(LAND ROVER) IS RECALLING CERTAIN REAR DRIVESHAFT COUPLINGS, LAND ROVER BRANDED PART NUMBER TVF100010, MANUFACTURED FROM APRIL 2011 THROUGH NOVEMBER 2011, SOLD FOR USE AS SERVICE PARTS FOR CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1995-1999 DISCOVERY, 1999-2004 DISCOVERY II, AND 1995 RANGE ROVER CLASSIC VEHICLES. SOME OF THE REAR DRIVESHAFT COUPLINGS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN MANUFACTURED TO THE REQUIRED ENGINEERING DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS AND MAY EXHIBIT THE ONSET OF JOINT SEPARATION, PRECLUDED BY DRIVE LINE VIBRATION.
Remedy: LAND ROVER WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE AFFECTED REAR DRIVESHAFT COUPLERS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 4, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT JAGUAR LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA AT 1-201-818-8500.

MY 1999 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2 DEVELOPED A FUEL LEAK ON THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP CLOSE TO THE OUTLET WHERE THE FUEL FLOW MAKES A 90 DEGREE TURN BEFORE EXITING THE FUEL PUMP. I NOTICED THE SMELL OF FUEL (GASOLINE ) AROUND THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE WHILE PARKED. BUT I HAD RECENTLY FILLED UP THE TANK AND THOUGHT IT WAS JUST SOME SPILLAGE FROM THE FILL UP. I KEPT SMELLING THE FUMES FOR SEVERAL MONTHS BEFORE I FINALLY WATCHED A YOUTUBE VIDEO SHOWING HOW TO REPAIR A FUEL PUMP ON MY VEHICLE , WHEN I CUT THE CARPET TO EXPOSE THE COVER PLATE AND REMOVED THE COVER PLATE I NOTICED A POOL OF GASOLINE SITTING INSIDE THE ROUND PART IN THE CENTER OF THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP. I STOPPED DRIVING OTHER PEOPLE AROUND IN MY LAND ROVER BECAUSE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF IGNITION , THE GAS TANK ITSELF WAS COVERED WITH GASOLINE RESIDUE THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS FUEL PUMP THAT MAY KILL THE OCCUPANTS OF THIS VEHICLE WERE IT TO IGNITE FOR SOME REASON. I THINK THIS FUEL PUMP SHOULD BE RECALLED AND REDESIGNED TO ADD STRENGTH TO THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP. A FEW MORE CENTS WORTH OF PLASTIC WOULD SOLVE THIS ISSUE BUT THIS MANUFACTURER IS MOST LIKELY LOOKING AT THE RESALE VALUE OF THESE PARTS AS ARE ALL MANUFACTURERS TODAY. I BOUGHT THIS LAND ROVER THINKING THAT IT WOULD BE A STURDY VEHICLE TO DRIVE AND TO FEEL SAFER DRIVING , ESPECIALLY WHILE DRIVING MY CHILD AROUND IN IT. ALSO THESE FUEL PUMPS COST WAY TOO MUCH COMPARED TO OTHER ALMOST IDENTICAL FUEL PUMPS MADE BY THE SAME MANUFACTURER AND THAT IS WHY I HAVEN'T ALREADY FIXED IT MYSELF.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MECHANIC REFERRED THE CONTACT TO A DRIVE SHAFT TECHNICIAN. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, THE DRIVE SHAFT DISCONNECTED FROM THE VEHICLE CAUSING THE CONTACT TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE MOMENTARILY. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO MERGE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE ENTIRE DRIVE SHAFT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. MY 1999 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY II MADE A GRINDING NOISE AND THEN A LOUD EXPLOSION SOUND WHILE DRIVING AT 70 MPH ON THE INTERSTATE. THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT FELL OFF, BUSTED THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND RIPPED A HOLE IN THE FIRE WALL AND TRANSMISSION CASE. APPARENTLY THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH MY YEAR OF LAND ROVER AND NOTHING IS BEING DONE TO CORRECT THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM. MY 1999 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY MADE A GRINDING NOISE, AND CAME TO A SCREECHING HALT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 10-15 MPH. IT TURNED OUT THAT THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT SHEARED IN HALF. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A TRANSMISSION SPECIALIST IN MY TOWN. WHEN I SPOKE TO BOTH THAT MECHANIC AS WELL AS MY REGULAR MECHANIC TODAY ABOUT THE ISSUE, BOTH OF THEM HAD OTHER INSTANCES OF THIS HAPPENING TO LAND ROVER DISCOVERIES ALL AT AROUND 100,000 MILES. (MY VEHICLE IS AT 99,000) BOTH MECHANICS SAID THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING AT 100,000 MILES, AND IT CAN BE A SEVERE PROBLEM, ESPECIALLY AT HIGHER SPEEDS (IN ONE OF THE OTHER INSTANCES THE SHAFT RIPPED THROUGH THE FLOORBOARDS AND TRANSMISSION CASE = OVER $4500 IN DAMAGE) I SPOKE TO BOTH MY DEALER (PARAMUS, NJ AND SOMEONE IN THE HQ - MAHWAH, NJ) AND BOTH STATED UNLESS THE PROBLEM IS COVERED BY A RECALL, THEY CONSIDER IT THE CUSTOMERS RESPONSIBILITY. I AM NOT LOOKING FOR MONEY - MY REPAIR IS ABOUT $1200. WHAT I WOULD LIKE IS FOR LAND ROVER TO AT THE VERY LEAST TO SEND A LETTER TO OWNERS ADVISING THEM AT AROUND 90,000 - 100,000 MILES THE JOINTS IN THE DRIVESHAFT BE ACCESSED TO AVOID A MAJOR ISSUE. THE TOWN I LIVE IN HAS APPROX 6,000 PEOPLE, AND ALREADY 4 INCIDENTS OF THE EXACT SAME ISSUE HAVE OCCURRED. I AM WORRIED THAT OUR OLDER MODELS ARE NOW REACHING THE 100,000 MILE MARK, AND THIS ISSUE WILL CONTINUE WITH NEWER MODELS AS THE MILES ADD UP. I HAVE A 1999 DISCOVERY II. THE ABS WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASH HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ON; NICKNAMED AS YOU MIGHT ALREADY KNOW "THE THREE AMIGOS" BY THOUSANDS OF LAND ROVER OWNERS. THE THREE AMIGOS REFERS TO THE THREE WARNING LIGHTS ON DASHBOARD: ABS, TC-TRACTION CONTROL, DOWNHILL DESCENT. I WAS TOLD BY THE LOCAL DEALER IN ENCINO, CA IT WAS THE ABS MODULATOR. THEY DIDN'T PUT IT ON PAPER, BUT THEY SAID VERBALLY IF YOU DON'T GET THE "ABS MODULATOR REPLACED, YOU WILL HAVE BRAKE FAILURE. YET, LAND ROVER WON'T RECALL IT. TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE "THREE AMIGOS", CAUSED BY THE ABS MODULATOR. THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED CASE. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE; HOWEVER, THE LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 54,772 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS AT 20,421.

DT: 1999 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY SERIES 2. THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR FOR THE ABS UNIT SHOWED A DEFAULT WHICH DISABLED THE ABS. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP, AND THEY WOULD NOT USE THE ORIGINAL PARTS TO REPLACE THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR. THEY HAVE MANUFACTURED THREE DIFFERENT PARTS. THIS ONLY HAPPENED ON THE PASSENGER'S SIDE FRONT WHEEL SPEED SENSOR. THIS HAS BEEN FIXED THREE TIMES. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS NOT A DEFECT IN MANUFACTURING. NORMAL DRIVING IN SUMMER WHEN MY 1999 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY II'S ABS AND TRACTION CONTROL WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED AND STAYED ON. TWO DAYS LATER THOSE LIGHTS WERE JOINED BY THE HILL DECENT WARNING LIGHT AS WELL. I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC WHO DID NOT HAVE THE PROPER TOOL TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM - BRAKE SYSTEM WAS BLED BUT THE LIGHTS STILL REMAIN. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT W/THE DEALER NEXT MONTH BUT UNTIL THEN I HAVE NO USE OF THE ABS SYSTEM WHICH CONTROLS SEVERAL FUNCTIONS ON THE VEHICLE. I HAVE HAD THE ABS RECALL WORK PERFORMED ON MY LAND ROVER DURING THE SUMMER OF 1993, I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS RELATED TO THAT RECALL OR NOT.

