VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH FRONT COIL SPRINGS ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW YORK, NEW JERSEY, NEW HAMPSHIRE, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA, AND WISCONSIN, AND IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. THE FRONT COIL SPRINGS WERE PRODUCED WITH POOR PAINT QUALITY WHICH, AFTER CONTINUED EXPOSURE TO CORROSIVE SALT, CAN RESULT IN BREAKAGE OF THE SPRING.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL NOTIFIY CUSTOMERS TO BRING THEIR VEHICLE TO AN AUTHORIZE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE A SPRING GUARD INSTALLED ON BOTH FRONT STRUTS TO PREVENT TIRE PUNCTURE AND REPLACE ANY BROKEN SPRINGS FREE OF CHARGE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN SEPTEMBER 18, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT SUBARU AT 1-800-782-2783.

ON MARCH 19, 2013, I WAS RETURNING TO MY PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT AFTER PICKING UP MY OUTBACK FROM BLOOMINGTON ACURA SUBARU, BLOOMINGTON, MN AFTER A CLUTCH REPLACEMENT WHEN THE HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM HAD A TOTAL FAILURE RESULTING IN A NEAR CATASTROPHIC COLLISION WITH SEVERAL VEHICLES. THIS VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER FOR EVALUATION. DEALER INSPECTION CONFIRMED THAT THE RIGHT REAR BRAKE LINE BY THE FUEL TANK PROTECTOR HAD EXCESSIVE CORROSION RESULTING IN SEVERE FLUID RELEASE THUS NOT ALLOWING THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM TO PROPERLY PRESSURIZE RESULTING IN A COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE BRAKE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM. THE BRAKE LINES REPLACED WERE PART NUMBER 26522AA010 AND 26522AA020 (RIGHT AND LEFT). I WAS DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 90 IN IDAHO AT 62 MPH WHEN THE HOOD LATCH FAILED. THE HOOD WAS SECURED DOWN ALL THE WAY BEFORE THE INCIDENT AND HAD NOT BEEN OPENED IN TWO WEEKS. THERE HAD BEEN OVER 100 MILES OF HIGHWAY DRIVING OVER 60 MPH SINCE THE HOOD WAS LAST OPENED. THE HOOD FLEW UP WITH NO SAFETY CATCH OR HESITATION AND SLAMMED INTO THE WINDSHIELD. THE WINDSHIELD WAS SHATTERED, THE HOOD BENT AND THE ROOF DENTED. THE REAR VIEW MIRROR FLEW OFF INSIDE. I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THE PERSON FOLLOWING ME ON THE INTERSTATE PULLED OVER AND HELPED ME TIE IT DOWN TO BE ABLE TO LEAVE THE SCENE. WE BOTH DETERMINED IT WAS LATCH FAILURE. SOUNDED LIKE THERE WAS A POP IN MY FRONT CORNER. STILL DROVE OK UNDER 20-25 MPH. FASTER THAN THAT THE WHEEL SHOOK VIOLENTLY. BACKING UP THERE WAS A LOUD GRINDING NOISE. TOOK TO FRIENDS HOSE WHO WORKS ON CARS. HE SAID IT WAS MY FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE CONTROL ARM AND THE FRONT (HE CALLED IT HANDLING BUSHING) WAS RUSTED COMPLETELY IN TWO. HE FOUND A USED CONTROL ARM AT A JUNK YARD AND REPLACED IT FOR ME. I WENT TO THE BACK AND LOOKED UNDER THE RIGHT REAR AND TO MY SURPRISE THE FUEL FILLER NECK WAS LEAKING FUEL!! I PLACED A OIL CHANGE PAN UNDERNEATH AND TO THIS DAY I STILL HAVEN'T FIXED IT. DON'T KNOW WERE TO BEGIN WITH IT AND I'M THINKING IT'S A DESIGN FLAW SEEMS LIKE THERE IS HEAVY CORROSION ON THE VERY LOW PART OF THE FILLER PIPE AND THAT'S WERE IT'S LEAKING FROM. FUEL (GASOLINE) FILLER NECK FOR THE 1998 SUBARU LEGACY WAGON RUSTS OUT. MECHANIC INDICATED VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS YEAR MAKE AND MODEL. VERY POOR DESIGN BECAUSE THE TUBE IS BEHIND A PLASTIC MOLDING THAT ACCUMULATES DIRT, SALT, WATER, AND ROTS THE TUBING CAUSING A CHRONIC LEAK OF GASOLINE POTENTIALLY OVER THE EXHAUST SYSTEM. