AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2003-2008 Corolla, 2005-2008 Corolla Matrix, and Pontiac Vibe vehicles equipped with a front passenger air bag assembly replaced under a prior recall. The air bag may not unfold as designed during inflation under high temperature conditions, possibly resulting in the air bag not inflating properly.
Remedy: Toyota will notify their owners. Pontiac Vibe owners will be notified by GM. Dealers will replace the front passenger air bag assembly or sub-assembly, free of charge. Toyota owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's numbers for this recall are K1Q and K0Q. Pontiac owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is N192273760.

On January 9, 2018, Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) notified NHTSA that they are recalling 14,585 model year 2010-2012 Yaris vehicles ever registered in the states of Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. As of January 30, 2018, Toyota is additionally recalling 3,347 model year 2010 Pontiac Vibe vehicles located in states listed above. Also included in this recall filing is 98,194 model year 2003-2008 Toyota Corolla Matrix vehicles, located throughout the U.S., that previously received a “like-for-like” interim air bag inflator replacement. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag assemblies with an alternate inflator, free of charge. The recall began on January 29, 2018. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are G0R (Zone B), and H0A (Zone C), J0A (Matrix Zone A), J0A (Matrix Zone A), J0A (Matrix Zone A).

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) notified the agency on May 13, 2015 that they are recalling certain model year 2004 Sequoia vehicles manufactured August 18, 2003, to August 19, 2004, and 2003-2004 Tundra vehicles manufactured March 18, 2003, to August 25, 2004. On June 16, 2015, Toyota expanded the recall to include an additional 1,270,468 vehicles, including model year 2002-2003 and 2005-2007 Sequoia, 2005-2006 Tundra, 2003-2007 Corolla, 2003-2007 Corolla Matrix, 2003-2007 Pontiac Vibe and 2002-2007 Lexus SC vehicles. This is to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag inflator which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses both the passenger side frontal air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts. A replacement air bag may have been installed, as one example, if a vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the passenger side frontal air bag.
Remedy: 2003-2004 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles that are recalled under both 15V-043 and 15V-285 are under a Do Not Drive advisory. Owners of these vehicles are advised not to drive their vehicles until the recall remedy has been completed. Toyota will notify their owners. Pontiac Vibe owners will be notified by GM. Dealers will replace the front passenger air bag. The recall began on July 13, 2015. Toyota owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Pontiac owners may call 1-800-762-2737. Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) notified the agency on May 13, 2015, that they are recalling 2005-2007 Lexus SC, Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Sequoia, and Pontiac Vibe, and 2005-2006 Toyota Tundra vehicles that were originally sold, or ever registered, in Florida, along the Gulf Coast, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Saipan and American Samoa. On June 16, 2015 Toyota expanded the recall to cover an additional 769,055 vehicles, including certain model year 2002-2004 Lexus SC, Toyota Sequoia, 2003-2004 Toyota Corolla Matrix, Toyota Corolla, Pontiac Vibe, and Toyota Tundra vehicles, as well the vehicles covered by the May 13, 2015 notification in the portions of Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas that were not previously included. The inflators in the front passenger air bags are susceptible to rupture in the event of a crash necessitating the deployment of the front passenger air bag.
Remedy: 2003-2004 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles that are recalled under both 15V-043 and 15V-286 are under a Do Not Drive advisory. The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Matrix. The contact stated while driving approximately 45 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights started flashing and the RPM gauge fluctuated from a low RPM to high RPM. The contact stated that he pulled over and attempted to restart the vehicle. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to restart. The contact had a voltmeter and checked the battery and noticed that the battery was low on charge. The contact had recently installed a new battery. The contact jump started the vehicle and was able to shift into drive (D) however, the vehicle was hesitating and not responsive while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent but had become a recurring failure. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The contact had requested vehicle history from the manufacturer and determined that the Electronic Control Unit had been replaced in 2011 under NHTSA Campaign Number: 10V384000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The failure mileage was approximately 131,000.

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Corolla Matrix. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a transmission center and the contact was informed that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in NHTSA Campaign Number: 10V384000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The vehicle was taken to the dealer and it was confirmed that the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was contacted and the contact was referred to the NHTSA for assistance. The failure mileage was 143,000.

