What is a vehicle safety recall?

A vehicle safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determines that a defect in a motor vehicle creates an unreasonable risk to safety, or that the vehicle fails to meet a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Once a recall is issued, the manufacturer is required by federal law (49 U.S.C. § 30120) to repair, replace, or refund the vehicle without charge to the owner. The repair obligation lasts at least 15 years from the date the vehicle was first sold, regardless of mileage, ownership history, or warranty status.

The list below contains every recall campaign in NHTSA's official database, over 30,271 campaigns covering tens of millions of individual vehicles dating back to 1966. Each entry includes the official NHTSA campaign number (used to schedule the repair at any franchised dealer), the affected component, the defect description, the consequence of the failure, and the manufacturer's remedy. How to read a recall entry

Each recall card on this page surfaces the four pieces of information that matter most to vehicle owners:

  • Component. The system or part affected by the defect, brakes, airbags, fuel system, electrical, etc. NHTSA uses a standardized component taxonomy.
  • Summary. Plain-English description of the defect and what is expected to fail.
  • Consequence. The actual safety risk, fire, loss of brakes, airbag rupture, sudden stalling. This is the most important field for understanding severity.
  • Remedy. What the dealer will do to fix the vehicle. This tells you how long the repair will take and whether parts are likely to be available.

A small share of recalls, typically less than 3 percent, also carry severity flags such as "Park Outside" or "Do Not Drive." When a recall has one of these flags, NHTSA is recommending that owners take additional precautions until the repair is performed. Park Outside means the defect can ignite a fire even when the vehicle is parked; Do Not Drive means the failure mode is severe enough that NHTSA cannot recommend continuing to operate the vehicle. Volvo Bus Corporation (Volvo Bus) is recalling certain 2023-2025 Volvo 9700 buses. Metallic debris within the electrical connectors of the Automatic Fire Suppression System (AFSS) may cause a short circuit, resulting in a false warning to the driver, an engine shutdown, and the release of chemical fire extinguishing agent in the engine compartment.

Volvo Bus Corporation (Volvo Bus) is recalling certain 2025 Volvo 9700 buses. The emergency exit labels that provide exit identification and operating instructions may not be secured properly, allowing the labels to detach. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 217, "Bus Emergency Exits and Window Retention and Release."

Due a manufacturing error, the guide plate in the park brake control valve may prematurely wear creating a condition that causes the park brake lever to fail to completely apply the parking brakes.

Certain conditions may cause the affected coaches to go into a software controlled mode that would result in the throttle signal being fixed at 1750rpms regardless of throttle pedal input from the driver.

PREVOST IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2012 VOLVO 9700 MOTOR COACHES. DUE TO A SOFTWARE ERROR, THE VEHICLES MAY COME TO A SUDDEN STOP BY BRAKE APPLICATION IF THE SENSOR READS THAT THE WHEELCHAIR LIFT DOOR IS NOT COMPLETELY CLOSED.

PREVOST CAR INC. (PREVOST) IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2013 VOLVO 9700 MOTOR COACHES. ON SOME VEHICLES, THE QUANTITY OF EMERGENCY EXIT WINDOWS IS INSUFFICIENT TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 217, “BUS EMERGENCY EXITS AND WINDOW RETENTION AND RELEASE.”

Consequence: IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY, PASSENGERS MAY BE DELAYED IN EXITING THE VEHICLE DUE TO LIMITED EMERGENCY WINDOWS, INCREASING THE RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY.

PREVOST IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2011 VOLVO 9700 MOTOR COACHES MANUFACTURED FROM OCTOBER 31, 2008, THROUGH JULY 1, 2011. ON SOME VEHICLES, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY OF POORLY TIGHTENED NUTS ON THE FRONT AND REAR FUSE BOX CONNECTIONS.
185 vehicles affected Manufacturer: PREVOST CARS, INC.
Consequence: THERE COULD BE INTERRUPTIONS IN THE ELECTRICAL SUPPLY WHICH MAY CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL WITHOUT WARNING. ADDITIONALLY, THE LOOSE CONNECTIONS MAY CREATE EXCESSIVE HEAT WHICH MAY LEAD TO A FIRE.