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN ANY TYPE OF GMC VEHICLE WAS PARKED NEXT TO HIS VEHICLE THE AUTOMATIC DOOR LOCKS AND ALARM SYSTEM WOULD ENGAGE WHEN THE OTHER VEHICLES KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM WAS ACTIVATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO RECOMMENDED THAT THE VEHICLE BE TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER TO BE REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 160,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

1998 SUBARU LEGACY OUTBACK WAGON AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION 86,000 MILES. PURCHASED USED MANY YEARS AGO WITH ABOUT 10,000 MILES. MY SISTER'S CAR, SHE WAS DRIVING ALONE. EXPERIENCED DRIVER. ABOUT TWO MONTHS AGO SHE CAME AROUND A CORNER ON A 30 MPH ROAD NEAR HER HOME. LIGHT SNOW ON THE GROUND (AMHERST, MASSACHUSETTS) SHE COULD NOT CONTROL THE CAR, AND IT SLID AROUND. SHE PHONED ME AND WAS VERY UPSET AT LOSING CONTROL. COMMENTED THAT THE CAR HAD NOT FELT QUITE RIGHT. I SUGGESTED LOOSE LUG NUTS, BADLY INFLATED (ALMOST NEW) TIRES, BENT RIM, DEFECTIVE TIRE, ALIGNMENT. ALL CHECKED OUT FINE. THEN I MENTIONED SUSPENSION. SHE TOOK IT TO HER MECHANIC WHO REPLACED BOTH REAR STRUTS. CAR STILL UNPREDICTABLE. RETURNED TO MECHANIC WHO THEN TEST DROVE CAR AND DECIDED THAT IT WAS A PROBLEM SIMILAR TO THAT OF HIS PARENTS' SIMILAR CAR: POWER WAS NOT BEING PROPORTIONED PROPERLY TO THE FOUR WHEELS. HE REPLACED EXISTING TRANSMISSION / TRANSAXLE / DIFFERENTIAL LUBRICANT WITH SOME MORE SPECIALIZED LUBRICANT. (AMALIE AMA 1607881297 DEXTRON LLL ATF) AT THIS TIME MY SISTER IS TRYING THIS OUT TO SEE IF IT DOES THE TRICK. SINCE THIS DEFECT AFFECTS THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE I THOUGHT THAT YOU SHOULD KNOW. I DROVE OLDER 4WD AUDIS, OWNED MILITARY 4WD TRUCKS, AND CARS WITH LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIALS. I WAS ALWAYS AWARE OF THE NEED FOR SPECIFIC LUBRICANTS. I DO NOT THINK THAT THE AVERAGE CAR OWNER SHOULD BE. WAS THERE A SECRET ADVISORY OR RECALL?

THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED IN 2003, BUT GIVEN THE CONTINUATION OF COMPLAINTS FROM CURRENT SUBARU OWNERS EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM, IT SEEMS HIGHLY NEGLIGENT OF SUBARU TO DENY RESPONSIBILITY FOR ADDRESSING THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM ON SUBARU'S DATING FROM 1997 FORWARD. REPAIR COST IN EXCESS OF $2,500. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 SUBARU OUTBACK. SINCE OCTOBER OF 2007, THE CONTACT SMELLED FUEL INSIDE THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSIS AND THEY STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO THE FUEL METAL NOSE. THE NOSE CORRODED AND CAUSED FUEL TO LEAK. THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE NOSE METAL AT THE COST OF $278. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY; THEREFORE, THEY WOULD NOT ASSIST WITH THE REPAIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 122,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 124,000.