I have been waiting over 2 years for this passenger side airbag recall to be remedied. I was told a remedy was available about a year and a half ago, but despite many calls and service appointments where I left the car with Toyota (they even kept my car for nearly 9 hours once), they always tell me they don't have the part available and that they will call me when it becomes available (they still haven't). I tried multiple Toyota service centers in my area with the same results. The airbag was already recalled previously and the remedy was to replace it with an airbag part that was also recalled, so in actuality it has probably been over 5 years since the original recall and after all this time my car still has an airbag inflator that may cause fire, injury or death. I paid for a car so I could use all of the available seating, and for most of my time owning it and for the foreseeable future I'm being told by Toyota not to use the front passenger seat. Totally unacceptable, regardless of parts shortage this shouldn't be a problem to bear solely by the vehicle owner, I have never been offered a loaner or anything to make up for the money I wasted on a car I can't use as advertised.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE, THE VEHICLE STALLED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE AND APPROXIMATELY 20 SECONDS LATER, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY OPERATED AS NORMAL AND THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO DRIVE NORMALLY. THE FAILURE HAD OCCURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE LOCAL DEALER HOFFMAN TOYOTA LOCATED AT 36 ALBANY TURNPIKE, WEST SIMSBURY, CT 06092 AND THE MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 10V384000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE CONTACT INDICATED THE VEHICLE HAD EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE LISTED IN THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 81,000.

THE PROBLEM IS NOT SPECIFIC TO THIS CAR. THE TIRE SPEED RATING SYSTEM IN USE TODAY IS LONG OVERDUE FOR UPGRADING. PROBLEM 1 IS THE CONFUSION THAT EXISTS BETWEEN Y AND (Y). ONLINE TIRE DEALERS OFTEN BLUR THE TWO CATEGORIES. PROBLEM 2 IS THE ACTUAL SPEED RATING OF (Y) -- IT IS UNKNOWN BUT HIGHER THAN 186. PROBLEM 3 IS THAT TIRES IN THE UPPER RANGES ARE NOT SEPARATED. IF YOU BUY TIRES FOR A 2004 FORD GT, THEY MUST BE GOOD FOR UP TO 215 MPH, BUT 270 MPH IS NOT NECESSARY. THERE ARE MANY TIRES THAT ARE GOOD FOR 215 BUT NOT 270 MPH. THE CURRENT SYSTEM DOES NOT TELL CONSUMERS WHICH TIRE IS SAFE! I PROPOSE A NEW METRIC-BASED SYSTEM. THE FOLLOWING SPEED RATINGS WOULD ASSIGNED TO EACH TIRE: SPEED RATING 15 (150 KM/H) 20 (200 KM/H) 25 (250 KM/H) 30 (300 KM/H) 35 (350 KM/H) 40 (400 KM/H) 45 (450 KM/H) 50 (500 KM/H)

I APPRECIATE THAT TOYOTA YOUNGER FIXED THE AIRBAG RECALL. I WOULD HAVE APPRECIATE IF THEY WOULD HAVE WIPED DOWN THE DASH BOARD AFTER INSTALLING. I ALSO NOTICED THE PANEL OVER THE AIRBAG HAS A BUCKLE/CREASE AND IT DOES NOT LOOK SECURE AROUND THE EDGES. I HAVE ATTACHED IMAGES . IT NEVER LOOKED LIKE BEFORE A DROPPED OFF MY CAR.

I WAS IN A CAR ACCIDENT LAST YEAR AND I WAS SITTING ON THE PASSENGER SEAT AND MY HUSBAND WAS ON THE DRIVERS SEAT ALONG WITH MY TWO CHILDREN IN THE BACK SEAT. WE WERE REAR ENDED BY HIGH SPEED VEHICLE DRIVING ERRATICALLY. ALL OF US SUFFERED WHIP LASH AND BACK INJURIES IN THE ACCIDENT. ALSO, THE AIRBAG NEVER GOT DEPLOYED AND THE AIR BAG SIGN IS ON THE DASH BOARD. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS LIFE AND DEATH SITUATION AND I AM UPSET FOR BUYING A BRAND NEW CAR WHICH I HOPED THAT ALL SAFETY EQUIPMENT WILL BE WORKING. I WAS SHOCKED AND HURT AT THE SAME TIME. AFTER THAT FEW MONTHS LATER I RECEIVED AIRBAG RECALL NOTICE TO TAKE THE VEHICLE FOR REPAIR TO THE NEAREST TOYOTA DEALER SHIP. I HAVE RECEIVED THREE (3) SEPARATE RECALL NOTICES TO FIX THE AIRBAG ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF MY VEHICLE. TOYOTA HAS NOT ALLOWED ME TO DRIVE A SAFE VEHICLE IN OVER 10 YEARS. I DO NOT FEEL CONFIDENT THAT THEY WILL EVER MAKE IT SAFE. THE NHTSA NEEDS TO STEP IN AND FIX THIS ISSUE IMMEDIATELY. EVEN THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT OF THE SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF FLORIDA HAS STEPPED IN WITH A CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT. TOYOTA AND TAKATA SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO CONTINUE TO DO BUSINESS IN THE UNITED STATES UNTIL ALL OF THIS IS SUCCESSFULLY RESOLVED.

