POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DRIVESHAFT
LAND ROVER IS RECALLING 19,168 MY 2003-2005 RANGE ROVER VEHICLES. THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL COUPLING SLEEVE AND THE PROPELLER SHAFT MAY BE MISALIGNED, RESULTING IN SPLINE WEAR OVER A PERIOD OF TIME. AS THE WEAR BETWEEN THE PROPELLER SHAFT AND THE DIFFERENTIAL SPLINE COUPLING PROGRESSES, NOISE AND VIBRATION ARE EXPECTED.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A REVISED DESIGN OF THE PROPELLER SHAFT, THE FLANGE KIT AND HEAT SHIELD KIT. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 6, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT LAND ROVER AT 1-800- 637-6837.

The contact owns a 2004 Land Rover Range Rover. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle independently downshifted without warning. The contact stated that the vehicle resumed normal operation after the failure and returned moments later. The contact had notified the dealer of the failure but was informed that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 08V635000 (Power Train). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 154,000.

DRIVING 75MPH ON INTERSTATE, WHILE PASSING SEMI TRAILER, SUDDENLY A LOUD THUMP AND LOSS OF DRIVE TO WHEELS, LOST OF POWER AND SUDDEN LOST UP HILL I LOST CONTROL OF VEHICLE. SEMI AVOIDED ME, AND I WAS BARELY ABLE TO CONTROL BODY ROLL BUT SAFELY BROUGHT VEHICLE TO STOP OF THE SIDE OF ROAD. TOWED TO MY MECHANIC, HE REPORTED THAT DIFFERENTIAL ALONG WITH PROP SHAFT HAD FAILED. HE BELIEVED THIS WAS A RECALL ISSUE. DEALER IN SANTA FE, NM SAYS NO ACTIVE RECALL. I HAVE READ OTHERWISE AND THAT THE ISSUE CAN OCCUR EVEN AFTER INITIAL RECALL WORK DONE.

STEERING COLUMN WOULD TELESCOPE BUT NOT RAISE/LOWER. TURNED VEHICLE OFF, RESTARTED, KEPT TRYING ADJUSTMENT LEVER UNTIL FINALLY COLUMN RETRACTED THEN RAISED TO NORMAL POSITION.