I LOOKED ONLINE AND THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF OWNERS ON A MULTITUDE OF SITES WHO ARE EXPERIENCING OR HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS EXACT PROBLEM. CLEARLY THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE VEHICLE AND NOT ANY OWNER'S OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE, AND THEREFORE THE CORPORATION WHO HAS CAUSED ITS CUSTOMERS EXPENSE SHOULD BEAR THE BURDEN FINANCIALLY FOR FIXING THIS PROBLEM. *TR

WE BOUGHT A 1998 SUBARU OUTBACK IN 2004. AT APPROXIMATELY 110,000 MILES, WE EXPERIENCED A CATASTROPHIC OVERHEATING OF THE ENGINE DUE TO A FAULTY HEAD GASKET. THE OVERHEATING CAUSED APPROXIMATELY $3,000 WORTH OF DAMAGE TO THE CAR. THE HEAD GASKET, RADIATOR, THERMOSTAT, WATER PUMP, OXYGEN SENSORS AND (2) CATALYTIC CONVERTERS ALL HAD TO BE REPLACED. WE HAVE SINCE LEARNED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR SUBARUS OF THIS VINTAGE. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF ANECDOTAL REPORTS OF PEOPLE HAVING THIS EXACT PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET, AND OUR MECHANIC TELLS US HE FIXES AT LEAST ONE OF THESE PROBLEMS PER WEEK AT HIS SHOP. IN FACT, THEY SAID THAT THERE WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM WHERE A BATTERY CHANGE COULD CAUSE A ''FALSE POSITIVE'' WARNING ABOUT THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. CONSIDERING THAT THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM THAT SUBARU IS AWARE OF, AND HAS NOT NOTIFIED CUSTOMERS OF, I AM REQUESTING A REFUND BY SUBARU FOR THE FULL $130. I HAVE TWO CONCERNS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM: 1. DRIVING A 1998 SUBARU AWD LEGACY OUTBACK. ON JUNE 6, 2006 WHILE ON A SHORT TRIP IN VEHICLE, RETURNED HOME TO SEE SMOKE (NOT STEAM) COMING FROM ENGINE BLOCK. THE VEHICLE HAD OVERHEATED, AND HAD BEEN SUFFERING OCCASIONAL LOSS OF POWER WHILE DRIVING PRIOR TO THIS TIME (APPROX 1 WEEK). DROVE APPROX .5 MI TO DEALER NEXT DAY TO GET CHECKED OUT ALONG WITH 90,000 MILE SERVICE (MILEAGE ON VEHICLE WAS 91,058). DEALER CALLED TO INFORM THAT HE HAD FOUND LEAKING HEAD GASKETS WITH LEAKS AT THE VALVE COVERS AND HYDROCARBONS IN THE COOLING SYSTEM. INFORMED THAT HEAD GASKET WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AND THE HEAD RESURFACED (POTENTIAL REPLACEMENT OF BLOCK BUT THIS WAS NOT NEEDED NOR WAS A VALVE JOB) AND THAT WE SHOULD ALSO REPLACE WATER PUMP, TIMING BELT, AND ENGINE SHIELD AS LONG AS THE ENGINE IS OUT. MY RESEARCH ON THE WEB INDICATES THAT THIS PROBLEM IS EPIDEMIC, LOCAL MECHANICS I'VE SPOKEN WITH SAY THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE AND THAT SUBARU AMERICA WILL NOT STEP UP TO THE PLATE. I CALLED SUBARU, WITH MY COMPLAINT AND WHILE ADMITTING NO RESPONSIBILITY OFFERED $500 CREDIT TOWARD REPAIRS WHICH EVENTUALLY CAME TO MORE THAN $3000. REPLACED PARTS INCLUDE HEAD GASKET, HEAD RESURFACING, SEALS, WATER PUMP, HOSES, THERMOSTAT, TIMING BELT AND TENSIONER, SEPARATOR PLATE. WHEN I CALLED AGAIN TO ASK THEM TO STEP UP ON THIS ISSUE THEY FAILED TO OFFER ADDITIONAL HELP. AS I UNDERSTAND IT A BLOWN HEAD GASKET CAN LEAD TO A CRACKED ENGINE BLOCK WHICH COULD INDEED LEAD TO A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM. MY CHILD CARE PROVIDER WAS INVOLVED IN A SINGLE