STEERING Mar 18, 2026
My vehicle just turned 10 years old. It has a little more than 66,000 miles on it and very well maintained. It was operating fine with no issues up until the day I went to get into it last Friday. I started it up without issue, put it into drive and found that could not steer it. I actually had to have it put on a car carrier and taken to a foreign auto mechanic, who told me that I needed a completely new rack and pinion, my vehicle is not drivable. This should have been avoided had Land Rover checked the vehicle over when they were supposed to have done a complete service check on my vehicle in 2023 we combined two service checks into one as I live 2.5 hours from them. To me this is a poorly designed system made of aluminum that is highly corrosive and I am lucky not to have been killed had my vehicle done this while I was driving and had a bolt break off. This is definitely a high safety issue.

My 2016 Jaguar Land Rover Discovery Sport is displaying a CHECK ENGINE light. After having it seen by mechanics I'm told the Turbo-Manifold is faulty-CRACKED-and must be replaced, not safe to drive. It demonstrates by having noxious fumes enter the cabin, causing ill effects-not operable subject to dire illness. Should be part of RECALL. Please advise. STEERING Jan 10, 2026
Backing out of a driveway. Stopping and put the car in drive. Started to drive. Turned the steering wheel and heard a metal crunch. Steering failed because the bolts that hold electric motor attached to the steering mechanism sheered. Broke off from the mount. A very dangerous situation. Could have hit other cars as there was no control.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM Sep 30, 2025
I own a 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport (VIN [XXX] ). The vehicle was sold with InControl Remote features (remote lock/unlock, vehicle status, emergency SOS). These no longer function because the Telematics Control Unit (TCU) relies on the obsolete 2G/3G T-Mobile network. Since U.S. carriers shut down 2G/3G, the TCU cannot connect, leaving me without remote access or emergency SOS. Jaguar Land Rover acknowledges this but refuses to provide a 4G retrofit, unlike other automakers who offered upgrades or goodwill fixes when 2G/3G sunset occurred. Crankshaft pulley and Crankshaft had a manufactured defect that caused the pulley to brake into pieces while standing at a stop intersection, multiple pieces of metal were projected towards the radiator, water pump, passenger wheel, serpentine belt, battery and other components causing considerable damage and left the vehicle inoperable. The repairs were substantial and required multiple parts to be replaced due to a low quality part (crankshaft and pulley) during the vehicle's assembly, among some of them were a new Crankshaft pulley, radiator and retainers, and serpentine wheel. The total cost for the damage including parts, labor and secondary services (towing) were in excess of $3,700.00 (Three thousand seven hundred dollars). The mechanics that performed the services strongly advised and encouraged that the manufacturer were contacted to arrange for refund and awareness of the defect in the parts involved. We proceeded to contact the local dealership and service in Frisco Texas and they denied relief stating that the vehicle was out of warranty, although they had full knowledge that defective parts are not within the scope of warranty but inherent risks that need to be addressed for the customers. Given the lack of relief, I proceeded to notify the NHTSA of this issue for further investigation and possible force of a recall to obtain relief of all customers that may be impacted.
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE May 27, 2025
The contact owns a 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport. The contact stated that while his wife was driving approximately 40 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated his wife had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the high-pressure fuel pump was failing and needed to be replaced. The contact was informed by the mechanic that there was a recall related to the failure, NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V490000 (Fuel System, Gasoline), and referred the contact to a dealer. The contact called a local dealer and was informed that the VIN was not included in the recall. The contact called the manufacturer and was informed that the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 75,432.
STEERING Dec 20, 2024
The steering was completely lost, and the car was not controllable. Land Rover is aware of the problem and a recall was made in the UK, but not the USA. Service Dept report: No power steering, no warning on dash. Found that power steering assist electric motor is no longer bolted to steering rack, all 3 ALUMINUM bolts holding motor to rack have sheared off. Can move motor side to side at rack will likely need completely new rack and programming. Estimated cost of $7500. The car is used on streets and highways, never on off road or adverse terrain. At 65 MPH and loss of steering, this is a life dangerous event for anyone/ other cars on the road. Land Rover knows of the problem, but because they do not have an official recall from your agency, they said they would not take any action until you direct them to do so. I encourage you to take immediate action to prevent possible deaths. [XXX] [XXX] cell: [XXX] home: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

