ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, THE FRONT COIL SPRINGS COULD FRACTURE DUE TO CORROSION ASSOCIATED WITH SALT USED ON THE ROADWAYS DURING THE WINTER. A FRACTURED SPRING COULD MOVE PAST THE SPRING SEAT AND CONTACT A FRONT TIRE.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL PROTECTIVE SPRING SHIELDS. IN ADDITION, FORD IS EXTENDING THE WARRANTY COVERAGE OF THE FRONT COIL SPRINGS IN ALL OTHER STATES, FOR FRACTURE ONLY, UP TO 10 YEARS OF SERVICE OR 150,000 MILES, WHICHEVER OCCURS FIRST. IF THE VEHICLE HAS ALREADY ACCUMULATED MORE THAN 150,000 MILES, THIS COVERAGE WILL LAST UNTIL JULY 31, 2005. IF EITHER FRONT COIL SPRING FRACTURES, DEALERS WILL REPLACE BOTH FRONT SPRINGS AT NO CHARGE TO THE OWNER. AN INTERIM NOTICE WAS SENT TO OWNERS ON AUGUST 2, 2004. PARTS ARE NOW AVAILABLE FOR THE 2000-2001 MY VEHICLES AND OWNERS WERE SENT A LETTER ON JANUARY 10, 2005, ADVISING THEM TO BRING IN THEIR VEHICLES FOR REPAIR PARTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE AVAILABLE FOR THE 1999 MY VEHICLES BY THE END OF FEBRUARY 2005 AND OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES WILL BE NOTIFIED THEN. CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ADJUSTABLE PADELS ARE BEING RECALLED IN ORDER TO ADJUST THE BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS TO A MINIMUM OF 50 MM OF LATERAL SEPARATION. SIMULTANEOUS APPLICATION OF BOTH THE BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS COULD RESULT IN AN INCREASE IN ENGINE RPM.

Someone pulled out in front of me as I was slowing down to make a left turn. I T-boned their vehicle while going 35mph, resulting in a total loss for my 2000 Ford Taurus. (This was in 2018 so it was not a new car). My driver steering wheel airbag DID NOT deploy. I was wearing my seat belt. I still have chest pains when I sneeze and cough, even 4 years later (in November 2022, at time of writing), and in the last year (2021) received a cortisone shot in my left shoulder. I was offered a neck brace in the ambulance and was prescribed an arm sling in the hospital. I was diagnosed with whiplash. I believe I was given pain medication. Someone from the NHTSA in Indiana contacted me and we spoke briefly about it that week, so this may have been previously reported to this agency. I only found out this week that the 2000 Ford Taurus had a history of airbag issues, which is why I bring this up now. I think the car has already been scrapped, so no chance of examination unfortunately. As above, my safety was in jeopardy. Had I been going faster, I could have died. (Apparently someone DID die from a faulty Taurus front airbag.) I, to this day, have chest pain down to my elbows when I sneeze or cough. My doctor says it's a musculoskeletal strain. Ford has not issued recalls for airbags. The vehicle was declared totaled on scene by the police officer and then towed by a towing service. The towing service said the undeployed airbag was "a ticking time bomb" and really unsafe to attempt to repair. I sent pictures to the at-fault driver's insurance, so it was also inspected by insurance. I do not remember any seeing warning messages. I would have checked any unfamiliar warnings or dash lights. Side note: For number of injured, I think I was the only one to take an ambulance. At-fault driver first hesitated to call 911, but eventually did. There were two people in his car, including himself: driver, and passenger in front seat.

