM, THE DEALERSHIP FINALLY CONCLUDED THAT THE ENTIRE AIRBAG CIRCUITRY WAS DEFECTIVE. SINCE THEY QUOTED ME AN EXHORBITANT PRICE, I TOOK THE CAR TO ANOTHER AUTHORIZED TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. THIS SECOND DEALERSHIP AFTER A FEW ATTEMPTS, IDENTIFIED THAT THE SAME CENTRAL AIRBAG ASSEMBLY THAT WAS REPLACED IN SEP 1, 2004 WAS DEFECTIVE. THEY ORDERED A SECOND REPLACEMENT AND FITTED MY CAR WITH THE NEW PART. THIS HAPPENED IN NOV 2006. HOWEVER 2 MONTHS AFTER THE AIRBAG REPLACEMENT,IN FEB 2007 THE SAME AIRBAG PROBLEM REOCCURED FOR A 3RD TIME. I CONTACTED TOYOTA MOTOR SALES USA, INC AT 1901 SOUTH WESTERN AVENUE - WC 10, TORRANCE, CA 90501 TO EXPLAIN THE PROBLEM WITH MY CAR. I SENT THEM ALL THE SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION. HOWEVER INSPITE OF EXPLAINING THE THREAT TO MY LIFE CAUSED BY THE DEFECTIVE AIRBAG, TOYOTA HAS NOT COME FORWARD TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM. I HAVE SPENT CLOSE TO $1500 ON THE PROBLEM ALREADY OVER THE COURSE OF 3 YEARS. EVEN THOUGH THE CAR IS A 1998 MAKE, THE AIRBAGS WERE REPLACED IN SEP 2004 AND NOV 2006 AND ARE STILL UNDER WARRANTY. ON 11/7/2006 I WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT WHERE MY VEHICLE 98 TOYOTA COROLLA REAR ENDED A CEMENT TRUCK. THE SPEED AT WHICH MY CAR WAS TRAVELING WAS 25-35 MPH.