I WAS APPROACHING A STOP LIGHT LESS THAN 2 MILES INTO A TRIP. AT REGULAR SPEED I HEAVILY APPLIED BRAKES AND THE PEDAL WENT SOFT. I FLOORED THE PEDAL IN ATTEMPT TO STOP; THANKFULLY NO ONE HAD BEGUN TO MOVE AS I CARRIED INTO THE INTERSECTION BEFORE STOPPING. I PULLED OVER, READ THE MANUAL TO ENSURE I KNEW WHERE TO LOOK FOR BRAKE FLUID PRESSURE SENSORS. I ALSO CHECKED FOR LEAKS BUT DID NOT NOTICE ANYTHING; BRAKES OPERATION WAS NOTICEABLY DIFFERENT BUT OK SO I CAUTIOUSLY CONTINUED DRIVING (NO WARNING LIGHTS NO SENSORS HAD GONE OFF). APPROXIMATELY 35 MILES LATER AND AT HIGHWAY SPEED SENSORS AND LIGHTS WENT CRAZY TELLING ME I HAD NO BRAKE PRESSURE. PAID $723.53 DROVE ABOUT 1 BLOCK AND THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. TURNED AROUND AND TOOK TRUCK BACK TO DEALER. THEY SAID THEY DID SOMETHING TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE NEXT DAY, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON. HAVE BEEN TO THE CHERRY HILL, NJ DEALER 5 TIMES, SPENT HOURS WAITING AND CAN'T DRIVE MY TRUCK BECAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS STILL ON AND MY INSPECTION STICKER HAS EXPIRED. WON'T BE GOING BACK TO THE CHERRY HILL DEALER. TOOK TRUCK TO THE SHOP RECOMMENDED BY THE NJ INSPECTION DEPARTMENT AND WAS TOLD THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER AT RIGHT FRONT WELD IS CRACKED . I PURCHASED A 2004 RANGE ROVER ON THE EVENING OF 05/12/11 FROM MOMENTUM LAND ROVER IN TEXAS. ON THE MORNING OF 05/13/11 THE CAR BEGAN TO OVER HEAT AND STOPPED. TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY CLAIMED THAT THE WRONG TYPE OF COOLANT WAS PLACED IN THE CAR. MIND YOU, THAT I DID NOT SERVICE THE CAR WITHIN THE 10 HOURS I DROVE OFF THE LOT. IT STARTED ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO AFTER I BROUGHT MY CAR IN FOR A RECALL ISSUE I RECEIVED IN THE MAIL REGARDING THE DIFFERENTIALS AND FRONT DRIVE SHAFT. I FIGURE IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE IT FIXED AS A PREVENTABLE MEASURE. SHORTLY AFTER (ABOUT 2 WEEKS) I STARTED NOTICING "TRANS PROG ERROR" APPEAR ON MY DASHBOARD DISPLAY BUT IT WOULD DISAPPEAR AND REAPPEAR AND FIGURE IF THE LIGHT DOES NOT STAY ON IT SHOULD NOT BE AN ISSUE. THAN MY CAR ONE DAY WHILE DRIVING ON THE FAST LANE OF THE HIGHWAY JUST LOST POWER AND DISPLAYED TO PUT CAR IN NEUTRAL. I HAD TO GET THE CAR TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP. 2004 LAND ROVER FREELANDER HSE, ENGINE PROBLEMS AT 50K MILES- ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS, REAR PASSENGER WINDOW MOTOR, VERY COSTLY, BOUGHT THE CAR IN 2007 WITH 38K, HARDLY DRIVE THE CAR CAUSE I TRAVEL FOR WORK AND HAVE RENTAL CARS, BUT WHEN I DO DRIVE THE FREELANDER- IT CAUSES ME MONEY, SOMETHING WILL BREAK EVEN IF I DRIVE IT FOR 5 MILES...LAND ROVER SHOULD COMPENSATE FREELANDER OWNERS BECAUSE THESE CARS SHOULDN'T BE SOLD TO US WHEN THE CAR ITSELF IS UNSAFE AND A LEMON IN THE BEGINNING...PLEASE- HELP!! CAR IDLES HIGH AND REVS TO 4 RPMS TO CHANGE TO ANOTHER GEAR IT APPEARS TRANSMISSION STRUGGLES TO SWITCH GEARS AND PROBLEM NOT FIXED... I BELIEVE IT IS A DEALER DEFECT AND SHOULD BE REPLACED BY DEALER ....IT APPEARS ITS A SENSOR NOT SENDING CORRECT MESSAGE TO TRANSMISSION , HOWEVER SENSOR IS CONNECTED TO RADIATOR AND THUS I WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE ENTIRE RADIATOR....... THIS IS ABSOLUTELY A DEALER MALFUNCTION I SHOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS I HAVE 59,000 MILES AND MY WARRANTY WAS UP AT 50 THOUSAND.......HAS THIS BEEN REPORTED BEFORE?? I HAD A 2006 RANGE ROVER SUPER CHARGE WITH ENGINE/TRANSMISSION PROBLEM AND COOLANT PROBLEMS. THIS PROBLEM EXISTED FROM 5,000 MILES ALL THE WAY TO 64,000. I KEPT COMPLAINING AND BRINGING THE CAR BACK TO THE FIRST PLACE IT BROKE DOWN WHICH WAS IN GEORGIA. I TRIED TO TAKE THE TRUCK TO A SERVICE PLACE IN NEW JERSEY BUT WAS TOLD I HAD TO BRING THE CAR BACK TO THE FIRST PLACE WHERE IT WAS SO CALLED REPAIRED! WHICH TO ME WAS TOO FAR! AFTER BRINGING THE CAR AND COMPLAINING TO LAND ROVER CORPORATE NO ONE WOULD HELP ME AND THE TRANSMISSION WENT ON THE CAR AND THE RADIATOR WHICH I WAS FORCED TO PAY FOR BOTH EVEN THOUGH I WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY AND THE PROBLEM WAS NEVER FIXED FOR THE WHOLE TIME I HAD THE VEHICLE! THIS CREATED A HARDSHIP FOR ME AND IT COST ME OVER $15,000 WHICH I PAID AND WHEN I RETURNED THE VEHICLE I AM NOW BEING SUED FOR OVER $12,000 DOLLARS WHICH SOUNDS CRAZY TO ME AND THE SERVICE MANAGER WHO I COMPLAINED ABOUT WAS LATER FIRED FOR NOT HONORING WARRANTIES AND BEING DISRESPECTFUL! MANY LAND ROVER FREELANDERS ARE HAVING SERIOUS PROBLEMS DUE TO THE FAULTY CONSTRUCTION OF THE ENGINE. PRIOR TO COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE, THERE MAY BE UNEXPLAINED COOLANT LOSS, OVERHEATING, AND OTHER PROBLEMS RELATED TO HEAD GASKET FAILURE. BECAUSE THE CYLINDER LINERS ARE STEEL AND THE BLOCK IS ALLOY, THE CYLINDER LINERS TEND TO WORK THEIR WAY INTO THE BLOCK. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THERE IS NO WAY TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE SHORT OF ENGINE REPLACEMENT, AND MANY OF THE REPLACEMENT ENGINES HAVE THE SAME CONSTRUCTION DEFECT AS THE ORIGINAL VEHICLE. *TR
