STEERING:RACK AND PINION:PINION SHAFT
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2005-2011 Ford Crown Victoria, 2005-2011 Mercury Grand Marquis vehicles manufactured March 23, 2004, to August 30, 2011, and 2005-2011 Lincoln Town Car vehicles manufactured March 8, 2004, to August 30, 2011, and on which the upper intermediate shaft was serviced during the course of safety recall 13V-385. The prior repairs may not have been correctly performed.
Remedy: Ford will notify the owners of vehicles whose repair records reflect that the upper intermediate steering shaft was repaired during the course of the prior recall 13V-385. Dealers will inspect and replace the upper immediate shaft if necessary free of charge. The recall began November 17, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 14S25.

STEERING
Ford is recalling certain model year 2005-2011 Ford Crown Victoria (including Crown Victoria Police Interceptors), Mercury Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Town Car vehicles. The affected vehicles are currently registered or were originally sold in Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Severe corrosion can seize the lower intermediate shaft which may cause the upper intermediate shaft to collapse and the steering column lower bearing to separate.
Remedy: Ford will notify owners and dealers will replace the lower intermediate shaft, free of charge. The upper intermediate shaft and steering column lower bearing will be inspected to identify any damage that may have occurred as a result of lower intermediate shaft corrosion, and repaired or replaced as necessary. If the steering column lower bearing has separated, a retainer clip will be installed. The recall began on October 23, 2013. Owners may contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's recall number is 13S08.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT BOTH FRONT WHEEL BEARING AND HUB ASSEMBLIES AND REPLACE THEM FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 22, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.

The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 MPH, the driver pressed the accelerator pedal the vehicle experienced unintended acceleration, causing the vehicle's speed to suddenly increase above 65 MPH. The driver shifted the transmission to the neutral position, but the vehicle continued to increase speed. The driver then pressed the brake pedal, causing the vehicle to spin multiple times before crashing into a ditch. During the incident, no injuries were reported. A police report was taken at the scene, and the vehicle was towed away. The cause of the failure was not determined. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the steering shaft. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V704000 (Steering), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 136,000.
This safety issue was discovered yesterday. The passenger-side rear door will not unlock, either by manual attempt to raise the knob or by using the control buttons on the FOB nor at the driver's station. The window in that door also no longer responds to attempts to raise or lower it. Both my rear seat passengers had to enter using the driver's-side rear door. This creates a serious potential safety hazard by preventing rear-seat passengers exiting the vehicle near their closest door in an emergency. The car will be taken to a local dealership to resolve this safety and convenience issue upon my return from an extended trip. I had no warning of any impending component failure. That door lock and window worked well days ago.

The contact stated that while her mother-in-law was driving in a parking lot, the power steering assist failed to operate as needed without warning. Upon restarting the vehicle, the power steering started to operate as needed; however, the failure soon returned. Despite the failure, her mother-in-law managed to drive the vehicle home. The dealer was notified of the failure and found no record of any recalls on the vehicle. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and linked the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V704000 (Steering). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.
When applying the brake to slow down on an exit ramp, the car unexpectedly accelerated despite the brake pedal being pressed hard. The driver was able to avoid a collision with a stopped vehicle in front by shifting the gear into neutral. The engine revved up for a couple a seconds, but returned to a normal rate of revolution with the gear still in neutral and the car practically stopped.
My 07 Lincoln only has around 80,000 miles on it and has water leaks causing water to pool in the floor boards thereby causing the potential for rust, electrical issues and the hazards that could result therefrom. A quick online search will reveal to you that these leaks are incredibly common and very well known among Lincoln owners and dealers alike (very, very common problem due to manufacturer defects) but Ford refuses to do anything about it. Given how widespread this problem is it seems that the right thing to do would be for Ford to issue a recall and repair these things. Problem appears to affect 99'-11 models. Thank You

