VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 114, "THEFT PROTECTION." WATER CONTAMINATION OF THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION OIL CAN LEAD TO VARIOUS FAILURE MODES OF THE TRANSMISSION. ONE OF THESE FAILURE MODELS RESULTS IN INCORRECT OPERATION OF THE PARK LOCK FUNCTION THAT COULD ALLOW A VEHICLE TO ROLL AWAY IF PARKED WITHOUT THE HANDBRAKE PROPERLY SET.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL CHECK THE PARK LOCK FUNCTION; REPOSITION THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION BREATHER TUBE; AND TEST THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FLUSH IF NECESSARY.

THE MATERIAL OF THE PULLEY CAN FRACTURE AND ULTIMATELY FAIL. FAILURE OF THE PULLEY MATERIAL CAN CAUSE THE PULLEY TO THROW OFF THE SERPENTINE BELT.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2000 LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED TO AVOID A COLLISION AHEAD AND THE VEHICLE SKIDDED OFF THE ROAD. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO A CONCRETE BARRIER AND A LIGHT POST. THE AIR BAG FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE CONTACTS HEAD/FACE STRUCK WITH THE STEERING WHEEL DURING THE CRASH. THE CONTACT WORE GLASSES AND DUE TO THE FORCE OF THE CRASH, IT CAUSED HIM TO HAVE TWO BLACK EYES. THE CONTACT ALSO SUSTAINED FRACTURED RIBS, COLLAR BONE, AND LEGS THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT HE WENT IN INTENSIVE CARE UNIT DUE TO BEING IN A COMA AND CURRENTLY TAKING ANTI-SEIZURE MEDICATION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A IMPOUND LOT. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN TAKEN TO LOCAL DEALER OR AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN INFORMED OF FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 94,738.

I WAS DRIVING AT ~10-15 MPH AROUND LAKE MEAD IN NV. AS I PULLED TO A STOP SIGN SMOKE BEGAN TO COME FROM UNDER THE HOOD OF THE CAR. AT FIRST I THOUGHT THE CAR WAS OVERHEATING AND TRIED TO NAVIGATE IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. ALL THE CARS SYSTEMS WENT OUT BEFORE I GOT IT OFF THE ROAD (30 SECONDS FROM THE FIRST SMOKE) AND THE SMOKE WAS BILLOWING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD. I JUMPED OUT AND TRIED TO OPEN THE HOOD, STILL THINKING IT WAS OVERHEATING, BUT I WAS UNABLE TO FIND THE CATCH. I DECIDED TO MOVE AWAY FROM THE CAR JUST IN CASE. I WALKED ABOUT 10 PACES AWAY FROM THE CAR AND TURNED TO SEE FIRE DRIPPING DOWN FROM THE FRONT. I DECIDED TO CALL 911. THE FRONT OF THE CAR WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES BEFORE I COULD DIAL. BY THE TIME THE 911 OPERATOR PICKED UP THE CAR WAS ENGULFED UP TO THE MIDDLE OF THE BODY AND THE TIRES BEGAN EXPLODING (THIS COULD BE HEARD BY THE 911 OPERATOR). BY THE TIME I GOT OFF THE PHONE THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY ENGULFED (THIS WAS LESS THAN 3 MIN FROM SEEING THE FIRST SMOKE). THE CAR BURNED COMPLETELY, LEAVING NO TRACE OF ANYTHING BUT THE METAL FRAME. WHAT IS MOST DISTURBING IS THAT THE BODY/INTERIOR BURNED AS IF THEY HAD BEEN DOUSED WITH AN INCENDIARY. THEY WENT UP SO FAST AND SHOULDN'T BE FLAMMABLE AT ALL. JUST TO EMPHASIZE THIS, I WAS HAULING A SM TRAILER THAT HAD A CANVAS COVER AND THE TARP WAS ONLY SCORCHED AT THE FRONT; NOT BURNING AT ALL. I FOUND MANY OTHER FIRES OF THIS RANGE ROVER JUST LIKE MINE REPORTED ON THE INTERNET. I AM FAIRLY CERTAIN THAT THESE FIRES ARE CAUSED BY A VERY FLAMMABLE HOOD LINER AND THAT THESE CARS ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. WHEN I BOUGHT MY RANGE ROVER USED I HAD NOTICED THAT THE HOOD LINER WAS BURNED WHERE IT WAS CLOSEST TO THE TOP OF THE ENGINE AND IT SEEMED TO BE CAUSED BY THE ENGINE HEAT, BUT I HADN'T RULED OUT HUMAN ACTION. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER. WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, THE CONTACT SMELLED SMOKE AND PULLED THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD. HE NOTICED FLAMES UNDER THE HOOD OF HIS VEHICLE. WITHIN MINUTES, THE ENTIRE VEHICLE WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE AND A REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED TO A JUNK YARD. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 77,000.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER. WHENEVER THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, SHE WOULD HEAR A LOUD NOISE. THERE ARE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURS. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE INTAKE MANIFOLD DEVELOPED A LARGE HOLE AND, BECAUSE IT WAS A HOLE INSTEAD OF A SPLIT, THE FAILURE WOULD NOT BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. SHE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER, BUT HAS NOT RECEIVED A RESPONSE. THE INTAKE MANIFOLD HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 111,000.

WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH ON I-80, MY 2000 RANGE ROVER ENGINE CUT OUT, AFTER PULLING TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, A SMALL FLAME WAS VISIBLE UNDER THE REAR ENGINE. AN ENTIRE FIRE EXTINGUISHER WAS EMPTIED UNDER THE CAR, YET THE VEHICLE BURNED UP 100%. A TOTAL LOSS OF ALL CONTENTS OF THE VEHICLE. MY SON WAS LUCKY TO ESCAPE FROM THE VEHICLE. DT: THE CONSUMER STATES THAT 2000 LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER CAME OUT OF THE PARK LOCK FUNCTION. THIS HAPPENED THREE TIMES. THE CONSUMER WAS IN THE VEHICLE ALL THREE TIMES, WAS ABLE TO HIT THE BRAKE, AND PUT THE PARKING BRAKE ON. THE CONSUMER TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF ALL THREE TIMES. THE CONSUMER HAD TO PUT THE PARKING BRAKE ON EVERY TIME THAT HE GOT OUT OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND ASKED ABOUT A RECALL. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD THE CONSUMER THAT THEY WERE UNAWARE OF ANY RECALL ON LAND ROVERS FOR TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. THE DEALERSHIP DID NOT BELIEVE THE CONSUMER WHEN HE TOLD THEM ABOUT RECALL 00V377000 LISTED ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE. THE CONSUMER HAS NOT CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER YET, BUT WAS GOING TO DO SO. THE CONSUMER WAS GOING TO HAVE TRANSMISSION FLUSHED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, BUT QUESTIONED IF LAND ROVER WAS GOING TO REIMBURSE HIM FOR REPAIR COST. *AK

COOLANT WAS FOUND LEAKING ONTO THE FLOOR OF THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. IN ADDITION, ONE OF THE COOLANT HOSES DEVELOPED A LEAK, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO BEGIN OVERHEATING. THE DEALER REPLACED THE HOSE, BUT ALSO REPORTED THE HEATER CORE O-RINGS NEEDED TO BE SWAPPED. THE O-RINGS CAUSED THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM OF COOLANT LEAKING TO THE VEHICLE'S INTERIOR. AFTER A SHORT ONLINE INVESTIGATION, THIS APPEARS TO BE A PROBLEM FOR QUITE A FEW RANGE ROVER OWNERS.*AK

I PURCHASED A 2000 RANGE ROVER FROM BEAR VALLEY ROVERS IN ATLANTA AND THE VEHICLE WAS/IS IN PRISTINE SHAPE . WHEN I PURCHASED IT, IT HAD 43,000 MILES WITH 5,000 MILES REMAINING ON THE WARRANTY. AT 53,000 THE TRANSMISSION WENT BAD AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS NOT NORMAL THAT A TRANSMISSION WOULD ONLY LAST 53,000 MILES AND THE VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN OFF-ROAD A DAY IN ITS LIFE. *JB

AFTER APPROXIMATELY ONE MONTH OF OPERATION, I NOTICED THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR VIBRATED CONSTANTLY MAKING IT VERY DIFFICULT TO VIEW TRAFFIC TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE DRIVER. THE SENSATION IS SIMILAR TO FOCUSING ON AN OBJECT WHILE BEING TOSSED TO AND FRO. I HAVE MADE MANY REQUESTS TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE SITUATION REPAIRED TO NO AVAIL. I AM NOW IN THE PROCESS OF FILING A COMPLAINT THROUGH THE STATES LEMON LAW STATUTE. SEVERAL CUSTOMERS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE MIRROR AND NONE HAVE RECEIVED ANY ASSISTANCE. I HAVE RECEIVED CONFLICTING RESPONSES FROM TECHNICAL AND ENGINEERING PROFESSIONALS ASSOCIATED WITH LAND ROVER. DEALER ADJUSTED TRANSMISSION LINKAGE, AND NEXT DAY CONSUMER PARKED IN A SHOPPING CENTER PARKING LOT. VEHICLE WAS PUT IN PARK, TURNED OFF, CONSUMER GOT OUT, AND THE VEHICLE ROLLED FORWARD HITTING A LADY. MANUFACTURER AND DEALER HAVE NOT FOUND A REMEDY. *AK *SLC
