VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
FORD IS RECALLING MODEL YEARS 1995-2003 WINDSTAR, 2000-2003 EXCURSION DIESEL, 1993-1997 AND 1999-2003 F-250 SD THROUGH F-550 SD DIESEL, 1992-2003 E-150 THROUGH E-550, 1995-2002 EXPLORER, 1997 AND 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER, 1995-1997 AND 2001-2003 RANGER, AND 1994 F53 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE TEXAS INSTRUMENTS SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH (SCDS). THE SCDS MAY LEAK INTERNALLY AND THEN OVERHEAT, SMOKE, OR BURN.
Remedy: FORD WILL NOTIFY OWNERS THAT DEALERS WILL INSTALL A FUSED WIRING HARNESS IN LINE WITH THE SCDS. ON 1999-2003 WINDSTAR VEHICLES WITH A LEAKING SCDS, DEALERS WILL ALSO INSPECT THE ABS CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR AND REPAIR AS NECESSARY. REPAIRS WILL BE COMPLETED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 27, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-888-222-2751.

FORD IS RECALLING 225,000 MY 1992-2003 ECONOLINE, MY 1993-1995 TAURUS SHO, MY 1992-1998 CROWN VICTORIA, MY 1993 BRONCO, F-SERIES, MY 1995-1997 F-SERIES SUPER DUTY STRIPPED CHASSIS, MY 1992-1998 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS, AND MY 1992-1995 LINCOLN TOWN CAR VEHICLES. THE AFFECTED VEHICLES WERE PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED USING A WIRING HARNESS THAT IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE VEHICLE CIRCUIT POLARITY.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW WIRING HARNESS, OR REPLACE THE MATING ELECTRICAL COMPONENT. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 18, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A FUSED WIRING HARNESS. OWNERS OF THE PASSENGER CARS INCLUDED IN THIS CAMPAIGN WILL BE INSTRUCTED TO RETURN THEIR VEHICLES TO THEIR DEALERS TO HAVE THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH DISCONNECTED AS AN INTERIM REPAIR. PURCHASED A 9000 LB. MOTORHOME EQUIPPED WITH NEW "AUTOGUARD" LT 225-75R16 TIRES INSTALLED IN 2016. WHILE DRIVING THE INTERSTATE IN IDAHO,NOTICED A ROUGH RIDE, ATTRIBUTED TO TO THE FACT THAT THEY WERE PAVING THE HIGHWAY REQUIRING FREQUENT STOPS. PULLED OFF THE HIGHWAY FOR FUEL AND DISCOVERED AN OUTSIDE DUAL WORN THRU THE STEEL BELTS ON ONE AREA OF THE TIRE. THE TIRE DEALER DISCOVERED THAT TWO ADDITIONAL REAR TIRES WERE WORN IN A SIMILAR MANNER, ONE WORN 360 DEGREES BUT ONLY ON ONE SIDE OF THE TIRE THE OTHER SIDE STILL HAD TREAD {VISIBLE IN THE PHOTOS}THE OTHER THREE TIRES WERE NOT ABNORMALLY WORN - INTACT. THESE TIRES HAD BEEN CHECKED FOR CONDITION THAT MORNINGS DEPARTURE. THESE TIRES WERE THREE YEARS OLD AS VERIFIED BY THE TIRE DEALER REPLACING THEM, HIS DIAGNOSIS WAS TREAD SEPARATION. ALL SIX TIRES WERE REPLACED AS A RESULT OF THIS NEAR DISASTER. THE ESTIMATED MILES DRIVEN ON THESE TIRES IS 2186, THE REPLACEMENT TIRES NOW HAVE 1664 MILES ON THEM AND ARE VISIBLY NEW. OBVIOUSLY, A 50% FAILURE RATE{3 OUT OF 6 TIRES} WITH SO LITTLE USE INDICATES THAT THESE TIRES ARE DANGEROUS AND SHOULD NOT BE SOLD IN THIS COUNTRY. ONLY TIMING AND LUCK PREVENTED A PERHAPS FATAL ACCIDENT IN THIS CASE. I AM COMPELLED TO BRING THIS TO YOUR ATTENTION AND EXPECT ACTION ON YOUR PART. HE IMMEDIATELY SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. THE DEALER PLACED HIM ON A WAITING LIST FOR THE PARTS AND STATED THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE ARRIVED IN DECEMBER OF 2007. HE CALLED THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE PARTS WERE UNAVAILABLE AND ADVISED HIM TO HAVE THE SWITCH DISCONNECTED. THE CLOSET DEALER THAT WOULD DISCONNECT THE SWITCH IS APPROXIMATELY 2.5 HOURS AWAY, BUT THEY DID NOT KNOW WHEN THE PARTS WOULD BE AVAILABLE EITHER. HE IS IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING THE SWITCH DISCONNECTED. THERE HAD BEEN NO FAILURE TO DATE. THE POWERTRAIN AND RECALL NUMBER WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 70,000.

