ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL
Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain model year 2003-2006 Dodge and Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vans manufactured June 30, 2003, to August 31, 2006. The instrument cluster on the affected vehicles fails to illuminate the BRAKE warning lamp in the instrument cluster during the vehicle start up bulb-function check. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 105, "Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems."
Remedy: DVUSA will notify owners, and DVUSA and Dodge dealers will correct the instrument cluster software, as necessary, free of charge. An interim notification was sent to owners on January 6, 2017. A second notice will be mailed to owners once the remedy becomes available. The recall began on July 27, 2017. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-770-705-2070.

THESE LIFTS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 403, "PLATFORM LIFT SYSTEM ACCESSIBLE FOR MOTOR VEHICLES." THE ANTI-STOW INTERLOCK MAY NOT DETECT THE PRESENCE OF A WHEELCHAIR OR MOBILITY AID USER. THE PRESSURE SENSING SWITCH THAT DETECTS THE PRESENCE OF WEIGHT ON THE PLATFORM WAS NOT ADJUSTED TO THE NECESSARY SENSITIVITY LEVEL. THE LIFT COULD STOW EVEN THOUGH SOMEONE OR SOMETHING IS STILL ON THE LIFT.

SPRINTER IS RECALLING 10 MY 2001-2006 DODGE AND FREIGHTLINER 2500 AND 3500 VEHICLES. THE WELDING SEAM BETWEEN THE BRACKET AND STEERING COLUMN OF AFFECTED SPARE PARTS DOES NOT MEET DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS. THE RESULT OF AN OUT OF SPECIFICATION WELDING SEAM IS THAT THE STEERING COLUMN MAY DETACH FROM ITS INTERIOR VEHICLE MOUNTING BRACKET.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMNS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE FEBRUARY 16, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SPRINTER AT 843-695-5057.

The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Sprinter 2500. The contact received notification of Emissions Recall T21 Reprogram Engine Control Unit. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power and carbon monoxide fumes were coming into the cabin of the travel trailer and setting off the carbon monoxide alarm. Police have also warned the contact that there would be a fine for black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the dealer informed the contact that they were not equipped with the tools or had technicians that could perform the recall repair. The dealer referred the contact to a Mercedes-Benz dealer. However, the Mercedes Benz dealer informed the contact that they only perform recall repairs on Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case but could not get a dealer to perform the recall repair. The failure mileage was approximately 52,000.

VEHICLE WAS RECALLED FOR AN EMISSION CONTROL DEVISE ISSUE. I PHONED THE DODGE DEALER WHERE I HAD MY VAN SERVICED A FEW TIMES TO SCHEDULE THE RECALL WORK. THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID THEY NO LONGER SERVICE THE 2006 DODGE/MERCEDES SPRINTERS. I WENT AHEAD AND HAD MY VEHICLE SMOG TESTED. IT PASSED. I MAILED MY REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT. THIS IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE. MY VEHICLE PASSED THE STRICT CA SMOG REQUIREMENTS. THERE IS NO REASON TO RECALL MY VAN OR HOLD UP MY REGISTRATION AS AN "INCOMPLETE RENEWAL".

THE LEFT DRIVERS SIDE ELECTRIC WINDOW HAS A BROKEN PIECE OF NYLON/PLASTIC THAT IS ABOUT 11/2" X 1/2", THAT IS HELD IN PLACE BY A RIVET THAT APPEARS TO LOOK LIKE A NAIL HEAD ON THE METAL WINDOW REGULATOR ARM. THIS FLIMSY PLASTIC PART BROKE INTO TWO PIECES WHICH ALLOWS THE ARM OF THE WINDOW REGULATOR TO POP OUT OF THE TRACK BELOW THE WINDOW, AND THE WINDOW FALLS DOWN AND STAYS OPEN. WHEN THIS HAPPENS IT CREATES NOISE, ALLOWS BAD WEATHER TO ENTER THE VEHICLE, AND CREATES A VERY DISTRACTING SITUATION FOR DRIVING, ESPECIALLY ON THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM. THERE IS NO FIX FOR THIS SMALL PART ONLY A NEW REGULATOR WITH THE SAME FLIMSY PIECE OF PLASTIC. THE WINDOW REGULATOR COSTS BETWEEN $219 AND $224 PLUS TAX AND SHIPPING. THE COST TO INSTALL IT IS ANOTHER 200+ DOLLARS. THIS REGULATOR SUFFERS FROM POOR DESIGN AND SHOULD NOT BREAK ON A VEHICLE (RV) THAT IS NOT USED LIKE PERSONAL TRANSPORTATION VEHICLE. MY WINDOW OPENED SLOWLY AT 70MPH ON THE FREEWAY.

