ON THE AFTERNOON OF OCTOBER 25, 2011, I DECIDED TO RUN THE ENGINE OF MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER?S 1992 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CAR HAD BEEN STORED IN A COVERED AREA, AND NOT DRIVEN, SINCE AUGUST 15, 2011. BECAUSE THE BATTERY WAS CONNECTED, I FELT I SHOULD RUN THE ENGINE FOR A SHORT PERIOD. I UNLOCKED AND OPENED THE DRIVER DOOR AND SAT ON THE EDGE OF THE DRIVER SEAT WITH THE DOOR OPEN. MY INTENTION WAS TO START THE PARKED CAR AND LET IT RUN FOR A SHORT PERIOD (SEVERAL MINUTES) IN ORDER TO CHECK AND CHARGE THE BATTERY. INTERIOR REAR VIEW MIRROR OBSTRUCTS VIEW TO THE RIGHT FOR TALL PEOPLE. I'VE ALMOST HAD 3-4 SERIOUS ACCIDENTS BECAUSE THE REAR VIEW MIRROR IN MY 1992 TOYOTA CAMRY IS LOCATED RATHER LOW IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. I'M 6'3", AND WHEN I LOOK TO THE RIGHT, THE REAR VIEW MIRROR CAUSES A LARGE BLIND SPOT AS IT IS DIRECTLY IN MY FIELD OF VISION. THIS IS ESPECIALLY PROBLEMATIC AT INTERSECTIONS AS IT BLOCKS THE VIEW OF TRAFFIC COMING FROM THE RIGHT. PLEASE DO A STUDY OF ACCIDENTS INVOLVING TALL DRIVERS (MORE THAN 6'2" IN HEIGHT) AND SEE IF THERE IS AN INCREASED NUMBER AT INTERSECTIONS INVOLVING CRASHES WITH CARS COMING FROM THE RIGHT. THIS APPLIES TO MANY DIFFERENT BRANDS OF CARS. THE SOLUTION WOULD BE SOME SORT OF ADAPTER THAT WOULD ALLOW US TO SITUATE THE MIRROR CLOSER TO THE ROOF OF THE PASSENGER CABIN. MY CAR STOPPED FOR A RED LIGHT AND I WAS FIRST IN LINE TO PROCEED ONTO HIGHWAY #290. I WENT UP THE RAMP AND MY CAR TOOK OFF ON ITS OWN AND I COULD NOT BRAKE OR STEER MY CAR. CAR CRASHED INTO A TREE AND STOPPED. MY AIRBAG DEPLOYED. I WAS HURT FACIALLY AND I UNSTRAPPED MY SEAT BELT AND GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND SAT ON THE GROUND WAITING FOR HELP. CAR BEHIND ME STOPPED TO HELP AND CALLED 911 FOR AMBULANCE AND POLICE USING MY CELL PHONE. MY CAR WAS CONSIDERED A TOTAL LOSS BY MY INSURER. I DID NOT HAVE THE CAR CHECKED BY A MECHANIC BECAUSE I WAS ADVISED IT COULD TAKE A COUPLE OF YEARS TO BE HEARD IN COURT AND IN THE MEANTIME, I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR STORAGE AND WOULD NOT HAVE THE MONEY FOR A DOWN PAYMENT.
