CERTAIN FEDERAL-MOGUL REPLACEMENT WHEEL HUB ASSEMBLIES WITH THE BRAND NAMES: NATIONAL, CARQUEST P/NOS. 515020, 515021, 515025, 515053, 515054, 515059, AND 515060, SHIPPED BETWEEN JANUARY 23, 2006, AND DECEMBER 20, 2007, SOLD FOR LIGHT DUTY AND MEDIUM DUTY TRUCKS. THE INBOARD RETENTION NUT USED TO MAINTAIN HUB BEARING ASSEMBLY CAN LOOSEN RESULTING IN AN ABS LIGHT INDICATION, NOISE, AND/OR WHEEL SEPARATION.
Remedy: FEDERAL-MOGUL WILL NOTIFY CUSTOMERS AND WILL REPLACE THE HUB ASSEMBLY FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 7, 2008. OWNERS CAN CONTACT FEDERAL-MOGUL TOLL-FREE AT 877-489-6659.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ABS AND BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE BRAKE LINE DISINTEGRATED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 250,000.

IN AUG 2005, THE ABS LIGHT ON OUR 2001 GMC YUKON WITH 51K MILES CAME ON AND THERE WAS A GRINDING NOISE (THE PUMP) UNDERNEATH THE DRIVER'S SIDE WHICH REMAINS ON WHEN THE VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF. THE ABS FUSE MUST BE REMOVED TO SHUT OFF THE PUMP. OUR LOCAL GMC DEALERSHIP REPAIRED IT FOR $1100 ($870 FOR THE ABS MODULE). IN SEP 2009, THE ABS FAILED AGAIN AT 91K MILES. OUR GMC DEALERSHIP HELPED COVER THE COST OF REPAIR BY COVERING THE COST OF THE MODULE. WE HAD TO WAIT 2 MONTHS (NOV 2009) BEFORE THE VEHICLE COULD BE REPAIRED BECAUSE WE WERE TOLD THAT THE MODULE WAS BEING REDESIGNED TO FIX THESE PROBLEMS. IN OCT 2014, THE ABS FAILED AGAIN AT 138K MILES. OUR GMC DEALERSHIP PUT US IN CONTACT WITH GMC CUSTOMER SERVICE WITH THE HOPE THAT GMC COULD ASSIST IN COVERING THE COST OF REPAIR. AFTER SEVERAL FRUSTRATING PHONE CALLS WITH SUPERVISORS, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TOO OLD AND THEREFORE GMC WOULD NOT ASSIST. DURING THESE PHONE CALLS GMC STATED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE VEHICLE IN "SALT-BELT" STATES BUT NOT CALIFORNIA. OBVIOUSLY THE ABS MODULE IS DEFECTIVE AS A RELATIVE WITH A SIMILAR VEHICLE (CHEVY TAHOE) HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE ABS MODULE. IN SEARCHING THE INTERNET, WE FOUND A COMPANY THAT STATES THAT THEY CAN REPAIR THE MODULE FOR UNDER $100 AND GUARANTEES THE REPAIR FOR LIFE. IF THEY CAN DO THIS, WHY CAN'T GM MAKE THE NECESSARY CHANGES TO THE ABS MODULE AND GIVE CUSTOMERS THE PEACE OF MIND THAT THE VEHICLE WILL BE SAFE. HOPEFULLY THE NHTSA WILL USE THIS AND SIMILAR COMPLAINTS AND FORCE GM TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THE ABS MODULE. *TR

OUR GMC DEALERSHIP HELPED COVER THE COST OF REPAIR BY COVERING THE COST OF THE MODULE. WE HAD TO WAIT 2 MONTHS (NOV 2009) BEFORE THE VEHICLE COULD BE REPAIRED BECAUSE WE WERE TOLD THAT THE MODULE WAS BEING REDESIGNED TO FIX THESE PROBLEMS. IN OCT 2014, THE ABS FAILED AGAIN AT 138K MILES. OUR GMC DEALERSHIP PUT US IN CONTACT WITH GMC CUSTOMER SERVICE WITH THE HOPE THAT GMC COULD ASSIST IN COVERING THE COST OF REPAIR. AFTER SEVERAL FRUSTRATING PHONE CALLS WITH SUPERVISORS, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TOO OLD AND THEREFORE GMC WOULD NOT ASSIST. DURING THESE PHONE CALLS GMC STATED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE VEHICLE IN "SALT-BELT" STATES BUT NOT CALIFORNIA. OBVIOUSLY THE ABS MODULE IS DEFECTIVE AS A RELATIVE WITH A SIMILAR VEHICLE (CHEVY TAHOE) HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE ABS MODULE. IN SEARCHING THE INTERNET, WE FOUND A COMPANY THAT STATES THAT THEY CAN REPAIR THE MODULE FOR UNDER $100 AND GUARANTEES THE REPAIR FOR LIFE. IF THEY CAN DO THIS, WHY CAN'T GM MAKE THE NECESSARY CHANGES TO THE ABS MODULE AND GIVE CUSTOMERS THE PEACE OF MIND THAT THE VEHICLE WILL BE SAFE. HOPEFULLY THE NHTSA WILL USE THIS AND SIMILAR COMPLAINTS AND FORCE GM TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THE ABS MODULE. *TR