I MOVED THE VEHICLE TO A FLATTER AREA, SO I COULD SLEEP IN IT AT THE CAMPGROUND. SHORTLY BEFORE 4 A.M. I AWOKE TO A SMELL AND SAW FLAMES SHOOTING OVER THE WINDSHIELD, COMING FROM THE ENGINE. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE, WHICH BURNED COMPLETELY IN MINUTES. THE LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED. I CONTACTED FORD AND I AM NOW WAITING FOR A WRITTEN RESPONSE. CRUISE CONTROL WOULD NOT DISENGAGE AT APPROX. 70 MPH WHEN DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. I WAS ABLE TO REDUCE THE SPEED BY PUMPING THE BRAKES ALTHOUGH EACH TIME I REMOVED MY FOOT FROM THE BRAKE PEDAL THE VAN CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE OUT OF CONTROL. AFTER APPROX. 15 MINUTES AND A VERY FEARFUL RIDE, I WAS ABLE TO EXIT THE FREEWAY AND BRING THE VAN TO A STOP IN A LARGE PARKING LOT. I WAS ONLY ABLE TO DO SO BY APPLYING EXTREME PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES AND PRAYING THAT THEY WOULD NOT FAIL. I QUICKLY TURNED OFF THE IGNITION AND PUT THE VAN IN PARK. I HAD THE VAN TOWED TO SHAMROCK FORD IN DUBLIN, CA. EVEN THOUGH I WAS PAST THE 5 YR. EXTENDED WARANTEE, WITH THE LOW MILEAGE I CONTACTED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE REQUESTING THIS BE REPLACED BY FORD AT NO COST TO ME. I CONSIDERED THIS FAILURE OF EQUIPMENT A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. FORD TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO FOR ME AND THE REPAIR WOULD BY MY RESPOSIBILITY.*AK

THIS VEHICLE HAS 4 LEAF SPRINGS ON EACH SIDE(A PICKUP TRUCK SUSPENSION) INSTEAD OF A MOTORHOME SUSPENSION WHICH SHOULD HAVE 9 SPRINGS ON EACH SIDE. THERE IS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN OUT THAT COVERS THIS "LIFE SAFETY PROBLEN" # 95-9-6 (MAY 95). IN MY SITUATION I WAS ACCELERATING UP A HILL AND AROUND A BEND IN THE ROAD WHEN WE HIT A POT HOLE WHICH CAUSED THE SEVERE SWAYING MOTION, WHICH MADE IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTROL. MYSELF AND MY FAMILY [XXX] NEAR ROLLED THIS VEHICLE DOWN INTO A RAVENE. DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO DIE BEFOR A RECALL IS ISSUED. I ONLY ASKED THE DEALER TO INSTALL THE KIT THAT THEY HAVE FOR THIS PROBLEM BUT THEY WANT TO CHARGE ME A THOUSAND DOLLARS TO FIX WHAT THEY MUST HAVE KNOWN TO BE AN INSUFICIENT LEAF SPRING INSTALLATION AT THE TIME OF MANUFACTURING.
