2016 NISSAN TITAN Recalls, Complaints & Safety

Truck died while traveling at 60MPH, once safely pulled over saw it shutdown due to low oil pressure. Checked the oil level and found correct level on dipstick. Attempted to start, no start. Towed to shop, they drained the oil and verified correct oil quantity cam out. Pulled the oil pan and found metal in the oil pan. Told I need a replacement engine. Engine has 95k miles with proper maintenance performed per the owners manual.

Wow Towing very little weight on flat grade. The crankshaft broke. I was told that this was a problem with this particular vehicle, not marrying the transmission and the diesel Cummins engine up correctly. This vehicle has been sitting for over two years because of this issue the cost to repair is twice with the vehicle is worth.

I was driving down the freeway on cruise,when all of a sudden,the vehicle started vibrating and shaking violently.This happened in the middle of a downpour,and the tires broke loose momentarily,but I was able to gain control,and safely pull on to the shoulder.After searching the internet,this incident sounds very much like a broken crankshaft,as described in the many,many reports of this type of failure,especialy in the 2016 model years,like mine.

Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2016 Nissan Titan. The vehicle was a dealer sale. The contact later discovered a mileage discrepancy. At the time of purchase, the vehicle mileage was 31,190. When the vehicle was later taken to a dealer for an engine failure, the dealer informed the contact that the mileage was 226,000.

Driving down the interstate 2 days in a row cruise control 72 mph and go into reduced engine power. I believe it is the EGR cooler as well as many other people’s are having the same issue.

The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. WAS DRIVING TO WORK AND ENGINE HAD HICCUP AND ALMOST SHUTOFF IN MIDDLE OF ROADWAY. WAS ABLE TO LIMP TRUCK TO MY DESTINATION. ENGINE WAS RUNNING ROUGH. NO FAULT CODES OR DASH LIGHTS TO INDICATE ANY ISSUES. TOOK TRUCK TO SHOP AND THEY COULD NOT FIGURE IT OUT. HAD SERVICE SHOP DRAIN OIL AND INSPECT OIL FILTER. METAL DEBRIS WAS FOUND IN OIL AND OIL FILTER. HAD ENGINE REMOVED FROM TRUCK AND FOUND 3 SPUN MAIN BEARINGS, CRANKSHAFT POSSIBLY BROKEN.

Driving down the road and engine lost power and shut off. Took it to a shop and they said my crankshaft broke.

There is a known issue by Nissan regarding many issues with the XD Diesel platform trucks. Mine is a castrophic engine failure at 76,237 miles. There was a recall previously on turbos for many 2016s & 2017s. One is not showing up for mine and as I bought the truck used can not confirm or deny my truck was one effected by this recall. I was driving and heard a light thump and had just had my tires rotated. It sounds like a tool or piece of rubber was inside the tire. I got out and made sure tires were on tight. Got back in the truck and got an engine loss of power warning and then the "oil pressure low stop vehicle" warning. I immediately pulled over and called insurance company for a tow. My truck now sits at the dealership needing a new motor and 2 turbos to the estimated cost of $39,850.

The specific issue I have identified and thoroughly documented on my own 2016 Nissan Titan XD is as follows: Observed Defect: The engine oil pressure gauge consistently reads "normal" (approximately 1/2 scale) at all times, including with the Key On, Engine Off (KOEO). Crucially, the corresponding oil pressure warning light does NOT illuminate during the normal Key On, Engine Off bulb check or at any other time, despite the engine not running. Diagnostic Findings (Summary): Preliminary diagnostics, including unplugging the oil pressure sensor, indicate a likely fault with the oil pressure sending unit itself, causing it to send a false "normal pressure" signal. My vehicle spun a bearing, or broke the crankshaft in two, there is tons of metal in my oil, oil pan, and oil filter. The shop that is diagnosing it, and quoting me a new motor, said they have replaced AT LEAST 7 titan xd Cummins motors, and every single forum and person online that owns one reports the crank shaft breaking. Nissan or Cummins needs to be held responsible for this. And the NHTSA needs to put their foot down and actually protect American consumers. They sold these trucks for at minimum 40k and the motors all blow up around 100k miles? Absolutely disgusting that they can get away with this. What do expect in America I guess

This car becomes completely undriveable due to an unspecified def error. The error it turns out seems to be tied to an electrical wiring harness which costs about 8000$ dollars to repair btw and seems to be chronic due to a design flaw on all the titan xds. It becomes damaged by water due to a design flaw in the tail light oddly enough. Look at the Nissan Forum for more info. Engine made a loud popping noise, shuttered and stalled in heavy traffic, I came within inches of being rear-ended. Required a tow truck. Repair shop informed me that the crankshaft is broken and this is a common problem. Being repaired at this time, I am informed this will cost about twenty thousand dollars. Thank you Nissan!

