WHEN THE HITCH IS LOADED TO THE MAXIMUM RATING, THE HITCH MAY FRACTURE OR BREAK AT THE BEND LOCATION WHERE THE MAIN BODY OF THE HITCH MEETS THE HITCH MUFFLER STRAP.

WHILE REPLACING REAR BRAKE DRUMS IN MY GARAGE, IT BECAME NECESSARY TO JACK THE VEHICLE TO RAISE THE REAR LEFT SIDE AND REMOVE THE REAR LEFT WHEEL. I BROKE THE LUG NUTS LOOSE WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS ON THE GROUND, THEN, USING THE JACK SUPPLIED WITH THE VEHICLE, I FOLLOWED THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL TO POSITION THE JACK IN THE RECOMMENDED LOCATION TOWARD THE LEFT REAR AT THE IDENTIFIED JACKING LOCATION. I RAISED THE VEHICLE JUST ENOUGH TO REMOVE THE WHEEL. AS I WAS SPINNING THE LUG NUTS OFF, THE CAR FELL OFF THE JACK. THIS OCCURRED BECAUSE RUST HAD COMPROMISED THE STRUCTURAL METAL AT THE JACKING LOCATION AND THE WEIGHT, WHILE THE CAR WAS BEING RAISED, CRUSHED THE WEAKENED STEEL. FORTUNATELY, I WAS NOT TOO CLOSE AND WAS NOT CAUGHT UNDER THE WHEEL OR OTHER BODY PART. UPON CLOSE INSPECTION IT BECAME APPARENT THAT THE STRUCTURE OF THE CAR, AT THE RECOMMENDED JACKING LOCATION, HAD BEEN SEVERELY COMPROMISED BY RUST. THE EXTENT OF THE RUST DAMAGE WAS NOT OBVIOUS UNTIL THE CAR FELL OFF THE JACK. AT THAT POINT THE PAINT WHICH HAD BEEN HIDING THE DAMAGE HAD FALLEN OFF AS THE STRUCTURAL STEEL UNDER IT COLLAPSED UNDER THE WEIGHT OF THE CAR. THERE IS ALSO A RUBBER PAD THAT CONTRIBUTED TO CONCEALMENT OF THE STRUCTURAL DAMAGE SINCE IT COVERED MOST OF THE DAMAGED AREA SURROUNDING THE STUD USED TO PROPERLY LOCATE THE TOP OF THE JACK. RICHARDSON, HE SAID TO BRING VAN IN, BUT.HE DIDN'T KNOW IF THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO CHECK IT OUT THAT DAY. AT THAT POINT I WAS FRUSTRATED,BECAUSE THEY HAD THE VAN (3) DAYS MORE THAN THEY PROMISED. BOTTOM LINE, IS VAN WAS AGAIN CHECKED OUT, NOW HE SAYS ITS THE FUEL PUMP. PRIOR TO THE FUEL RAIL BREAKING. I HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH MY FUEL SYSTEM. I WAS INFORMED OF ANOTHER RECALL WITH THE FUEL PUMP WITH THE 1999 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN ( BUT, WAS TOLD NOT WITH MY MODEL.) THAT CLEARLY IS A FORM OF BIASED DISCRIMINATION. MY PARENTS VAN. A COUPLE OF DAYS BEFORE THIS HAPPENED I TRIED TO START IT AND ALL IT DID WAS CLICK. I TRIED TO START IT AGAIN AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP. I TURNED IT BACK OFF AND TRIED TO START IT AGAIN,SAME THING HAPPENED. ALL IT DID WAS CLICK. I THEN TRIED TO START IT AGAIN AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP. WE DROVE TO TOWN WITH NO FURTHER ISSUES THAT DAY. THE NEXT DAY IT STARTED RIGHT UP. WE DROVE ABOUT EIGHTY MILES TO MY SISTERS HOUSE. WHEN WE CAME OUT TO LEAVE IN THE EVENING. I STARTED THE VAN AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP,BUT IT WAS MAKING A RATTLING NOISE THAT I COULD JUST BARELY HEAR OVER THE ENGINE NOISE. I TURNED THE VAN OFF,BUT SOMETHING WAS STILL RUNNING. THE