Frequently Asked Questions
This tool searches the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS) for all public water systems registered in your ZIP code. It shows their violation history, including health-based violations where contaminant levels exceeded EPA limits.
A health-based violation means a water system exceeded the EPA's Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for a specific substance — such as lead, arsenic, nitrates, or coliform bacteria. These violations indicate a potential risk to drinking water safety.
Some areas rely on private wells rather than public water systems. Private wells are not tracked in the EPA database. You may also try a nearby ZIP code, as water system service areas don't always align exactly with ZIP code boundaries.
No EPA violations on record is a good sign, but it doesn't guarantee water safety. Some contaminants may not be tested for, and violations only reflect issues that were detected and reported. For the most accurate information, request a Consumer Confidence Report from your local water utility.
