STRUCTURE
TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1998 THROUGH 2010 SIENNA PASSENGER VEHICLES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN AUGUST 7, 1997 AND JANUARY 4, 2010, CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN OR ORIGINALLY SOLD IN CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WASHINGTON DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA, AND WISCONSIN. THE SUBJECT VEHICLES ARE EQUIPPED WITH THE SPARE TIRE STOWED UNDER THE VEHICLE. IF THE VEHICLE IS OPERATED IN THE COLD CLIMATE REGIONS OF THE UNITED STATES WHERE ROAD SALT IS FREQUENTLY USED, WATER SPLASHED BACKWARDS WITH HIGH CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT CAN REACH THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER AND CORRODE THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER ASSEMBLY CABLE.
Remedy: TOYOTA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS WITH AN INTERIM LETTER INITIALLY INSTRUCTING THEM TO BRING THEIR VEHICLE TO AUTHORIZED DEALERS TO INSPECT FOR CORROSION. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR REPAIR, WHO STATED THAT THE ENTIRE GEAR SHIFT MODULE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 150,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 225,000.

CONSUMER REQUESTS REIMBURSEMENT OF FAULTY TIRE CARRIER REPAIRS. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED IN EARLY 2006, HE NOTICED THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER WAS INOPERABLE, AND APPARENTLY, IT HAD RUSTED IN PLACE. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A SERVICE REPAIR STATION, WHERE THEY REPLACED THE CORRODED SPARE TIRE ASSEMBLY AT A COST OF $300. SOMETIME LATER, THE CONSUMER RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL, REGARDING THE PROBLEM HE PREVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED. THE CONSUMER THEN SUBMITTED THE PAPERWORK FOR REIMBURSEMENT. HOWEVER, TOYOTA DENIED THE REQUEST, BASED ON THE FACT, THE CONSUMER DID NOT HAVE THE WORK PERFORMED AT AN AUTHORIZED TOYOTA DEALERSHIP SHOWING COMPLETION OF SSC A9E. THE CONSUMER THEN WENT TO AN AUTHORIZED TOYOTA DEALER TO HAVE THE RECALL PERFORMED. TOYOTA DENIED THE REIMBURSEMENT AGAIN, IN A LETTER WHICH STATED THE REPAIR THAT WAS PERFORMED DID NOT MEET THE CRITERIA FOR REIMBURSEMENT UNDER THE SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN SSC A9E. UPDATED 02/06/13.

ON 11/25/2012 AT ABOUT 10:00 PM, AFTER DRIVING ON FREEWAY FOR ABOUT 100 MILES, THE FRONT WHEEL ON DRIVER SIDE BEGAN TO MAKE A SMALL NOISE AND SMALL VIBRATION AND LATER THE TIRE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. I STOPPED BY AT A REST AREA AND DIDN?T SEE ANY NOTICEABLE PROBLEM. SINCE IT?S ABOUT 50 MILES AWAY FROM HOME, I DECIDED TO KEEP DRIVING IT AND THE NOISE AND VIBRATION CONTINUED. I CHECKED THE TIRE THE NEXT DAY AND FOUND IT FLATTENED. I FIXED IT WITH A TIRE REPAIR PLUG, PUMP IT AND I FOUND A BUBBLE ABOUT 4-INCH IN DIAMETER. I DROVE BACK TO VINELAND TOYOTA IN VINELAND, NJ ON 12/7/2012 SINCE THE TIRE WAS ONLY 18 MONTHS OLD AND WAS STILL IN WARRANTY. AFTER TAKING DOWN THE TIRE, I FOUND, ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TIRE, THERE WAS ANOTHER BUBBLE IN DIAMETER 3-INCH. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THERE IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL OF TIRES OF GOOD YEAR. IF I KEPT DRIVING MY VEHICLE FOR FEW MORE MILES, THE TIRE WOULD EXPLODE AND CAUSED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT! *TR

THE CONTACT CONTINUED TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL UNTIL THE VEHICLE RESPONDED AND CAME TO A STOP. THE FAILURE WAS INTERMITTENT AND RECURRED WHILE DRIVING AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTICS OR REPAIRS. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 125,000.

