IT HAS BEEN REPAIRED, BUT I WAS INFORMED THAT EXCESSIVE RUST IS IN VARIOUS LOCATIONS ON THE REAR OF THE FRAME AND WILL NEED TO BE WATCHED CLOSELY. KEEP IN MIND THAT THESE CROSS MEMBERS SUPPORT THE FUEL TANK AND IF ONE WOULD BREAK, IT LOOKS LIKE IT COULD CASSETTE FUEL TANK TO FALL OFF. THE TRUCK HAS 100,500 MILES ON IT, WHICH IS NOT EXCESSIVE FOR THE YEAR. THE TRUCK SPENT MOST OF ITS LIFE IN MICHIGAN, BUT NOW RESIDES IN ILLINOIS. I HAVE READ SEVERAL FORUMS HAVING THE SAME COMPLAINTS FOR THE 99-2007 MODEL YEAR VEHICLES. I AM SURE THERE IS ALSO A LACK OF PROPER PAINT APPLICATION AND EVEN POOR STEEL THAT IS LIKELY CAUSING THE ISSUE. JUST AS TOYOTA HAS DONE, CHEVY SHOULD OFFER A RECALL FOR EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE FRAME. THE TOYOTA TUNDRA RECALL OFFERS A NEW FRAME FOR ANY TUNDRA WITH A RUST HOLE 10MM OR LARGER. WHY ISN'T THE NHTSA INVESTIGATING THIS FURTHER? I PRESSED ON THE BRAKES AND FELT ONE SET BLOW OUT, PRESSED HARDER TO COMPENSATE AND FELT THE REMAINING SET BLOW OUT. THE PEDAL THEN WENT TO THE FLOOR RESULTING IN A TOTAL LOSS OF BRAKING. THE BRAKE LIGHT DID NOT COME ON (NO REASON FOR IT TO?). LUCKILY I HAD A TRAILER CONNECTED WHICH HAD WORKING ELECTRIC BRAKES AND I WAS ABLE TO MANUALLY ACTIVATE THOSE BRAKES. LATER THAT DAY WHILE MOVING THE VEHICLE IN MY YARD, I USED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WHICH IMMEDIATELY FAILED. INSPECTION OF THE BRAKE LINES REVEALED MASSIVE CORROSION ON ALL OF THE LINES AND WILL REQUIRE COMPLETE REPLACEMENT. INSPECTION OF THE EMERGENCY BRAKE REVEALED THE LINE WAS COATED IN PLASTIC EXCEPT IN SOME AREAS. THOSE AREAS WERE TOTALLY CORRODED RESULTING IN THE CABLE BRAKING IN ONE OF THOSE AREAS. SO IN ONE PEDAL ACTION, BOTH FRONT AND BACK BRAKES CATASTROPHICALLY FAILED. AND IN THE SAME DAY, ALL 3 SYSTEMS FAILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE AND THEY REQUESTED THAT THE VEHICLE BE TOWED IN AND HAVE A DIAGNOSTIC TEST RUN (AT THE VEHICLE OWNERS EXPENSE), HOWEVER CHEVROLET HAD NO PROGRAM IN PLACE AND WOULD NOT COVER ANY OF THE REPAIRS NO MATTER WHAT THE OUTCOME OF THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST... I OPTED TO REPAIR ALL THE BREAK LINES MYSELF TO AVOID THE THE EXTRA COST OF A TOW AND DIAGNOSTIC TEST THAT WOULD HAVE NO OUTCOME OTHER THAN A REPORT TO CHEVROLET AT A LARGE EXPENSE TO ME. THIS WILL RESULT IN A VIRGINIA STATE VEHICLE SAFETY INSPECTION FAILURE BECAUSE A SEAT MUST BE SECURE OR IT CONSTITUTES A DANGER. ALTHOUGH THE VEHICLE IS A 2000 CHEVY SILVERADO 1500 SERIES LT EXTENDED CAB IT ONLY HAS 13,000 MILES ON IT. THEREFORE, IT ISN'T DRIVEN MUCH INDICATING TO ME THAT THE CONDITION RESULTED FROM DEFECTIVE MATERIAL USED IN THE MANUFACTURING OF THE SEAT OR IMPROPER MANUFACTURING ITSELF. I BELIEVE THAT IF IT WERE FROM IMPROPER MANUFACTURING AS OPPOSED TO DEFECTIVE MATERIALS THEN THE PROBLEM WOULD HAVE SHOWN UP AT A MUCH EARLIER DATE REGARDLESS OF THE LOW MILEAGE. I APPROACHING A STOP LIGHT AT AN INTERSECTION AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR WITH LITTLE TO NO STOPPING POWER.I WAS FORCED TO DRIVE OFF THE ROAD INTO A DIRT EMBANKMENT.I WAS LUCKY IT WAS 5:45AM AND LIGHT TRAFFIC AS I WOULD HAVE HIT ANY VEHICLE IF THERE WAS ONE STOPPED IN FRONT OF ME.THE CAUSE OF THE LOSS OF BRAKES WAS RUSTED FRONT BRAKE LINE THAT BURST WITHOUT WARNING.THESE TRUCKS SHOULD BE RECALLED AS MY MECHANIC HAS REPAIRED MANY CHEVY/GMC TRUCKS OF THIS VINTAGE WITH THE SAME RUSTED BRAKE LINE PROBLEMS. *JS