CAR ACCIDENT. SHE WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH IN WET/RAINY CONDITIONS WHEN SHE LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR AND HIT A TREE. THIS IMPACT CAUSED THE CAR TO SPIN AND HIT A SECOND TREE. THE CAR WAS TOTALED AND SUSTAINED DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END, THE PASSENGER DOOR AND THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR. 1998 SUBARU OUTBACK - STEERING BECOMES JERKY WHEN BACKING OR GOING FORWARD AT SLOW SPEEDS AND WHILE MAKING TIGHT TURNING RADIUSES. LOCAL REPAIR SHOP CALLED A LOCAL SUBARU DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT THEY HAVE SEEN SOME INCIDENTS OF THIS PROBLEM BUT KNOW OF NO FIX. IT WAS SAID THAT THE VEHICLE IS SAFE TO DRIVE. THE SUSPECTED PROBLEM IS THOUGHT DUE TO UNEVEN REGULATION OF THE WHEEL SPEED IN THE ALL WHEEL DRIVE REGULATOR AS ONE TURNS SHARPLY. IN A SHARP TURN THE WHEELS ON THE INNER CURVE OF THE TRAVEL OF PATH NEED TO TRAVEL AT A SLOWER RPM THAN THE WHEELS OF THAT ARE ON THE OUTER CURVE OF THE PATH OF THE VEHICLE. THIS JERKY MOTION EVEN IF NOT UNSAFE DEVALUES THE CAR FOR ANY POSSIBLE RESALE VALUE THUS COMPROMISING MY INVESTMENT IN IT. THE JERKY MOTION OF THE WHEELS WHEN TURNING AS IN PARKING OR BACKING OUT OF THE PARKING STALL IS NOTICEABLE AND SOMEWHAT DISCONCERTING TO THE POINT OF MY THINKING THAT IT MAY BE LESS SAFE THAN I A CURRENTLY LED TO BELIEVE BY THE CAR REPAIR SHOP AND THE LOCAL SUBARU DEALER THAT ADVISED. LATE ON THE NIGHT OF 09/01/05 MY WIFE, HER SON, DAUGHTER AND TWO (2) GRAND CHILDREN WERE TRAVELING TO OMAHA, NE FOR THE LONG LABOR DAY WEEKEND IN A 1998 SUBARU LEGACY OUTBACK WAGON WITH 123,000 MILES. THEY GOT AS FAR AS THE OUTSKIRTS OF KEARNEY, NE WHEN THEY NOTICED A LOSS OF POWER AND SAW HEAVY SMOKE/STEAM COMING FROM THE TAIL PIPE OF THE CAR. THEY IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND WERE ASSISTED BY A NE STATE TROOPER. $600 LATER THE CAR, WHICH APPARENTLY SUFFERED FROM HEAD GASKET FAILURE, WAS FINALLY TOWED TO THE DUTEAU SUBARU DEALERSHIP IN LINCOLN, NE. THEY VERIFIED THE HEAD GASKET FAILURE AND THAT THE ENGINE SEIZED. SUBARU USA WAS NOTIFIED AND ASKED IF THEY WOULD COVER ANY OF THE DAMAGE, WHICH AS IT TURNS OUT INCLUDES A NEW/REBUILT ENGINE. THE RESPONSE WAS IT'S NOT UNDER WARRANTY, YOU DIDN'T PURCHASE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY AND "WE ARE SORRY FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE THAT THIS HAS CAUSED YOUR FAMILY." I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP FROM WHICH THE CAR WAS PURCHASED, NAMELY BURT SUBARU. I WAS TOLD THAT HEAD GASKET FAILURE WAS A FREQUENT PROBLEM WITH 1998, 1999 AND 2000 SUBARU LEGACY OUTBACK WAGONS. IF THIS WAS SUCH A PROBLEM, WHY DID SUBARU FAIL TO ISSUE A RECALL TO FIX THE DEFECTIVE GASKET? CYLINDER #4 EXHAUST VALE FAILURE IN JULY OF 2004. SUBARU DEALER PRESTIGE IMPORTS PULLED HEAD AND REPLACED VALVE. THEY INSISTED THE CAUSE WAS "BAD GASOLINE." APRIL 2005 CAR IS FOUND TO HAVE HIGH LEVEL OF CO2 IN COOLING SYSTEM. SUBARU DEALER PRESTIGE IMPORTS REFUSES TO DO A LEAK DOWN TEST TO DETERMINE WHICH HEAD GASKET HAS FAILED. PULLS BOTH HEADS AT A COST OF CLOSE TO $3,000. REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THEY REMOVED THE HEAD IN JULY 2004 TO REPLACE THE VALVE AND REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS MAY HAVE BEEN THE CAUSE OF THE JULY 2005 FAILURE. SUBARU USA HAS BEEN EXTREMELY UNHELPFUL AND CLAIMS THAT THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH AUTHORIZED DEALER REPAIRS OR ISSUES WITH HEAD GASKETS ON 2.5 L TYPE 1 ENGINES. THIS IS AN VERY COMMON PROBLEM APPARENTLY. ALMOST EVERY AUTO MECHANIC IN AMERICA IS FAMILIAR WITH IT. ON THE NHTSA COMPLAIN SITE I COUNTED AT LEAST 18 HEAD GASKET RELATED COMPLAINTS. THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILED WITH JUST 61,000 EASY MILES. THE FAILURE WAS IN THE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY (IT WOULD NOT DECELERATE WHEN TAKING PRESSURE OFF THE GAS PEDAL). I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THE MANAGER TOLD ME THAT THE DRIVE TRAIN WAS TECHNICALLY OUT OF WARRANTY AND THAT I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION. (BEFORE 60,000 I HAD THE DEALER CHECK OUT THE WHOLE CAR AND THEY COULD FIND NOTHING. WHEN THE TRANSMISSION FAILED I TOOK IT IN AGAIN AND THE MECHANIC TOLD ME "NOTHING IS WRONG"... I AM NOT KIDDING; THEY WERE NOT COMPETENT ENOUGH TO KNOW THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS NOT PERFORMING PROPERLY!!). AFTER THAT EXPERIENCE THERE WAS NO WAY I WAS GOING TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION WITH ANOTHER SUBARU PRODUCT. I TOOK IT TO AAMCO FOR A REBUILD. THE MECHANIC THERE TOLD ME THAT THE FACTORY SETTINGS FOR THE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY WERE SET AT 50 THOUSANDTHS AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN SET AT 15 THOUSANDTHS OR LESS. IN OTHER WORDS, THE FACTORY BUILT THE TRANSMISSION TO SELF-DESTRUCT. WHEN I APPROACHED TAKAO SAITO, PRESIDENT OF SUBARU ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, HE HAD LINDA FOUCH CONTACT ME BY TELEPHONE. SHE PROMISED TO HELP OUT WITH THE REPAIR BILL BECAUSE THE FAILURE WAS SO CLOSE TO THE WARRANTY. WHEN SHE DISCOVERED THAT I WAS NOT INTERESTED IN LITIGATON, SHE PROMPTLY FORGOT HER PROMISE AND FAILED TO RESPOND TO ANY FURTHER CORRESPONDENCE! IF SUBARU IS TO KEEP ITS LOYAL CUSTOMER BASE, IT NEEDS TO AGGRESSIVELY ADDRESS THE PROBLEM OF QUALITY CONTROL AND MEND THE BAD EXPERIENCES OF ITS PATRONAGE.

LEGACY OUTBACK WITH 2.5 L ENGINE BEGAN TO OVERHEAT WITH COOLANT BOILING OVER INTO RESEVOIR. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO REPAIR SHOP. THEY REPLACED THERMOSTAT, TESTED FOR HYDROCARBONS IN SYSTEM, PRESSURED TESTED CAP AND SYSTEM AND FLUSHED RADIATOR. CAR STILL OVERHEATED AND WAS RETURNED TO REPAIR SHOP AND TESTED FOR HYDROCARBONS IN THE ANTIFREEZE WITH NEGATIVE RESULTS. NO PROBLEM WAS IDENTIFIED. ENGINE CONTINUED TO OVERHEAT AND WAS TAKEN INTO REPAIR SHOP WHILE THE POINTER WAS OFF THE TOP OF THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE. THIS TIME HYDROCARBONS WERE IDENTIFIED IN THE COOLANT AND PROBLEM WAS IDENTIFIED AS A BLOWN GASKET. MANAGER REPORTED THAT THE WEEK BEFORE ANOTHER SUBARU OWNER HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH SAME DIFFICULTY IN IDENTIFYING THE CAUSE. REPAIRS COST $1,400. HAD A SIMILIAR REPORT FOR ANOTHER SUBARU OWNER BUT WORK WAS DONE WITH PRESSURE ON DEALER AFTER INITIAL REFUSAL.*AK