DEALER REPLACED 3 ABS SENSORS AND RESET ECU CODES. 200 YARDS AFTER LEAVING SHOP, WARNING LIGHTS AND CHIMES RETURNED. DEALER ATTEMPTED REMEDIAL WORK - ERROR INDICATED STUCK VALVE IN ABS PUMP - TO NO AVAIL. CODES WERE RE-SET, TWO DAYS LATER TURNING LEFT, WARNINGS AND CHIMES RETURNED. LAND ROVER INDICATED THAT ABS PUMP NEEDS REPLACING IS THE ONLY REMEDY (PARTS ~$2,000). WEB SEARCH INDICATED THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH 99 DISCOVERY OWNERS. ON THE EVENING OF MARCH 16TH, MY VEHICLE EXPERIENCED AN EPISODE OF SUDDEN ACCELERATION. THE EVENT OCCURRED LEAVING A SKI AREA (APPROX 9,000 FEET ELEVATION)ON A TWO LANE ROAD WITH AN AVERAGE 6% GRADE. THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN THE LATE AFTERNOON WITH TEMPERATURES APPROXIMATELY 50 DEGREES AND WAS PARKED UNTIL 7:30 THAT EVENING WHEN THE AIR TEMPERATURE HAD DROPPED TO ABOUT 34 DEGREES. I STARTED THE VEHICLE AS NORMAL AND PROCEEDED TO LEAVE THE RESORT PARKING LOT. AS I CRESTED THE HILL TO THE MAIN ROAD, THE ENGINE BEGAN ACCELERATING (RPM ABOVE 4,000). I LIFTED MY FOOT TO MAKE SURE THAT I WAS NOT INADVERTENTLY STEPPING ON THE ACCELERATOR AND THE VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD. I HAD GREAT DIFFICULTY TRYING TO SLOW THE VEHICLE USING THE BRAKES. I WAS ABLE TO SLOW THE CAR ENOUGH TO JOLT THE TRANSMISSION INTO PARK TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE ENGINE REVS CLIMBED ABOVE 5,000 AS I SHUT THE MOTOR OFF. I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE IN A FEW MOMENTS AND IT BEHAVED NORMALLY IN THE RATHER NERVOUS 12 MILE TRIP DOWN THE CANYON. SINCE THE SINGLE EPISODE, IT HAS BEHAVED NORMALLY. ORDERED A NEW BELT FROM LAND ROVER AND ASKED A LOCAL MECHANIC TO INSTALL IT (BECAUSE I LIVE AN HOUR AWAY FROM LAND ROVER). MY WIFE STARTED VEHICLE IN GARAGE (ENGINE COLD). SHE PLACED IN REVERSE AND STARTED BACKING INTO DRIVEWAY. VEHICLE SUDDENLY LUNGED BACKWARD, ENGINE RACING. MY WIFE TRIED UNSUCCESSFULLY TO STOP THE CAR WITH THE BRAKES, BUT THE VEHICLE WAS ACCELERATING TOO RAPIDLY. JUST BEFORE SHE RAN OUT OF DRIVEWAY, SHE PLACED THE TRANSMISSION IN PARK AND SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. LAND ROVER BROUGHT IN A TECHNICIAN WHO KEPT THE CAR TWO DAYS, RUNNING TESTS. THEY RETURNED THE CAR TO US HAVING ADJUSTED SOMETHING ON THE BRAKES TO MAKE SURE THEY WERE WORKING PROPERLY (WHICH THEY ALREADY WERE). THEY TOLD US THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND ANY PROBLEM THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION. WE WERE AFRAID TO CONTINUE DRIVING IT IF THEY COULDN'T FIND THE PROBLEM. WE CALLED LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA AND COMPLAINED. WE WERE TOLD THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE AND SAID THE VEHICLE WAS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR BUY-BACK. WE THEN TALKED TO THE LOCAL DEALER AND SOLD THE VEHICLE TO THEM, AT A MUCH LOWER PRICE THAN WE COULD HAVE IF WE HAD BEEN WILLING TO SELL IT OURSELVES TO AN INDIVIDUAL. PLEASE NOTE: OUR NEIGHBOR SAW AND HEARD THE VEHICLE WHEN IT LUNGED BACKWARD; HE SAID IT SOUNDED LIKE THE ENGINE WAS REVVED UP HIGH AND HE SAW A CLOUD OF BLACK SMOKE COME OUT OF THE TAILPIPE.*AK
