STEERING
Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain model Dorman Steering Shafts, part number 425-359, Solutions Steering Shafts, part number 7-0359, and OE Solutions Steering Shafts, part number 425-359, manufactured April 17, 2014, to September 28, 2015. These aftermarket replacement steering shafts are sold for use in 1995-2002 Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Town Car vehicles. These steering shafts may separate during operation if the integral fastener is loose or missing and if the interfacing vehicle shaft is compressed in length.
Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering shaft, free of charge. The recall began on October 28, 2015. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492, option 5.

ON CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS, PASSENGER VEHICLES, SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, AND MOTOR HOMES CHASSIS, THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH MAY, UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS, LEAK INTERNALLY AND THEN OVERHEAT, SMOKE, OR BURN.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A FUSED WIRING HARNESS. OWNERS OF THE PASSENGER CARS INCLUDED IN THIS CAMPAIGN WILL BE INSTRUCTED TO RETURN THEIR VEHICLES TO THEIR DEALERS TO HAVE THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH DISCONNECTED AS AN INTERIM REPAIR. AS SOON AS REPAIR PARTS ARE AVAILABLE (EXPECTED OCTOBER 2007), OWNERS WILL BE INSTRUCTED TO RETURN TO THE DEALERS FOR INSTALLATION OF A FUSED WIRING HARNESS. THE ONE-PIECE BEARING WITHIN THE LOWER CONTROL ARM BALL JOINT CAN WEAKEN SLOWLY DURING USE AND EVENTUALLY CRACK. THIS COULD RESULT IN SEPARATION OF THE BALL AND CAP OF THE JOINT, ALLOWING THE CONTROL ARM TO DROP TO THE GROUND.

THIS IS NOT A SAFETY RECALL IN ACCORDANCE WITH FEDERAL REGULATION 573. HOWEVER, IT IS DEEMED A SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN BY THE AGENCY. FORD IS INITIATING AN OWNER NOTIFICATION PROGRAM FOR OWNERS OF CERTAIN 1995-1997 CROWN VICTORIA MODEL VEHICLES WITH POLICE, TAXI, AND COMMERCIAL FLEET PACKAGES AND TOWN CAR VEHICLES WITH THE LIVERY PACKAGE. THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE INSUFFICIENT CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE BRAKE LINE AND THE UNDERBODY FRONT FLOOR PAN ASSEMBLY WHICH COULD CAUSE WEAR OF THE BRAKE LINES.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE BRAKE LINES FOR WEAR, INSTALL TWO NEW TUBE BUNDLE CLIPS, AND CHECK THE BRAKE LINES FOR PROPER CLEARANCES. IF THE BRAKE LINES ARE WORN, THE DAMAGED SECTION OF THE BRAKE LINE WILL BE REPLACED.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE VEHICLES AND IF THE JOINT IS FOUND TO HAVE SIGNIFICANT WEAR, THE ARM WILL BE REPLACED. THOSE PITMAN ARMS NOT REPLACED WILL HAVE THE "BALL JOINT" FULLY GREASED.

The contact owns a 1996 Lincoln Town Car. The contact stated while the vehicle was turned on and he was shifting the vehicle from park(P) to drive(D), with his foot on the brake pedal, the vehicle lunged forward at high speed. The contact stated that the acceleration was extreme. The contact observed smoke coming from the rear tires as the vehicle accelerated. The contact was able to safely stop the vehicle after approximately 50 feet but had to depress the brake pedal with force. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was not turned off but was shifted to park(P). The contact had tested and shifted the vehicle from park (P), drive (D), neutral (N) and reverse (R) and the vehicle reacted normally to each gear change. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000. The contact stated that the vehicle was sold to the mechanic who repaired it.