the driver's side from door latch is not operating correctly. the driver's side front door opens when the car is in motion. this happened in a parking lot while trying to leave the lot. we may have been going about 15mph. the door latch is not working at all now. the door will not stay closed at all. there is a current recall for the same issue but Land Rover says that my vin number is not included in the recall. Maybe a larger recall needs to be issued.
POWER TRAIN Feb 26, 2024
In early February, from a stop, I made right turn and the car just coasted and a "gear box fault" warning message appeared. I was fortunate enough that no one was behind me and I was able to coast into an empty parking lot right around the turn where I shut off the car. I started the car and it drove fine. I carefully drove it home. I saw other incidents of this "gear box fault" happening to other drivers by searching that on the internet, including someone driving on a major highway. I had the car towed to the dealer since I certainly believed this could easily have been an accident if there was someone behind me. The dealer indicated the car needed a new transmission. My car has under 56,000 miles and the warranty I had purchased ran out Oct. 2023. The company has declined to provide any assistance with the transmission cost due to vehicle age and warranty.

1. Gear shifter module. 2. Gear shifter remained stuck in drive and wouldn’t not go into neutral/park/reverse etc. Had I not been able to keep my foot on the brake and cut my car off while it was stuck in drive I would’ve crashed and/or hit an object or pedestrian. 3. My vehicle was towed to the Land Rover dealership who replaced the gear shifter module which was costly. 4. Yes the repairs were done at the Land Rover dealership in my area and it is now working in proper order with a new gear shifter module. 5. No warning signs showed on the dash and the vehicle would not allow me to use the emergency parking brake. The incident happened at a gas station in my area on December 20, 2023 at approximately 8:23 am.

The timing chain broke on an uphill and evidently ruined the entire engine. I was stuck in the middle of a 2 lane road with no shoulder on a hill. I had to direct traffic for 45 minutes to avoid any crashes or my car being rear ended. Repair will cost more than the car is currently worth. Seems to be a known issue. It was inspected by Land Rover Cincinnati. Check engine light came on 2.5 days prior to the incident - called Land Rover Service and I was instructed to "tighten the gas cap and wait a few days."

I checked the car for a pre trip inspection, and noticed the oil dipstick smelled of gas. Towed it to a service center where they were not able to confirm what was the cause as there are no warning lights and fuel injectors tested good. They drained and flushed oil, but the issue did not resolve. Concerned this issue is the same issue as other cars of the same model but different year have been recalled for, I am reporting the issue.

At 59,900 miles on a 2016 Discovery Sport that has never been in a collision and maintained by LandRover Dealership, the Left front brake line blew while my 22 year old medical student son was driving the car. Fortunately he was "in-town" and was going about 20 mph when he suddenly lost brake power and was able to stop the car by gearing down and without accident. Car towed to LandRover Dealership and L front brake line replaced for $900. Defect in brake line appears to be where upper part of brake hose was compressioned joined to metallic fitting. This defect would have escaped any inspection, and did. Contacted LandRover North America to report and ask if they would consider help with reimbursement for this manufacturing defect...which they would not: " Land Rover North America is unable to reimburse paid repairs..." Owners of LandRover Discovery Sports and other cars that use this brake line: BEWARE !!!! Imagine you or one of your kids suddenly losing brake capacity driving on the freeway !!!!! This sudden loss of brake function could have been deadly for the driver, occupant, and of course other folks on the roadway. Potentially Deadly Brake Line Manufacturing Defect in LandRover Discovery Sport 2016 with less than 60,000 miles !!!!!