BRAKES WERE WEAK, ALMOST TO FLOOR SO THE CAR WAS TOWED HOME. WHILE SLOWLY BACKING THE CAR INTO DRIVEWAY THE BRAKES FAILED COMPLETELY. STEPPED ON EMERGENCY BRAKE AND INTERMEDIATE CABLE BROKE. THE E-BRAKE CABLE FAILED BECAUSE OF RUST AND THE BRAKE LINES TO THE EBCM WHERE THEY GO OVER FRAME ALL FAILED. THE ONLY PART ON THIS CAR THAT HAS RUSTED BEYOND ANYTHING NORMAL ARE THE BRAKE LINES. UNBELIEVABLY RUSTED! WHEN THE BRAKES (E-BRAKE AND BOTH LINES) ALL FAILED THE CAR ROLLED OUT OF CONTROLLED INTO A TREE. THE REAR HATCH GLASS SHATTERED AND I HAD A SORE NECK FOR 5-DAYS. THIS IS APPARENTLY A COMMON PROBLEM TO THIS CAR WHERE SALT IS USED. THE BRAKES STARTED TO GO WEAK (1-LINE MUST HAVE FAILED) AS MY WIFE APPROACHED A TOLL BOOTH, ONLY LUCK PREVENTED A CATASTROPHIC EVENT FROM HAPPENING. I CAN'T BELIEVE WE WERE NOT NOTIFIED OR THE CAR WAS NOT RECALLED! GM AND THE NHTSA SHAME ON YOU. YOU KNEW OF A SAFETY PROBLEM AND HAVE DONE NOTHING. GM STATING THAT YOU WILL STILL HAVE BRAKES IF THE LINE FAILS IS A WEAK ARGUMENT, YOU HAVE TO PRESS MUCH HARDER AFTER THE FIRST LINE GOES AND THE OTHER LINE IS READY TO FAIL. I WAS TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH WHEN THE CAR IN FRONT BRAKED SUDDENLY. I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL QUICKLY AND FIRMLY TO SLOW THE VEHICLE, AND THE BRAKES WORKED NORMALLY. WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKES TO STOP AT AN INTERSECTION, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR ON MY 2001 YUKON. A SEVERELY CORRODED BRAKE LINE LEADING TO PASSENGER SIDE FRONT BRAKE FAILED. POINT OF FAILURE WAS AT THE CENTER OF THE VEHICLE UNDER THE RADIATOR. DURING REMOVAL OF THE FAILED LINE FROM IT'S MOUNTING CLIP ON THE VEHICLE FRAME THE BRAKE LINE LEADING TO THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT BRAKE WAS BUMPED CAUSING IT TO BREAK AS WELL. I WAS DRIVING MY YUKON IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC WHEN I FOUND IT NECESSARY TO ATTEMPT A PANIC STOP. I PRESSED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND FELT SOMTHING GIVE WAY AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. DOWN SHIFTED TRANSMISSION TO SLOW DOWN AND PRESSED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO COME TO A STOP. PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, LIFTED THE HOOD NO BRAKE FLUID IN REAR SECTION OF MASTER CYLINDER. NOTICED BRAKE FLUID DRIPPING UNDER THE FRONT OF THE DRIVERS DOOR ON THE GROUND. HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED HOME AND LOOKED UNDER THE VEHICLE AND THE BRAKE LINE WAS DRIPPING FLUID. THE BRAKE LINES ARE COMPLETELY RUSTED AND THE FRAME IS REALLY RUSTED. JUST GOT THE VEHICLE OUT OF THE GMC SHOP FOR ROUTINE SERVICE. CAN'T FIGURE WHY THEY DIDN'T NOTICE OR AT LEAST TELL ME THAT I MIGHT HAVE A PROBLEM.I CALLED THEM AND ADVISE WHAT ISSUE I WAS HAVING. THEY ADVISED THAT GM WOULD NOT COVE THE ISSUE AND 1300.00 WOULD MAYBE COVER THE LINE REPLACEMENT PLUS. I AM NOT HAPPY. DRIVING VEHICLE AT APPROX 45MPH, CAME TO STOP AT RED LIGHT AND BRAKE PEDAL WENT COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR. PUMPED THE BRAKE PEDAL AGAIN AND NOTHING. BRAKE SYSTEM FAILED WHILE DRIVING. BRAKE PEDAL IMMEDIATELY WENT TO THE FLOOR WHILE DRIVING AT ABOUT 35 MPH. PUMPED BRAKES TO GET SLOWED DOWN AND EVENTUALLY STOPPED. EXITED VEHICLE ON DRIVERS SIDE DOOR AND FOUND FLUID PUDDLE UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. UPON PUMPING THE BRAKES WHILE STOPPED, I NOTICED BRAKE FLUID SQUIRTING OUT UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR. AFTER TOWING THE VEHICLE HOME, I HAVE CONFIRMED A SEVERELY CORRODED METAL BRAKE LINE HAS RUSTED THROUGH AND BROKEN OPEN. *TR