THE PEDAL TRAVELED TO THE FLOORBOARD AND ALL THE WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. WHEN THE CONTACT POURED BRAKE FLUID INTO THE RESERVOIR AND DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL, SMOKE APPEARED FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT NEAR THE MASTER CYLINDER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO BE REPAIRED AND WAS PARKED IN THE MECHANIC'S REPAIR SHOP WHEN THE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE FIRE SPREAD QUICKLY AND DESTROYED THE REPAIR SHOP BUILDING AS WELL AS SEVERAL OTHER BUSINESSES, RESULTING IN OVER 7 MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF DAMAGE. THE FIRE MARSHALL INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE FIRE WAS CAUSED BY THE PARKED VEHICLE BEING INSIDE THE BUILDING. THE FIRE OCCURRED PRIOR TO THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 07V336000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). EXTERIOR LIGHTING Aug 17, 2011
HEADLIGHTS AND DASH PANEL CUT OFF INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING ON SMOOTH PAVEMENT FOR PAST 10 YEARS. I HAVE HAD DEALERSHIP EXPERIENCE THIS BUT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY PROBLEM. ALSO, THE SPEEDOMETER SHOWS CAR SPEED AT 100 OR MORE MPH WHEN STARTING CAR BUT GOES TO NORMAL WHEN MOVING. I JUST REPLACED THE MOTORCRAFT ALTERNATOR WITH A REBUILD VERSION AND THE SPEEDOMETER PROBLEM IS GONE. CAN'T BE SURE THAT THE HEADLIGHT ISSUE IS GONE TOO, BUT THIS SEEMS TO BE THE MAGIC FIX. I'M WONDERING IF A BATCH OF INTERMITTENTLY DEFECTIVE MOTORCRAFT ALTERNATORS WERE OEM SINCE THIS SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM FOR OTHERS. HEADLIGHTS AND DASH PANEL CUT OFF INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING ON SMOOTH PAVEMENT FOR PAST 10 YEARS. I HAVE HAD DEALERSHIP EXPERIENCE THIS BUT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY PROBLEM. ALSO, THE SPEEDOMETER SHOWS CAR SPEED AT 100 OR MORE MPH WHEN STARTING CAR BUT GOES TO NORMAL WHEN MOVING. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 LINCOLN TOWN CAR. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL NOTICE IN SEPTEMBER OF 2007 FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 07V336000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). THE SPEED CONTROL SWITCH WAS DISCONNECTED IN MARCH OF 2008. ONCE THE SWITCH WAS DISCONNECTED, HE BEGAN HEARING A BUZZING SOUND WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND THE ABS LIGHT ILLUMINATED. WHEN TAKEN TO THE DEALER, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BUZZING SOUND THAT THE BRAKES WERE MAKING. HE FILED COMPLAINT NUMBER 0377821518 WITH FORD. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 29,167 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,000.

HE SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT FOR APRIL TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. A REPRESENTATIVE FROM THE DEALER INFORMED HIM THAT THE FORD PARTS WOULD BE UNAVAILABLE UNTIL THE MANUFACTURER SENT THE PARTS TO THE DEALER. DEALERSHIP FAILED TO PROVIDE PROMPT REPAIR OF A FIRE HAZARD RECALL. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT AS THE RECALL REQUESTED FOR THE SPEED CONTROL FIRE HAZARD, THE DEALERSHIP PUT AT LEAST FOUR OTHER VEHICLES AHEAD OF MINE AND THIS IS A SMALL DEALERSHIP. THIS WAS A WORK DAY FOR ME, HENCE THE APPOINTMENT, AND A REPAIR THAT WOULD TAKE LESS THAN 15 MINUTES WAS LOOKING TO TAKE A COUPLE OF HOURS. OBVIOUSLY THE DEALERSHIP MAKES MORE INCOME FROM REGULAR REPAIR JOBS, BUT THIS IS A LINCOLN PROBLEM THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN HANDLED ON A PRIORITY BASIS SINCE IS PRESENTS A FIRE HAZARD. I HAVE DONE MY PART, I CANNOT AFFORD TO TAKE OFF 2 OR 3 HOURS BECAUSE THE RECALL REPAIR IS NOT A MONEY MAKER FOR THE DEALERSHIP. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 LINCOLN TOWN CAR. THE CONTACT HAD HIS VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL SWITCH DISCONNECTED ON 09/20/2007 BY ONE FORD DEALER, AND ON 03/06/2008 BY ANOTHER FORD DEALER. THE DEALER RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO HIM AND STATED THAT THEY MADE THE FINAL REPAIR. MEANWHILE, THE BRAKES FAILED. THE MECHANIC LOOSENED THE BRAKE LINE AND ALL OF THE FLUID CAME OUT OF THE VEHICLE. THEY REPAIRED THE BRAKES, BUT THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL STILL DOES NOT WORK. THE DEALER WANTS A $85.00 FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TO FIND OUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE DEALER STATED THE REPAIR WAS MADE TO THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, BUT DID NOT LAST. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SOMETHING HAD TO BE WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL BEFORE THE REPAIR WAS MADE. I RECEIVED 2 RECALL NOTICES THIS PAST OCTOBER. THE RECALL WAS TO HAVE THE SPEED CONTROL DEVICE REPLACED. ONE FOR MY 96 LINCOLN TOWNCAR AND THE OTHER FOR MY 2000 HOLIDAY RAMBLER (BOTH EQUIPPED WITH FORD MOTORS. I HAVE CONTACTED THE LOCAL FORD DEALER RE THE LINCOLN RIGHT AFTER RECEIVING THE RECALL NOTICE. WAS TOLD THAT FORD SHOULD BE SENDING THE REPLACEMENT SPEED CONTROL DEVICE BY DECEMBER. IT IS NOW THE 16TH OF JAN 2008 AND ALEXANDER FORD HAS NOT RECEIVED THE REPLACEMENT PART. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY THE DELAY. *TR