I bought a Discovery Sports SUV from West Columbia Land Rover Dealership located at 12500 New Car Drive, Clarksville, Maryland 21029- USA. In May of 2019 when I bought it the odometer reading was 023984 miles, as of now over 4+years since I bought it the odometer reading is just about 40K. I was told by the salesperson [XXX] that the car has gone through 400-point inspection, and it is as good as a new car. Brakes, tires all are like new, and the engine is also like new. In October of 2020, after getting routine service, the car started making noise on the right side. I called and was asked to bring the car in. My home is close to 25 miles away from this Jim Coleman dealership. I drove this car at 20 miles an hour. When I reached the dealership,[XXX] from the Service department drove my car. This is what he said, "I would not allow my wife to drive this car." When the car was inspected, he told me that the wheel bearing was bad. I was really angry that I have not even driven that much - odometer reading on 10/26/2020 - 32037, since I bought it and the wheel bearing is bad already, given I was told that the car is as good as new. Fast forward to my latest visit on 4/15/2023 with odometer reading at 039738 - almost two and a half years since the last wheel bearing was fixed (as the record states) I am told again that wheel bearing is bad on the same side. I tried dealing with the dealership as well as Tata Motors Customer care and they have washed their hands with my complaint. I think Tata Motors, which owns the company, has failed to disclose this issue with this model. This can result in an accident and lost life. Below is the link to complaints I found on the net for the same issue. https://www.discoverysport.net/threads/front-bearing-out-at-51-000-miles.12604/ I hope someone can look into this issue before it results in some serious accidents resulting in severe injuries or lost lives. The shift gear is broken. It is stuck in drive, I cannot park, reverse, or put the vehicle in neutral. Because the gear shift is stuck in drive I had to crash the vehicle into a curb, as not to hurt myself or others. Once resting against the curb I had to quickly get out and disconnect the battery, otherwise my car would have continued driving. The gear shift remains broken and in drive. Research shows that this is a common and persistent issue with Land Rovers; one that isn’t disclosed during purchase. This was a considerable safety hazard for me and my family.

POWER TRAIN Dec 26, 2022
I recently purchased this 2016 Land Rover Discovery. Last weekend, I was driving the car. After turning into my parking lot, the car was unable to be driven. There was no forewarning or notice that something was going wrong. The car could only move straight forward and backward, the steering wheel would not turn the front wheels of the car. Upon closer inspection by a mechanic, it was determined that the bolts in the steering column sheered off. I do have pictures of the bolts I'll try to attach. Apparently, these bolts are aluminum and become weakened over time. I also found out this is a common problem in this year Land Rover Discovery which I learned after some research online. Thankfully, I was not driving at the time the incident occurred but this is clearly a safety hazard. I contacted Land Rover to see if they were replacing these bolts, they are not. They said that I should call the party who sold me the car but this is clearly an engineering problem. I have not taken the car off-road or done any kind of unusual driving. The car was maintained as shown by the CarFax report. Multiple representatives said it is not a recall, and they are technically correct on the Discovery model. There is a recall on the 2014-2016 Range Rovers for the exact same problem as the Discovery - the bolts in the steering column will sheer. Thankfully, no one was harmed in my case but if someone with one of these vehicles were to be on the interstate or at a high rate of speed and lost the entire ability to steer without warning, someone is going to be seriously injured or killed.
ENGINE Oct 21, 2022
I experienced three incidents attributable to a malfunction of the turbocharger integrated exhaust manifold. The first two occasions the vehicle suddenly and inexplicably lost power slowing to approximately 5 mph. Acceleration only made the engine rev up but did not increase power. No prior indications from the function of engine nor any warning indicators activated at the time the first two incidents occurred. I had only owned the vehicle for two to three months when the first incident occurred. Being my first experience with a vehicle equipped with paddles affixed to the steering wheel and not having any prior warnings I presumed I had inadvertently and incorrectly touched the paddles. The loss of power lasted only minutes but rendered the vehicle unable to maintain speed to safely maneuver through and move from travel lanes. The most recent occurrence happened while traveling at highway speed on an interstate. This time the vehicle again immediately lost power and my speed abruptly dropped to about 30 mph and for the first time illuminated the check engine light. Fortunately, traffic was light and I was within 1 mile of the next exit. I was able to maneuver to the shoulder and eventually exited the highway. The vehicle recovered function and I travelled approximately 10 miles back to a Land Rover Dealership. Diagnostic tests pulled code DTC P0299 and recommended that the turbocharger be replaced. There is currently a class action lawsuit pending against Land Rover vehicles for this problem which has been reported to be a common occurrence in the 2012-2017 Evoque, 2015-2017 Discovery Sport, and 2013-2015 LR2. In 2020 4 complaints were filed with NHTSA (11342410, 11342277, 11375748, and 11375786) regarding turbocharger failure and sudden loss of power. My vehicle has been parked at a dealership since July 8, 2021 because the unforeseeable loss of power renders the vehicle unreliable and at risk of accident and injury.