I WANT TO REPORT A SCARY INCIDENT OCCURRED YESTERDAY WITH MY MINIVAN. ON 2/11/2011, AT ABOUT 7 AM, I STARTED BY TOYOTA SIENNA TO SEND MY SON TO HIS HIGH SCHOOL, I HEARD STRANGE NOISE. IT SOUNDS LIKE NOT ALL THE CYLINDERS WERE RUNNUNG. THE CAR WAS NOT POWERFUL AS USUAL. I TRIED TO TURN OFF MY VAN, BY TURNING THE KEY TO STOP AND TAKING KEY OUT. THE CAN DID NOT STOP. I INSERTED THE KEY TO START AGAIN, IT STILL HAD THE NOISE. I DROVE MY SON TO HIS HIGH SCHOOL ANY, WHICH IS LESS THAN A MILE AWAY. AFTER DROPPING HIM OFF AT THE SCHOOL, I DROVE BACK TO HOME. WHEN I WAS CLOSE TO MY I SAW THE TEMPERATURE METER WAS MIDWAY. WHEN I GOT TO HOME, I STOPPED MY CAR IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE, TOOK THE KEY OUT. THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING. I OPENED THE HOOD, SAW SMOKE CAME OUT FROM THE ENGINE AREA. ALTHOUGH NO FLAME WAS STARTED, I USED MY HOUSE FIRE DISTINGUISHED TO PUT OUT THE SMOKE. THEN THE ENGINE STOPPED. ON OCTOBER 18, 2010 MY 2009 TOYOTA SIENNA DASHBOARD VSC (VARIABLE SKID CONTROL)/OFF TRACK AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. I TOOK MY VAN IN FOR SERVICE IMMEDIATELY. THE DEALERSHIP MADE REPAIRS THAT WERE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, AND ASSURED ME THAT THE VAN WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. ON NOVEMBER 24, 2010, THE SAME VSC/OFF TRACK AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS ILLUMINATED AGAIN. WHEN I RETURNED TO MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE, I WAS INFORMED THAT DUE TO THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY, THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT DID NOT HAVE AVAILABILITY UNTIL NOVEMBER 30, 2010. SERVICE ADVISOR ASSURED ME THAT MY VEHICLE WAS SAFE TO DRIVE, AS LONG AS I STAYED IN TOWN, AND WASN'T PLANNING ON TAKING THE CAR ON ANY LONG TRIPS. HOWEVER, I NEVER GOT A CHANCE TO RETURN MY VAN TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE ON NOVEMBER 29, 2010 IT STARTED TO MAKE UNUSUALLY LOUD NOISES AND ACCELERATED UNEXPECTEDLY. NATURALLY, I ATTEMPTED TO STOP BY BRAKING, BUT THE BRAKES WERE NOT FUNCTIONING AT ALL. I TRIED AGAIN AND AGAIN TO BRAKE, BUT TO MY DISAPPOINTMENT THE BRAKE PEDAL DID NOTHING, NO MATTER HOW MUCH I PUMPED IT. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO AVOID HITTING ANY PEDESTRIANS OR CARS BY STEERING UP THE CURB AND INTO A LAMPPOST. LOOSE SPARE TIRE IN CARGO SEATING AREA OF TOYOTA SIENNA 1999 VAN. DUE TO A RECALL ON THE CORROSION OF THE SPARE TIRE CABLE, THE SPARE TIRE WAS REMOVED AND PLACED IN THE CARGO AREA OF THE VAN. THE TIRE IS NOT SECURED DOWN AND MOVES AROUND DURING DRIVING. IF THERE WAS ANY TYPE OF ACCIDENT, ESPECIALLY A ROLL OVER, THE TIRE WITH THE RIM WOULD BE ABLE TO MOVE AROUND THE SEATING AREA AND COULD CAUSE SEVERE INJURIES. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. TWO SEAT BELTS IN MY 1999 TOYOTA SIENNA HAVE GOTTEN "JAMMED". IT HAPPENED SUDDENLY WITH EACH BELT, AND THEY BOTH JAMMED IN THE SAME MONTH. THEY ARE NOT USABLE BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT RETRACT FAR ENOUGH TO BUCKLE, AND ONE IS EVEN STUCK RETRACTED OUT. THERE IS NOTHING THAT I CAN THINK OF THAT WOULD HAVE CAUSED THIS TO HAPPEN. THEY ARE NOW PERMANENTLY JAMMED, AND I CANNOT FIND A WAY TO FIX IT. TOYOTA WANTS TO CHARGE $350 PER SEAT BELT AND I CANNOT AFFORD THAT, SO THE FAILURE HAS NOT BEEN CORRECTED. I HAVE OWNED MY 1999 SIENNA FOR 5 YEARS. TWO MONTHS AFTER PURCHASING MY REAR HATCH DOOR HANDLE SNAPPED. 3 YEARS LATER IT HAPPENED AGAIN. NOW, EVERY DOOR HANDLE ON THE VAN IS BROKE. NOW, THREE DAYS AGO, ANOTHER SLIDING DOOR HAS BROKEN. I HAVE NO MONEY TO REPLACE THIS HANDLES AND IT WILL RUN ABOUT 1,000 TO FIX ALL THREE. I AM WRITING IN REGARDS TO MY 1999 TOYOTA SIENNA XLE. WE HAVE HAD (AND LOVED) THIS CAR FOR ALL OF IT 134,000 MILES, BUT RECENTLY THE POWER SLIDING DOOR (ON THE PASSENGER SIDE) STOPPED WORKING. USING BRUTE FORCE, AN ADULT CAN MANUALLY PULL THE DOOR OPEN AND SHUT, BUT A CHILD CANNOT. MY LOCAL TOYOTA ADMITS THAT THIS IS A "DESIGN ISSUE" AND THAT HE'S SEEN "DOZENS" OF SUCH CASES, BUT THAT HAS NO BEARING ON THE FACT THAT IT COSTS UPWARDS OF $1600 TO MAKE THE FIX. THIS HARDLY SEEMS FAIR, REASONABLE OR SAFE. I AM THE FIRST OWNER OF THE 1999 TOYOTA SIENNA LE WITH WHICH HAS ONLY 61,000 MILES SO FAR. HOWEVER, IN THE EVENING OF TWO DAYS AGO, I STARTED IT AND COULDN'T STOP IT ANYMORE. ACTUAL REPAIR COST WAS $250 FOR A POORLY DESIGNED PART. MECHANIC TOLD ME THE DESIGN AND PLACEMENT OF THE HATCH HANDLE IS SUBJECT TO CONSTANT EXHAUST FUMES FROM THE REAR OF THE CAR, WEAKENING THE PLASTIC HANDLE. IN SPITE OF A FRONT IMPACT COLLISION THAT BUCKLED THE HOOD AND TOTALLED OUR VAN, THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY AND THE SEAT BELT DID NOT LOCK. THIS CAUSED MY DAUGHTER TO HIT HER HEAD ON THE STEERING WHEEL. MY CONCERN IS OVER THE FACT THAT THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. EVEN THOUGH THE VAN IS 8 YEARS OLD THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANOTHER ACCIDENT IN IT AND NO TAMPERING HAS BEEN DONE WITH THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. IT SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED AND I AM CONCERNED ABOUT DEFECT.

ELECTRICAL PROBLEM WITH FUSE #12 WHICH CONTROLS THE INTERIOR LIGHTS, CLOCK, AND REMOTE ACCESS-KEEPS BLOWING. ALSO THE DRIVER'S SEAT BELT WARNING LIGHT CONSTANTLY FLASHES EVEN WHEN THE BELT IS LATCHED. DRIVER'S VANITY LIGHT HAS DISLODGED FROM VISOR. *NM