I BOUGHT THIS VAN NEW IN APRIL 2006. THE VAN CAME WITH AN E.O.M. ROOF A/C WHICH IS THE CAUSE FOR THE VEHICLE STALLING WHEN DECELERATING. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED WAS ABOUT 2 MONTHS AFTER WE BOUGHT THE VAN. I REPORTED THIS INCIDENT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT DODGE WAS AWARE OF IT AND WOULD ISSUE A RECALL AS SOON AS IT HAS A FIX - IT NEVER DID. THE CURRENT ODOMETER READING IS 35,125 MILES. THE VAN WAS MOSTLY DRIVEN SHORT DISTANCES AS I USE IT MAINLY TO TRANSPORT MY WHEELCHAIR BOUND DAUGHTER TO AND FROM DOCTORS AND HOSPITALS VISITS.TIME WENT BY UNTIL IT HAPPENED AGAIN. IT APPEARED THAT THE STALLING, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY SHUT OFF WHEN THE ROOF A/C IS RUNNING WHILE THE ENGINE IS AT A CERTAIN TEMPERATURE. I CONTACTED DODGE WHICH TOLD ME THAT MY WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. IT WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY $1000 TO INSTALL THE "REAR A/C IDLE CUTOUT MODULE". AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCHES, I FOUND OUT THAT THERE WAS A DODGE SERVICE BULLETIN # 24-001-2009 DATED APRIL 24, 2009 WITH SUBJECT: IDLE INSTABILITY - REAR A/C IDLE CUTOUT MODULE INSTALLATION. RESONATOR FAILED AT 15,200 MILES CAUSING A DANGEROUS SITUATION. MY SPRINTER WAS PURCHASED FROM MAXWELL DODGE IN AUSTIN TX ON MY BEHALF BY SPORTSMOBILE IN AUSTIN WHO DID AN RV CONVERSION ON IT. THE NEAREST AUTHORIZED DEALER FROM MY HOME IS MOSS BROTHERS DODGE IN SAN BERNARDINO CA THEY REPLACED THE RESONATOR ON 9/18/09 WITH MILEAGE AT L5,308. WITH REPORTS OF MULTIPLE FAILURES, INCLUDING FAILURES OF A NEWER REVISION, I AM CONCERNED FOR MY SAFETY AND OTHERS. MY VAN IS USED EXCLUSIVELY FOR CAMPING, USUALLY IN REMOTE MOUNTAIN AREAS WITH NARROW STEEP ROADS, OFTEN WITHOUT GUARD RAILS WHICH DO NOT HAVE AREAS TO PULL OVER OR PASS. THIS WOULD ENDANGER LIVES IN THE EVENT OF A RESONATOR FAILURE WHICH MAKES THE VEHICLE INCAPABLE OF MOVING ON AN INCLINE AS WELL AS DANGEROUS ON A FREEWAY WHEN IT SUDDENLY LOSES POWER. IN MY RESEARCH I FOUND AN ALUMINUM RESONATOR WHICH ELIMINATES THE PROBLEM. MOSS BROTHERS DODGE TOLD ME THEY HAVE INSTALLED THIS RESONATOR, HOWEVER THE CUSTOMER HAS TO PROVIDE IT AND SIGN A WAIVER BECAUSE IT DOES NOT HAVE A FILTER. IF A PROBLEM OCCURS WITH THE TURBO WHICH IS DETERMINED TO BE CAUSED BY PARTICLES THAT GOT THROUGH THE SYSTEM, IT WOULD NOT BE COVERED BY THE WARRANTY. THE RETURN SPRING AND LOCKUP HOUSING IS MADE OF PLASTIC WHICH BECOMES DISFIGURED AND IS RENDERED INOPERABLE AND THEREFORE UNSAFE, LEAVING THE FRONT OCCUPANTS UNKNOWINGLY UNPROTECTED. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 DODGE SPRINTER 2500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN HE ATTEMPTED TO USE THE VEHICLE, HE NOTICED A FIRE HAD TAKEN PLACE IN THE CABIN OF THE AROUND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND AN INVESTIGATOR WAS SENT OUT TO LOOK AT THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FAILURE WAS AN ISOLATED INCIDENT AND THEY DID NOT KNOW WHAT CAUSED THE FIRE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 30,000.

