SOME OF THE REAR DRIVESHAFT COUPLINGS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN MANUFACTURED TO THE REQUIRED ENGINEERING DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS AND MAY EXHIBIT THE ONSET OF JOINT SEPARATION, PRECLUDED BY DRIVE LINE VIBRATION.

PURCHASED VEHICLE IN JULY IT HAS BEEN LOOKED AT AND REPAIRED 8 TIMES. TWICE TO THE DEALER, THE SECOND TIME THEY TOLD ME IT HAD A CRACKED ENGINE BLOCK AND WOULD COST 10,000 TO REPLACE THE ENGINE(THAT'S WHAT I PAID FOR THE CAR). THE FIRST TIME IT WAS THERE FOR AN INSPECTION THEY TOLD ME IN 2002 THEY REPLACED THE RADIATOR AND 2005 IT WAS THERE FOR OVERHEATING ISSUES. THE COOLANT FLUID WOULD NOT STAY IN AND KEPT LEAKING. IT CONSTANTLY OVERHEATED AND WHEN I DROVE IT OFF THE LOT, BEFORE I EVEN GOT HOME THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. IT'S BEING HELD AT A REPAIR SHOP THAT THE DEALER TOOK IT TO BECAUSE I CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY THEM TO FIX WHAT THEY SAY IS WRONG WITH IT AND I THOUGHT THE DEALER WAS GOING TO FIX IT. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR 2000 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY II (WITH 50,000 MILES) ON MD HIGHWAY 15 WITH MY THREE CHILDREN WHEN SHE HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND THE VEHICLE CAME TO A SLOW STOP. THE CAR WAS STILL RUNNING, BUT WOULD NOT GO INTO GEAR. SHE CALLED FOR A TOW AND WE HAD THE CAR DIAGNOSED AT A LOCAL MECHANIC. WHEN I FOUND OUT WHAT HAPPENED I WAS ABSOLUTELY ASTOUNDED. THE VEHICLES UNIVERSAL JOINT FAILED CAUSING THE DRIVE SHAFT TO FALL FROM THE TRANSFER CASE AND CRACK THE TRANSMISSION. THIS CAR HAD BEEN SERVICED AND CARED FOR EXTREMELY WELL-IT WAS CONSIDERED TO BE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. A CAR WITH 50,000 MILES SHOULD NOT HAVE THE UNIVERSAL JOINT FAIL. THE MECHANIC WAS VERY CLEAR IN STATING IT WAS DEFINITELY A MANUFACTURING FLAW. AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE, MY WIFE WAS ON THE OFF RAMP TRAVELING AT 15 MILES AN HOUR-IF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED AT NORMAL HIGHWAY SPEED, THE OUTCOME WOULD HAVE BEEN QUITE DIFFERENT; I AM LUCKY NO BODY WAS HURT. I IMMEDIATELY HAD IT TOWED TO LAND ROVER BETHESDA WHERE I WAS SURE LAND ROVER WOULD ASSIST IN THE REPAIR OF SUCH A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR 2000 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY II (WITH 50,000 MILES) ON MD HIGHWAY 15 WITH MY THREE CHILDREN WHEN SHE HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND THE VEHICLE CAME TO A SLOW STOP. THE CAR WAS STILL RUNNING, BUT WOULD NOT GO INTO GEAR. SHE CALLED FOR A TOW AND WE HAD THE CAR DIAGNOSED AT A LOCAL MECHANIC. WHEN I FOUND OUT WHAT HAPPENED I WAS ABSOLUTELY ASTOUNDED. THE VEHICLES UNIVERSAL JOINT FAILED CAUSING THE DRIVE SHAFT TO FALL FROM THE TRANSFER CASE AND CRACK THE TRANSMISSION. THIS CAR HAD BEEN SERVICED AND CARED FOR EXTREMELY WELL-IT WAS CONSIDERED TO BE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. A CAR WITH 50,000 MILES SHOULD NOT HAVE THE UNIVERSAL JOINT FAIL. THE MECHANIC WAS VERY CLEAR IN STATING IT WAS DEFINITELY A MANUFACTURING FLAW. AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE, MY WIFE WAS ON THE OFF RAMP TRAVELING AT 15 MILES AN HOUR-IF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED AT NORMAL HIGHWAY SPEED, THE OUTCOME WOULD HAVE BEEN QUITE DIFFERENT; I AM LUCKY NO BODY WAS HURT. I IMMEDIATELY HAD IT TOWED TO LAND ROVER BETHESDA WHERE I WAS SURE LAND ROVER WOULD ASSIST IN THE REPAIR OF SUCH A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. MOST OF WHICH WERE RATED 4-5 WITH 10 BEING THE MOST DIFFICULT. ALL OF A SUDDEN, THE ABS/TC/HDC WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON PARTICULARLY ON CERTAIN SECTIONS OF THE TRAIL WHERE THERE WERE INCLINES, RUTS AND GULLEYS. WE GOT STUCK SO MANY TIMES AND EVEN AT ONE POINT ALMOST TIPPED ONE SIDE AS ONLY ONE WHEEL HAS POWER AND ALL THREE WERE RATHER STATIONARY. NO OFF-ROAD OR DEEP WATER DRIVING OCCURRED PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. AT 49,550 MILES THE TRANSMISSION BECAME INOPERATIVE. VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE IN ANY GEAR. SUBSEQUENTLY FOUND WATER IN TRANSMISSION FLUID WHICH HAD DAMAGED TRANSMISSION PARTS REQUIRING COMPLETE NEW SYSTEM. AS THIS SYSTEM IS SUPPOSED TO BE A CLOSED SYSTEM NEITHER THE LOCAL LAND ROVER SERVICE MANAGER NOR THE AAMCO TECHNICIANS HAVE ANY IDEA HOW WATER COULD HAVE ENTERED THE SYSTEM. CAR IS THEN ACCELERATED (TO SPEED 2) AFTER STOP. OCCASIONALLY, CRUISE CONTROL TAKES OVER (RESUMES WITHOUT CUSTOMER ACTIVATION) AND SETS ITSELF BACK TO SPEED 1 (SPEED PRIOR TO BRAKING). THIS VEHICLE HAS CAUSED US A LOT OF INCONVENIENCE. THE RECENT ACCIDENTS (WITHIN TWO WEEKS OF EACH OTHER) HAVE ALSO CAUSED US TO LOSE CONFIDENCE IN THE VEHICLE, LET ALONG THE FINANCIAL LOSSES. WE ARE AFRAID OF DRIVING THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER AND THE DEALER REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE PROBLEM SIMPLY BECAUSE THERE WAS NO INJURY. TWICE THE REAR SUSPENSION FAILED TO WORK, CAUSING THE REAR SIDE OF THE VEHICLE TO SINK DANGEROUSLY LOW. I ALMOST LOST MY LIFE WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH ONE SUNDAY MORNING BECAUSE THE VEHICLE LOST TOTAL CONTROL: STEERING WHEEL FROZE AND THE BRAKE FAILED TO WORK. ONE WEEK AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS RELEASED FROM THE DEALER, THE VEHICLE DIED IN THE MIDDLE OF HIGH WAY, CAUSING MAJOR TRIFFIC JAM.