During cruising at 70mph on the interstate, vehicle started making some noise from the engine and 5 miles later locked up completely leaving me stranded. This is a known issue with the 5.0 Cummins. My safety and the safety of others was put at risk through the vehicle being disabled on the side of the highway all of the sudden during rush hour traffic. Problem was confirmed at a dealer. No warning lamps or messages prior to complete engine failure, just some slight noise from the engine a few minutes before.

The dealer informed the contact that the manufacturer had denied the Extended Warranty coverage. The vehicle was repaired at the owner's expense. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. 2016 nissan titan xd faulty number 8 injector this is the third time the trucks been to nissan for this issue the truck will drive fine then drops speed and starts to surge with knocking in the motor with service light making it a danger on the highway the truck is currently at nissan and it's been there going on a month

The Crank snapped at 180k miles.

5.0l Cummins engine. Was driving fine then the crank shaft snapped and ruined the engine.

The crankshaft snapped and locked up the motor. My safety was at risk as well as oncoming traffic because it could have caused an accident when locking up the motor. It has been confirmed by a local diesel mechanic. There was no warning at all, I was driving down the highway at 75 and as I started to go up an incline the truck had to downshift and it started to knock loud and then froze up and the truck came to a fast stop.

Vehicle hesitates at acceleration. Also known as dead pedal. Going through an intersection, hit the gas pedal and nothing for 2-3 zeconds

While driving at about 55 mph truck suddenly lost power engine shaking and making a lot of noise pulled over to check under the hood couldn’t see anything obvious so I tried to make it home which was about 2.5 miles away truck would not make it so I pulled it into an empty parking lot a walked home.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Fuel system/oil system catastrophic engine failure. Yes it is How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Truck shut down on highway at 70 mph with a child and wife in the truck Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Truck needs a complete motor. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Inspection was through a well know ase diesel technician Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, no there was not and when did they first appear? N/A

In July 2024 after having my Bosch CP4 Injector pump and fuel system replaced by my dealership due to the injector pump failure, I went around a corner and when I went to accelerate the truck wouldn't. After several moments and the truck just coasting down the road without any power it started to respond to the accelerator pedal. It did the same thing in November of 2024 while I was towing my travel trailer only this time, I had to stop in the middle of the road turn the truck off and back on before it would accelerate under its own power. Last Thursday January 9, 2025 the truck did it several times while I was driving it each time I had to roll off the road without any power, turn the truck off wait a few moments and turn the truck back on before I could drive it under its own power. I had not driven the truck since then but today it has done it twice with lost of power while driving in traffic! Each time this has happen the check engine light has come on and I have check the codes with a code reader and it is always a "P226C Turbocharger Boost Control 'A' Slow Response". And there will be as many as four different instances of the same code.

Engine crankshaft broke, was cruising down the highway doing 70 in the fast lane, lost power steering then realized the truck was not running any longer, thankfully it was at night and the highway wasn't busy and was able to coast back to the right side of the highway to an exit ramp, but could have been a lot worse. Had no warning truck was running perfectly fine before hand, it did restart a couple hours later but has a loud knocking and low oil pressure light comes on it shuts down. Had to get towed. Vehicle is able to be inspected any time, I still owe on it and dealership is quoting 25k to 30k to repair and truck is not worth that. Have been told by multiply shops that this is becoming and issue with these trucks. The component has not been inspected by anybody mention above in your questions. No warning lights and no signs that it was going to shut off.

Loud rattle/knocking from engine while driving. Truck shut down with no advanced warning and would not start or turn over. Got off road and had vehicle towed. 2 different diesel mechanics suspect broken crankshaft.

Driving down the road, truck lost all power and shut down, towed to the local nissan dealership, needs a new engine, Truck has 89k miles on it

The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the crankshaft had failed, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000. The VIN was not available.

Driving down highway lost power, pulled over halfway off road, attempted to restart. Was able to start and move ten feet, then shut off and would not restart. There was no warning before hand. Took to independent mechanic and disassembled the engine. Crankshaft was broken in three places. Contacted dealership and was no longer warrantied. Mechanic could not find reason for failure, he thought it might be harmonic based failure. Purchased and installed a used engine. Disappointed in parts availability from Nissan.

Early 2024, winter: Transfer case has only ever been used twice, and it failed. The entire transfer case had to be replaced. Case was replaced by an authorized Nissan dealership. This is a known problem by Nissan, just like the terrible 5.0 diesel engine.

Driving down the interstate on cruise control at 75mph and the Crankshaft snapped.