FAULTY TURBO RESONATOR ON A MOTORHOME DODGE SPRINTER 2006 THE PROBLEM WITH THE POWER RESONATOR IS THAT THE SPEED IS SUDDENLY REDUCED AND OTHER VEHICLE BEHIND MUST BRAKE OR CHANGE IS SHORT NOTICE DUE TO THE REDUCED SPEED FORM AN AVERAGE OF 65 MILES TO 20 MILES IN NO TIME BECAUSE OF THE POWER FAILURE. I OWN A 2006 DODGE SPRINTER (IT'S ACTUALLY A WINNEBAGO VIEW MOTOR HOME MOUNTED ON THE DODGE SPRINTER (MERCEDES SPRINTER) CHASSIS. THE SPRINTER HAS A PLASTIC PART KNOWN AS A TURBO RESONATOR TO DAMPEN THE WHINE OF THE TURBOCHARGER. THIS PART HAS FAILED THREE TIMES IN A LITTLE OVER 20,000 MILES. I'M NOW PARKED AND WAITING FOR A REPLACEMENT PART SO THAT I CAN CONTINUE DRIVING HOME FROM A VACATION. I'VE DECIDED TO TRY TO REPLACE THE PART MYSELF, RATHER THAN DRIVE WITH LIMITED POWER AND SPEED TO A DODGE SPRINTER DEALER ABOUT 100 MILES AWAY. NOT ALL DODGE DEALERS SERVICE SPRINTERS. THE PART HAS ALWAYS BEEN REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. BUT TO MY KNOWLEDGE DODGE AND MERCEDES HAVE NOT CORRECTED THE WEAKNESS IN THIS PART. IT FAILS UNPREDICTABLY. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THERE'S AN IMMEDIATE LOSS OF POWER AND SPEED. THIS WOULD BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY. LEAVING JEKYLL ISLAND, GA., ON MONDAY, I HAD TO CLIMB A STEEP GRADE TO CROSS A BRIDGE. I COULD ONLY DRIVE 30 MPH. ON FLAT HIGHWAY, I COULD ONLY RUN 50 TO 60 MPH ON A HIGHWAY WITH A POSTED SPEED OF 65. FROM EVERYTHING I READ ON SPRINTER FORUMS, THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS. PLEASE INSIST THAT DODGE AND MERCEDES CORRECT THIS PROBLEM BEFORE LIVES ARE LOST. FRANKLY, THE PROBLEM IS SO COMMONLY KNOWN AMONG SPRINTER OWNERS, I'M SURPRISED THERE ALREADY HASN'T BEEN A RECALL. THE DEALERS CANNOT FIX BECAUSE THEY CAN'T "DUPLICATE" THE ISSUE. ALLEN SAMUELS TRIED VERY HARD FOR 4 DAYS, LOOKED CLOSELY, LISTENED TO ONLINE SPRINTER BOARD TROUBLESHOOTING. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 DODGE SPRINTER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A FUEL LEAK IN THE FUEL FILTER. THE FAILURE CAUSED DIESEL FUEL TO LEAK ONTO THE ENGINE AND THE GROUND. THE DEALER ATTEMPTED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE, BUT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT IF THE FUEL FILTER WERE CHANGED WITH O-RINGS SUPPLIED WITH THE FILTER, THE FAILURE WOULD STILL OCCUR. THE WATER SENSOR WAS CHANGED WITH O-RINGS, WHICH WERE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WITHOUT THIS SENSOR, ANY O-RINGS WOULD NOT BE SUFFICIENT ENOUGH TO REMEDY THE FAILURE.