BRAKE LINES RUSTED OUT. I WAS COMING UP TO A LIGHT AND STARTED TO SLOW DOWN AND NEXT THING I KNEW MY BRAKE PEDAL WAS PRESSED TO THE FLOOR AND I WAS STILL COASTING DOWN THE ROAD. THERE WAS A BOX TRUCK JUST AHEAD OF ME AND LUCKILY HE WAS IN THE TURNING LANE SO THAT LEFT A LANE OPEN FOR ME. THERE WASN'T ANY CROSS TRAFFIC COMING AND I BLEW THREW THE RED LIGHT AND WAS ABLE TO COME TO A STOP AT A NEARBY PARKING LOT. DOES NOT MAKE SENSE..MY WIFE'S FORD ESCAPE IS CLOSE TO SAME YEAR, NOT A SPECK OF RUST...MUST BE BAD MATERIAL OR BAD ROUTING...OR BETTER MATERIAL AND PROTECTION FROM ELEMENTS ON ESCAPE...IS THERE A RECALL FOR THIS? OUR CHEVY SILVERADO TRUCK, 2000 MAKE OF YEAR, HAS IGNITION ISSUES. IT IS HARD TO GET THE KEY TO TURN IN THE IGNITION, REQUIRING US TO EITHER JIGGLE THE IGNITION PLATE OR TURN THE KEY TO THE OTHER SIDE AND INSERT IT THAT WAY. WE HAVE NOTICED THAT WE CAN TAKE THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION AND THE ENGINE WILL CONTINUE TO RUN. WE HAVE ASKED OUR GM DEALERSHIP IN THE PAST ABOUT REPAIRS, AND WERE TOLD IT WOULD COST US $2000 TO FIX. WE WEREN'T TOO CONCERNED ABOUT IT UNTIL WE SAW THE CONTROVERSY WITH THE CHEVY COBALT (A VEHICLE WE ALSO OWN), AND NOW WONDER IF THE CHEVY SILVERADO CAN ALSO BE ADDED TO THIS LIST OF RECALLS OR REPAIRS. CAME TO A TRAFFIC LIGHT PULLING A TRAVEL TRAILER - PEDAL WENT TO FLOOR - NO BRAKES AT ALL. THE TRAILER ELECTRIC BRAKES WAS THE ONLY WAY TO SLOW THE DOWN. LINES ARE RUSTED OUT. *TR
I WAS TRAVELING DOWN A ROAD AT 20 MPH AND WENT TO APPLY MY BRAKES AS WE WERE APPROACHING A RED LIGHT. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT RIGHT TO THE FLOOR WITHOUT WARNING AND I WAS INVOLVED IN A 4 CAR ACCIDENT CAUSED BY A TOTAL BRAKE SYSTEM FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE GARAGE AND A MAJORITY OF THE BRAKE LINES HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO RUSTING. THE BRAKE LINES RUSTED AT THE INTERSECTION TO THE BRAKE MODULE MID VEHICLE SO WHEN THE FRONT LINES FAILED, THE PRESSURE BOOST TO THE REAR LINES CAUSED THEM TO ALSO FAIL. SO THE CONCEPT OF DUAL BRAKE SYSTEMS WAS DEFEATED DUE TO A SINGLE POINT FAILURE PROBLEM. ALSO, THE BRAKE FLUID SATURATED THE REAR BRAKE ROTORS SO THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS NON FUNCTIONAL. THE VEHICLE WAS A 2000 SILVERADO WHICH WAS A $35000 VEHICLE WHERE THE BRAKE LINES LASTED 7 YEARS. I ALSO OWN A 1987 S-10 PICKUP USED IN THE SAME ENVIRONMENT AND THE BRAKE LINES DO NOT EXHIBIT THE CORROSION SEEN ON MY SILVERADO BRAKE LINES. OBVIOUSLY GM USED SUBSTANDARD BRAKE LINES IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE 2000 SILVERADO. I OWN TWO VEHICLES MADE BY THE SAME COMPANY AND USED IN THE SAME ENVIRONMENT. THEREFORE, IT IS NOT AN ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE THAT CAUSES THE BRAKE LINE FAILURE. THE OFFICIAL COMMENT FROM GM THAT RUSTED BRAKE LINES ARE NOT A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE THE VEHICLE CAN BE STOPPED WITH A DUAL BRAKING SYSTEM IS INCORRECT BECAUSE WHEN THE RUSTED BRAKE LINES FAIL, BOTH BRAKING SYSTEMS FAIL AND THE VEHICLE CANNOT BE STOPPED SAFELY. *TR

THE CONTACT HAD TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED AND REPAIRED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE BRAKE LINES WERE RUSTED. THE BRAKE LINES WERE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 36,000. *TR
WAS BACKING BOAT TRAILER INTO WATER AND BRAKE PEDAL GOT VERY SOFT. NO ACCIDENT THE TRAILER WAS EMPTY AND THE TRUCK STOPPED. PULLED THE BOAT OUT OF THE WATER UP THE HILL, TRIED TO STOP ON FLAT GROUND AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. THE BRAKES WORKED SOMEWHAT, BUT NOW WELL. FOUND A BRAKE LINE RUSTED THROUGH NEAR THE LEFT REAR WHEEL, BRAKE FLOOD RUNNING OUT FREELY. WAS ABLE TO CLAMP OFF LINE AND LEAVE REMOVED TRAILER TO GET TRUCK TO A REPAIR SHOP. SEVERAL LINES LOOKED RUSTY AT THE TIME. A SECOND LINE HAS RUPTURED SINCE THEN. IT IS ONE THAT IS ON THE FRAME RAIL UNDER THE CAB. *TR