STARTER WAS STILL ENGAGED WITH THE ENGINE AND RUNNING. I TURNED THE KEY BACK ON AND THE ENGINE STARTED AGAIN. I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AGAIN AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED. THE STARTER STAYED RUNNING. I ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE TWO HUNDRED YARDS TO MY SISTERS GARAGE TO GET PLIERS. I REALIZED I PROBABLY DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO GET TO HER GARAGE BEFORE THE STARTER BURNT UP. I RAN IN THE HOUSE LEAVING THE VAN RUNNING. BY THE TIME I GOT BACK TO THE VAN AND GOT THE HOOD OPEN THE STARTER WAS STARTING TO SMOKE AND MAKE A REAL BAD WINNING NOISE. MY WIFE GOT A FIRE EXTINGUISHER. I PULLED THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE. BY THE TIME THAT I GOT THE CABLE OFF THE STARTER WAS ALREADY BURNT UP AND STARTING TO CATCH FIRE. THEIR WAS SO MUCH SMOKE. I HAVE KNOW DOUBT THAT IF I HAD NOT GOTTEN THE BATTERY CABLE DISCONNECTED WHEN I DID THAT THE VAN WOULD HAVE GONE UP IN FLAMES. THE OTHER BAD THING WAS THAT IT WAS SITTING NEXT TO MY SISTERS HOUSE AND THAT WOULD HAVE GONE UP IN FLAMES WITH IT. I AM JUST GLAD THAT IT DID NOT HAPPEN WHEN MY SEVENTY FIVE YEAR OLD PARENTS WERE DRIVING IT,BECAUSE I BELIEVE THAT THE VAN WOULD HAVE DEFIANTLY CAUGHT FIRE AND THEY WOULD NOT HAVE KNOWN WHAT TO DO FAST ENOUGH. SERPENTINE BELT SLIPPED OFF OF PULLEYS AFTER DRIVING OVER A WET ROAD. VEHICLE IS A 1999 DODGE CARAVAN, 3.0L V6, 4-SPEED AUTOMATIC. WITHIN THE PAST TWO WEEKS, THIS HAS HAPPENED TWO TIMES, BOTH IN WET WEATHER. THE SAME ISSUE OCCURRED ON A 1996 DODGE CARAVAN, 3.0L V6, 3-SPEED AUTOMATIC, TWICE IN THE SAME TWO WEEK PERIOD. THE IDLER AND TENSIONER PULLEYS WERE REPLACED ON BOTH VEHICLES WITH OEM-EQUIVALENT PARTS AFTER THE FIRST PROBLEM WITH EACH, YET THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 DODGE CARAVAN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM FAILED. AFTER SETTING THE CRUISE CONTROL TO 35 MPH, THE VEHICLE AUTOMATICALLY SPED UP TO 55 MPH. I HAVE HAD REPEATED SHREDDING OF THE SERPENTINE BELT ON MY 1999 DODGE CARAVAN RESULTING IN LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND SYSTEMS SHUTDOWN (INCLUDING ENGINE) DURING DRIVING. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND I HAVE READ NUMEROUS REPORTS OF THE EXACT SAME FAILURE. BRAZIL HAS RECALLED THE DODGE MINIVAN FOR THE SAME FAILURES AND DODGE HAS MADE A MODIFICATION KIT (2005) FOR THIS PROBLEM BUT REFUSES TO DATE TO POST A RECALL IN THE UNITED STATES. I HAVE REPLACED THE BELTS 6 TIMES AND THE TENSIONER 3 TIMES IN 60,000 MILES. I HAVE CALLED DODGE AND THEY HAVE REFUSED TO PAY FOR THE CORRECTION OF THE PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH I HAD THE LAST TENSIONER AND BELT PUT ON AT THE DODGE DEALERSHIP ALTHOUGH THEY USED AN OLD STYLE TENSIONER NOT THE NEW KIT EVEN THOUGH THE NEW KIT HAD BEEN AVAILABLE SINCE 2005 AND I HAD THE TENSIONER REPLACED IN 2009. *TR