I LOST CONTROL OF THE STEERING IN MY TOWNCAR A FEW WEEKS AGO AND HAD IT TOWED TO A DEALER IN NEW CASTLE DELAWARE. THE SERVICE WRITER OFFERED NO EXPLANATION OTHER THAN THE STEERING COLUMN SHAFT HAD BROKEN. AFTER A PERSONAL CLOSER INSPECTION I DETERMINED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN SHAFT WAS PULLED APART AS A RESULT EXCESSIVE TRAVEL OF THE LOWER INTERMEDIATE SHAFT. THE REASONING OFFERED BY FORD BLAMES ONLY THE ISSUE OF CORROSION THUS MINIMIZING THE PARTS FOR POSSIBLE REPLACEMENT. FORTUNATELY, WHEN I EXPERIENCED THE LOSS OF STEERING IN MY CAR I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE AT LOW SPEED. HAD I BEEN OUT ON THE HIGHWAY THE RESULTS COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 LINCOLN TOWN CAR. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME VERY STIFF AND MADE IT DIFFICULT TO STEER THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE STEERING SHAFT WAS REPLACED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. IT WAS UNKNOWN WHO PERFORMED THE REPAIRS ON THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 286,000.
MY CAR HAD 94,106 MILES THEN THE REPAIR WAS MADE. THE FRONT END WAS HANDLING POORLY AND I KNEW THE COIL OVER STRUT ASSEMBLY WOULD NEED REPLACING. WHEN MY MECHANIC PERFORMED THE WORK THEY CALLED AND ASKED ME IF I TRIED TO WORK ON THE FRONT SUSPENSION OF MY CAR AND I TOLD THEM 'NO', AS I HAVE NO TOOLS OR EXPERIENCE TO DO SUCH WORK. I ASKED WHY THEY WANTED TO KNOW AND THE MECHANIC INFORMED THAT MY UPPER BALL JOINTS WERE FRACTURED AND CROSS THREADED. I WANTED TO KNOW HOW IT COULD HAPPEN AND THEY COULD NOT GIVE ME ANSWER (THEY SPECULATE THIS WAS A FACTORY ASSEMBLY MISTAKE) AS THE COIL OVER STRUT SHOULD NOT BE CROSS THREADED, THAT IS WHY THEY WANTED TO KNOW IF I DID SOMETHING TO THE CAR. LINCOLN TOWN CARS WITH THE COIL OVER STRUT FRONT SUSPENSION ARE BAD FOR FALLING APART AND THIS APPLIES TO THE UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS. I HAVE SEVERAL FRIENDS WITH THIS SAME CAR AND THEY HAVE REPORTED FRACTURED UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS. THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON OCCURRENCE DUE POOR DESIGN OF THE FRONT SUSPENSION. I FEEL A RECALL NEEDS TO HAPPEN AS YOU CAN BE DRIVING YOUR CAR AND THE FRONT END WILL FALL OUT. I AM FORTUNATE AS I HAD ENOUGH SENSE TO KNOW MY CAR WAS NOT HANDLING PROPERLY AND IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT IN FOR SERVICE, A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE NOT BEEN AS FORTUNATE. I AM ATTACHING THE REPAIR BILL TO THIS FILE BUT MY PERSONNEL INFORMATION IS HIDDEN. I AM MAINTAINING THE REPAIR INVOICE IN MY PERSONNEL CAR FILE IF YOU SHOULD NEED IT. A RECALL NEEDS TO BE DONE AND FORD MOTOR COMPANY SHOULD RE-DESIGN THE UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINT ASSEMBLY TO HANDLE THE HEAVY WEIGHT OF THESE CARS AND REIMBURSE OWNERS FOR REPAIRS ALREADY MADE. I WAS TRAVELING WEST ON 64 ON 8\13\15 . THERE WAS A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF TRAFFIC BUT I WAS EXPERIENCING NO PROBLEMS UNTIL MY CAR BEGIN TO SWERVE BACK AND FORTH AND I WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN THE LANE. WE REALIZED THAT WE MUST GET THE CAR OFF THE ROAD AND INTO THE MEDIAN TO AVOID BEING STRUCK OR STRIKING A CAR IN THE RIGHT LANE. AFTER MUCH EFFORT WE WERE ABLE TO DO SO BUT HIT THE GUARD CABLES WHICH RESULTED IN TOTALING OUR LINCOLN. IN AUG OF 2013 WE RECEIVED A RECALL FOR THE RACK AND PINION STEERING FOR OUR CAR AND HAD IT REPAIRED ON 3\21\14. WE HAD TO WAIT FOR THE DEALER TO GET THE PARTS. THERE WAS ANOTHER RECALL ON 11\5\14 SAYING THAT CARS WITH THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT REPAIRED DURING THE FIRST RECALL MAY NOT HAVE BEEN DONE CORRECTLY. MY QUESTION IS WHY DID WE NOT RECEIVE THAT RECALL? I FEEL THAT WE DID EVERYTHING WE COULD TO INSURE THAT THE BEST OF CIRCUMSTANCES OCCURRED IN WHAT WAS MOST CERTAIN GOING TO RESULT IN A CRASH AND PREVENTED OTHERS FROM BEING INJURED. IF WE HAD HAD THAT RECALL WE COULD HAVE HAD OURS CHECKED AND POSSIBLY HAVE AVOIDED THIS ACCIDENT. SINCE THE CAR WAS TOTALED THE ONLY WAY IT COULD BE CHECKED WAS TO START THE CAR AND TRY TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. I WAS DOING 65 ON THE 60 FREEWAY IN CITY OF WALNUT CA. THE CAR WAS IDLING AS I WAS PREPARING TO LEAVE MY EMPLOYER'S PARKING LOT. MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE. AT THE MOMENT I SHIFTED THE CAR INTO DRIVE, THE ENGINE RACED AND LUNGED FORWARD. WITH MY FOOT FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE, THE REAR TIRES SCREECHED, BUT THE BRAKES KEPT THE CAR FROM MOVING MORE THAN SEVERAL FEET.. WITHIN SEVERAL SECONDS, I WAS ABLE TURN OFF THE KEY AND RETURN THE SHIFT LEVER TO PARK. I TRIED TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM IN A SAFE AREA, BUT COULD NOT. MY FOOT WAS NOT ON BOTH PEDALS (BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR) SIMULTANEOUSLY AS THE ENGINE WAS AS IDLING WHEN I SHIFTED INTO DRIVE. THERE IS NO FLOOR MAT TO INTERFERE WITH NORMAL OPERATION. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS IN A "RAISED" POSITION- A FEATURE OF THE CAR. I WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE "SUDDEN ACCELERATION" PROBLEM OTHER DRIVERS HAD REPORTED PREVIOUSLY, BUT I DID READ ABOUT PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE RAISED BRAKE PEDAL AND THE CLOSE PROXIMITY OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL (WITHIN THE PAST FEW DAYS). BEFORE RESEARCHING THE POSSIBLE CAUSE OF THIS INCIDENT, I THOUGHT THE PROBLEM MIGHT HAVE BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH THE LINKAGE OF THE TWO PEDALS. NOW, I'M CONVINCED THE ISSUE WILL NOT BE AN EASY FIX.