I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 35MPH AND I LET OFF THE GAS PEDAL AND NOTICED THE CAR WAS GAINING SPEED. I THEN SHIFTED IN TO NEUTRAL AND THE MOTOR BEGAN TO REV TO 4K RPMS. MY THROTTLE HAD GOT STUCK. I WAS DRIVING MY 2000 FORD TAURUS DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT 70 MPH WITH MY WIFE AND SMALL CHILD, ON OUR WAY TO CHURCH, WHEN THE PASSENGER SIDE SPRING BROKE AND NEARLY PULLED OUR CAR INTO A GUARD RAIL AND OFF A BRIDGE. THIS HAPPENED SOMETIME IN 2004 AND I CAN STILL REMEMBER THE EXACT LOCATION ON HWY 59. IT'S A DAY I DOUBT I EVER FORGET. I REMEMBER THE MECHANIC TELLING ME A FRONT SPRING SHOULD NEVER FAIL. HE SAID THERE WERE NO CURRENT RECALLS, SO I WAS STUCK WITH THE BILL. I REMEMBER BEING FURIOUS WITH FORD NOT ONLY BECAUSE MY FAMILY NEARLY DIED, BUT BECAUSE THEY WOULDN'T OWN UP TO SOMETHING THAT SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN. HERE IT IS NEARLY 12 YEARS LATER, AND I FOUND AN INVOICE FROM 2008 FOR NEW STRUTS AND SWAY BARS THAT COST ME NEARLY $1,000. I CAN'T HELP BUT THINK THAT BILL WAS SOMEHOW RELATED TO WHAT HAPPENED WHEN MY SPRING BROKE IN 2004, BUT MAYBE NOT. BASED ON THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS, I FEEL IT IS TIME FOR THE RECALL TO BE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE OTHER FORD OWNERS, ESPECIALLY SINCE WE ARE ALL DEALING WITH THE SAME EXACT ISSUE. CONSEQUENCE: IF THE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLE RETURN SPRING IS UNSEATED, THE DOOR MAY UNLATCH IN THE EVENT OF A SIDE IMPACT CRASH, INCREASING THE RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY. 2000 FORD TAURUS ATTORNEY REPRESENTING CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE DEFECTIVE POWER WINDOW SWITCH *CN THE CONSUMER'S SON INADVERTENTLY ACTIVATED THE DEFECTIVE AND UNSAFE POWER WINDOW SWITCH. THE WINDOW CLOSED AROUND HIS HEAD AND NECK PREVENTING HIM FROM CALLING TO HIS MOTHER. THE CONSUMER WAS UNAWARE HER SOME WAS IN TRAPPED, BECAUSE SHE WAS CLEANING THE SNOW FROM THE CAR. THE CONSUMER FINALLY NOTICED HER SON IN DISTRESS AND ATTEMPTED TO RESUSCITATE HIM. MOMENTS LATER, SHE RUSHED HIM TO THE HOSPITAL. AS I APPROACHED A STOP LIGHT I HEARD A BRIEF FAINT WINE AND MY VEHICLE FROZE. I COULD TURN THE VEHICLE ON AND OFF AND SHIFT IT INTO GEAR BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. I WAS PUSHED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND AWAITED A TOW TRUCK. WE CHANGED THE TRANSMISSION OIL AND FILTER HOPING FOR THE BEST BUT NO LUCK. THE CAR STILL SITS. *JS

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD TAURUS. THE CONTACT HAD TO MAKE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO START THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE STARTER AND SOLENOID FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 150,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD TAURUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE REVERSING, THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE BLEW. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE COIL SPRING FRACTURED. AS A RESULT, THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC REPLACED THE COIL SPRING AND TIRE. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT ON A DIFFERENT OCCASION, THE FRONT PASSENGERS COIL SPRING AND TIRE HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THEAPPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.

CAR HAD NOT BEEN DRIVEN FOR A MONTH OR TWO. AFTER STARTING IT ONE DAY IN EARLY MARCH, OWNER HEARD SPRING ON THE FRONT, LEFT STRUT POP AND BREAK. THE CAR WAS NOT IN MOTION NOR HAD IT BEEN FOR QUITE SOME TIME. IN AN ATTEMPT TO TAKE IT TO A LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP, THE SPRING PUNCTURED TIRE. THE SET OF FOUR TIRES HAD BEEN RECENTLY PURCHASED BY OWNER. OWNER HAD TO PAY FOR TOW, BRAND NEW TIRE, AND BOTH FRONT QUICK STRUTS FOR VEHICLE PLUS LABOR COSTS. THERE WAS A RECALL ISSUED ON 7-15-2004 REGARDING INSTALLING PANELS TO PROTECT THE TIRES FROM THE EXACT TYPE OF DAMAGES INCURRED. DAHL FORD DEALERSHIP STATED THE RECALL DID NOT APPLY TO VEHICLE'S SPECIFIC VIN, SO, THEY WOULD NOT PUT THE PANELS IN NOR REPLACE DAMAGED COMPONENTS AT NO CHARGE. OWNER ADVISED DAHL FORD THAT THIS RECALL WAS SENT FROM ADVANCE AUTO PARTS ONLINE GARAGE SERVICES, SO, IT CANNOT BE TOO INVALID. OWNER ALSO WAS TOLD BY EMPLOYEES OF A LOCAL MEINEKE CAR CARE CENTER THAT THE ISSUES FOR THE CAR SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. FORD MOTOR COMPANY REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN REGISTERED IN ONE OF THE STATES WHERE THE DAMAGE TO STRUTS AND SPRINGS CAN OCCUR--FROM ROAD SALT--AND OWNER SPENT CLOSE TO $800 REMEDYING A PROBLEM THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. THE VIN DOES NOT INDICATE THAT THE PANELS WERE EVER INSTALLED AT AN EARLIER DATE, AND THE LACK OF DOING SO CAUSED THE EXACT TYPE OF ISSUE OUTLINED IN RECALL NUMBER 04S17. *TR