GM MECHANIC EXPERIENCED BRAKE LINE FAILURE OF REAR LINE DURING A STATE INSPECTION, AFTER REAR LINE WAS REPAIRED, FRONT BRAKE LINES FAILED ON THE GM MECHANIC DURING A TEST DRIVE AT HIGHWAY SPEED. ALL BRAKE LINES WERE DETERMINED IN IMMEDIATE NEED OF REPLACEMENT AS WELL AS FRONT CALIBERS.. *TR

I HEARD A SLIGHT GRINDING NOISE, THAT SOUNDED LIKE A BRAKE DRAGGING. I REPLACED BRAKES ALL THE WAY AROUND, AND THAT DIDN'T STOP THE NOISE. I THEN REPLACED ALL THE WHEEL BEARINGS, THIS DID NOT HELP EITHER. I TRIED THE U-JOINTS WITH NO LUCK. I WAS TALKING TO THE PERSON THAT I GOT THE VEHICLE FROM AND WAS TOLD THAT THE REAR END HAD BEEN REBUILT TWICE! THIS WAS BEFORE I GOT THE VEHICLE, AND IT ONLY HAD 67000 ON IT WHEN I GOT IT. I APPLIED THE BRAKES ON MY VEHICLE IN THE DRIVEWAY AND FELT A POP AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I PUMPED THE PEDAL A FEW TIMES AND IT WENT TO THE FLOOR EACH TIME. I LOOKED AROUND THE VEHICLE AND THERE WAS A PUDDLE OF BRAKE FLUID UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR DOOR. I FELT AROUND THE FRAME WHERE THE LEAK WAS AND FELT A VERY CORRODED BRAKE LINE. I SEARCHED ONLINE AND FOUND THAT MANY GM TRUCK OWNERS HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM AND THERE IS AN NHTSA INVESTIGATION AND ENGINEERING ANALYSIS. I'D LIKE TO KNOW IF GM IS GOING TO RECALL THESE TRUCKS FOR THIS ISSUE. *TR

SLOW SPEED STOP APPROACHING A LOCKED GATE. BRAKE PEDAL WAS APPLIED. PEDAL DROPPED TO THE FLOOR WITH COMPLETE LOSS OF BRAKE PRESSURE. BRAKE PEDAL WAS PUMPED TWICE WITH THE FINAL APPLICATION LOCKING ONE REAR WHEEL. THE ABOVE VEHICLE STOPPED WITHIN 2 FEET OF STRIKING A METAL SECURITY GATE. BRAKE FLUID WAS OBSERVED DRIPPING FROM UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE COMPARTMENT ON TO THE GROUND. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO MY MECHANIC. MECHANIC FOUND THAT THERE WAS EXCESSIVE RUST ON ALL METAL BRAKE TUBING. ONE OF THE METAL BRAKE LINES FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER TO THE ABS PUMP COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH CAUSING LOSS OF ALL BRAKE PRESSURE AND BRAKE FAILURE. ALL METAL BRAKE LINES HAD TO BE REPLACED. BEFORE AND AFTER THE INCIDENT THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATOR LIGHTS THAT WERE ACTIVATED ON THE DASH. *TT