The contact owns a 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power, and she heard a grinding noise coming from the engine compartment. The contact stated that the gear box fault, HDC Not Available System Fault, and Stability Control Not Available - Drive with Care messages were displayed. The contact pulled off of the road, stopped and shifted into park(P) but did not turn off the vehicle. The contact stated that the transmission failure and flashing warning lights were intermittent the following days. The contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission solenoid and valve harness needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The contact had the vehicle towed to the same dealer. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 24,800.

The brake pedal started to feel spongy, then the car started firing alarms about low brake fluid pressure. Made it home and upon inspection found the Right Passenger Front brake line had ruptured and was spraying fluid everywhere. This is super dangerous luckily we didn't wreck. Upon research, it appears earlier models of Land Rovers had a recall for this exact issue however Land Rover mentioned that my year (2016) was not a part of the recall. Well, it looks like it should be, this will kill someone someday. I replaced the part myself and the car is back on the road. This is not a wear item and should not be failing only a few years after purchase. Official Land Rover part replaced = LR135811 Brake Hydraulic Hose

In July 2019 the 2016 Land Rover Discovery sport experienced a failure of the crank shaft pulley that completely destroyed the engine. At time of failure in 2019 car has approximately 96,500 miles. A claim was filed with Land Rover which was denied because they deemed the crank pulley a serviceable part that should have been maintained by car owner. The engine was subsequently replaced with used engine assembly with 60k miles and car placed back into service. January 2022 the same car experienced a crank pully failure on the engine that was replaced in July 2019. Car currently at Land Rover Dealership undergoing forensic evaluation.

The lock actuators in my vehicle (except for the driver door and tailgate) have all failed. It started when my 2016 Land Rover was at approximately 118,000 miles, with the rear driver side door failing first. Then in the last 30 days, the rear passenger side door and the front passenger side door fail to lock or get stuck locked. This causes several safety hazards to include the inability to egress from the vehicle in the case of an emergency. Additionally, I am obviously concerned about vehicle theft. There have been no warning lamps, messages, or other indicators of the issue prior to the failure, the locks just progressively stopped working. I haven't yet had the component inspected by anyone, but I am upset that my safety has been put in danger by these faulty systems and that I will now have to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket to get it fixed. It must be a frequent problem with these systems because some how three out of the five locks on my vehicle all went out over the course of two months on a relatively low mileage vehicle.

The problem was reported to the dealership on three occasions and they could not find a solution they oiled the locking system and it sat overnight and in the morning they were able to shut it. No warnings at all. Similar recall on the Range Rover: Land Rover is recalling about 65,385 of its 2013-2016 Range Rover and 2014-2016 Range Rover Sport SUVs because doors that appear to be closed may not actually be latched, raising the risk that occupants could fall out, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

THE TURBO CHARGER IN MY 2016 LR DISCOVERY SPORT IS BAD AND NOW NEEDS REPLACED, OTHERWISE THERE IS MINIMAL ACCELERATION (ACCELERATION WORSE THAN OF A SMALL COMPACT 4-CYLINDER CAR). IT IS ALSO VERY NOISY DUE TO THE BROKEN PART. IT ONLY HAS 60K MILES ON IT. LEARNED FROM A RESPECTED AUTO BODY SHOP THAT SERVICES HIGH END VEHICLES THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM.