MY FOUR EXTERIOR DOOR HANDLES ARE MADE UP OF CHEAP PLASTIC AND THEY HAVE DISINTEGRATED. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS TO OPERATE THIS VEHICLE SINCE GETTING IN AND OUT OF THIS VEHICLE IS NOT EASY. I CAN ONLY ACCESS THE VEHICLE THROUGH THE DRIVER'S DOOR. ALL THE OTHER HANDLES HAVE BROKEN OFF COMPLETELY. WHEN YOU USE THIS VEHICLE IN AN URBAN, TRAFFIC CONGESTED SITUATION, ENTERING THIS CAR BECOMES VERY DANGEROUS. IF THIS VEHICLE WAS EVER INVOLVED IN A CAR ACCIDENT, IT WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE TO JUST OPEN THE CAR DOORS TO RESCUE PASSENGERS SINCE THE DOOR ARE INOPERABLE.

I WAS DRIVING HOME ON A 2 LANE CITY STREET A FEW WEEKS AGO WHEN I HEARD A LOUD CRASH/EXPLOSION OF SOME KIND ON WHAT SEEMED TO BE THE TOP OF MY CAR, WHEN I HAD GOTTEN HOME I SAW THE SUNROOF HAD COMPLETELY SMASHED AS IF SOMETHING HAD FALLEN ON TOP OF IT, BUT I AND THE GUY WHO REPLACED THE SUNROOF FOUND NO ROCKS OR ANY POINT OF IMPACT ON THE SUNROOF, SO IT HAD APPEARED TO CRACK SPONTANEOUSLY. WE HAD BEEN HAVING ICY WEATHER THE WEEK PRIOR BUT IT HAD BEEN COLD ENOUGH FOR A WHILE THAT A SUDDEN TEMPERATURE CHANGE COULDN'T HAVE BEEN WHAT CAUSED IT. NO GLASS FELL INTO THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE INNER LINING OF THE ROOF HAD BEEN PULLED SHUT, BUT IT COST $700 TO REPLACE IT AND WE HAD TO DRIVE TO OMAHA, 60 MILES AWAY FROM WHERE I AM, TO GET IT REPLACED.

I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 70MPH ALONG THE BEELINE HIGHWAY OUTSIDE OF PHOENIX AZ AND NEGOTIATING A GENTLE CURVE IN THE ROAD. IT WAS ABOUT 1:30PM ON A CLEAR DAY. I FELT A STRONG LURCH (THOUGHT I HAD BEEN HIT FROM BEHIND ALTHOUGH I KNEW THERE WERE NO CARS AROUND ME) ALMOST IMMEDIATELY I ATTEMPTED TO STRAIGHTEN THE WHEEL AND FOUND MYSELF UNABLE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE CAR MOUNTED THE MEDIAN ROAD DIVIDER, CAME DOWN, SPUN 360 DEGREES AND GENTLY DRIFTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I WAS NOT INJURED BUT THE CAR WAS TOTALED. I LOOKED ON LINE AFTER THE ACCIDENT AND DID FIND SOME ACCOUNTS OF THIS KIND OF FROZEN WHEEL SCENARIO WITH THE LURCH THAT I FELT BUT ALSO AT MUCH LOWER SPEEDS. I HAVE CALLED NUMEROUS TIMES BUT EXPERIENCE EXTREMELY LONG HOLD TIMES, TO THE POINT WHERE I EVENTUALLY DECIDE TO TRY AGAIN SOMETIME.