ENGINE OVERHEATING STARTED 10 MONTHS AGO ON LONG TRIPS ONLY. OVERHEATING WAS COMMON WHEN ENGINE WAS UNDER HEAVIER THAN NORMAL LOADS FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME(CLIMBING HILSS, ETC.). FLUID IN RADIATOR WAS EVENTUALLY DEPLENTED LEADING TO SHARP RISE IN ENGINE TEMPERATURE. LATELY THIS HAS BEEN WORSE AS ONLY 30 MILES OF NORMAL DRIVING WILL CAUSE THE SAME SYMPTOMS. THE FAULT TURNED OUT TO BE A HEAD GASKET FAILURE ON SUBARU R2.5L TYPE 1 ENGINES. THE COOLANT WAS BEING FORCED OUT OF THE RADIATOR BY THE SLOW LEAK OF EXHAUST GASES IN THE COOLANT AROUND THE RADIATOR. THIS VECHICLE HAS BEEN SERVICED SINCE NEW BY ONLY THE LOCAL SUBARU DEALER. A SEARCH ON THE INTERNET FOR SUBARU 2.5L ENGINES 1996-1999 (LEGACY) TURNED UP MULTIPLE HITS FOR OWNERS WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM. FAILURE IS AS LOW AS 40K MILES TO OVER 100K FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS MULTI-LAYER GASKET FOR THE TYPE 1 ENGINE HAS BE REDESIGNED 6 TIMES, LEADING ONE TO SURMISE THAT THE HEAD GASKETS ARE DEFECTIVE. THE TYPE2 ENGINE ALSO HAS THIS FAILURE BUT THIS HAS BEEN INTERCEPTED BY SUBARU OF AMERICA BY ADDING A "LUBRICANT" TO THE COOLANT, IE: BLOCK SEALER. THIS ENGINE SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED TO REPLACE THE MULTIPLE DEFECTS WHICH SUBARU WILL ONLY DO ON TYPE 2 ENGINES AND ONLY IF THE OWNER KNOWS TO ASK FOR THE "SECRET WARANTY". TOOK MY SUBARU TO DEALER FOR 60,000 MILE CHECK. HE ADVISED ME THAT MY HEAD GASKET WAS ABOUT TO FAIL AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT. HE ALSO INFORMED ME THAT FAILURE OF THE HEAD GASKET IN 1998 OUTBACKS WAS COMMON. THIS REPAIR IS VERY COSTLY (ABOUT $1500), AND FAILING TO MAKE IT COULD CAUSE CATASTROPHIC DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE.*AK

COMPLAINT RECEIVED VIA E-MAIL. THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE WAS IN THE HOT RANGE WHILE DRIVING. THE COOLING SYSTEM CHECKED OUT OKAY, BUT WAS TOLD THAT THE CAR WAS LOW ON COOLANT. THE CONSUMER REFILLED COOLANT, WENT OUT OF COUNTRY, AND 2 WEEKS LATER ENCOUNTERED THE SAME PROBLEM. A MONTH LATER, WHILE DRIVING, COOLANT LEAKED OUT AGAIN, AND THE HEAD GASKET WAS BAD. THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES. *AK *SC *JB

ON OCTOBER 6, 2004, I WAS COASTING INTO A PARKING SPACE IN MY 1998 SUBARU LEGACY OUTBACK. MY HEADLIGHTS WERE FACING A CURB, SIDEWALK, AND CEMENT BRICK BUILDING, AND I TOUCHED THE BRAKES TO PREVENT BUMPING THE CURB. AS SOON AS MY FOOT HIT THE BRAKE, THE CAR VROOMED AS IF THE THROTTLE HAD BEEN FULLY OPENED, AND THE CAR CONTINUED MOVING FORWARD. I PRESSED THE BRAKE HARDER, BUT THE CAR SEEMED TO TAKE OFF ON IT'S OWN AND WAS TOTALLY OUT OF MY CONTROL. THE ALL-WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE EASILY BUMPED UP THE CURB, AND THE CAR FLEW INTO THE AIR AND CRASHED INTO THE SIDE OF THE BUILDING. THE CAR WAS TOTALED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. FORTUNATELY, I WAS WEARING MY SEAT BELT (THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY). THE ENTIRE INCIDENT HAPPENED VERY FAST AND WAS TOTALLY UNEXPECTED. ALTHOUGH I AM THANKFUL THAT THERE WAS NO PEDESTRIAN WALKING ON THE SIDEWALK WHEN IT HAPPENED AND THAT I AM ALIVE TO BE WRITING THIS, I AM CONVINCED THAT THIS WAS A CAR MALFUNCTION THAT SHOULD BE CORRECTED IN THIS VEHICLE.*AK
