FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:FILLER PIPE AND CAP
Bombardier Recreational Products Inc. (BRP) is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 Can-Am Spyder GS, RS, and RT series vehicles. The fuel cap may not fit onto the fuel tank filler neck, preventing it from sealing properly.
Remedy: BRP will notify owners and send them a replacement fuel cap, free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin in mid-January 2013. Owners may contact BRP AT 1-888-638-5397.

WHEN BRINGING A VEHICLE EQUIPPED WITH THE SE5 SEMI-AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION TO A FULL STOP, THE CLUTCH MAY REMAIN ENGAGED STALLING THE ENGINE. ONCE THE ENGINE IS STALLED, IT COULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO RE-START AND THE REAR WHEEL COULD BE BLOCKED.

THE CONNECTOR ON THE KEY SWITCH HARNESS MAY NOT BE LOCKED AND THE IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS MAY BE ROUTED TOO TIGHT. IN SOME SITUATIONS, THE CONNECTOR MAY UNPLUG.

The contact owns a 2010 Can-Am Spyder RT. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, the steering wheel became firm. The power steering and parking brake warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was approximately 15,000.

HAVE CALLED THE DEALER TWICE AND THEY DO NOT HAVE THE REPAIR PARTS REQUIRED. THE DEALER STATED THEY HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR AT LEAST 4 WEEKS FOR PARTS TO MAKE REQUIRED REPAIRS BUT HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY. THERE IS NO EXPECTED DATE WHEN THE DEALER WILL RECEIVE THE PARTS. THE RECALL LETTER STATES, "THIS CONDITION MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH POSSIBLY RESULTING IN INJURY OR DEATH." WHILE TRAVELING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ON INTERSTATE MOTORCYCLE SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING DROPPED THE SPEED FROM ABOUT 65MPH TO 40MPH. STEERING SYSTEM FAILED. DRIVERS IN BACK BRAKING HARD TO AVOID ME, TRYING TO GET TO SHOULDER BUT NOW THE TRAFFIC TO THE RIGHT IS TRAVELING TWICE AS FAST AS I AM. UNABLE TO GO FASTER DUE TO WHAT MANUFACTURER CALLS "LIMP HOME MODE". FINALLY GOT TRAFFIC IN RIGHT LANES TO SLOW TO ALLOW ME TO GET SAFELY TO SHOULDER. VERY HARROWING EXPERIENCE. I HAVE RIDDEN MOTORCYCLES FOR OVER 50 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER RIDDEN SUCH AN UNSAFE VEHICLE. THIS EXACT SCENARIO HAPPENED TWO MORE TIMES. CAN-AM SPYDERS WITH THE SEMI-AUTOMATIC "SE5" TRANSMISSION CAN LURCH FORWARD AND RAPIDLY DECELERATE WHEN THE THROTTLE IS MOSTLY OPEN AND THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT BUTTON IS PRESSED TO SHIFT TO THE NEXT HIGHER GEAR. OPENING THE THROTTLE FOR QUICK ACCELERATION, WHEN MERGING INTO HIGHWAY TRAFFIC, FOR INSTANCE, RESULTS IN FORCES THAT PUSH A RIDER'S BODY TOWARD THE REAR OF THE MOTORCYCLE. WHEN THIS PROBLEM OCCURS, THE TRANSMISSION DROPS TO NEUTRAL SUDDENLY AND FOR MORE SEVERAL SECONDS RESULTING IN THE RIDERS' BODIES BEING ACCELERATED FORWARD RAPIDLY--OPPOSITE THE ACCELERATING FORCES--IN AN UNSAFE MANNER THAN CAN RESULT IN NEAR EJECTION FROM THE MOTORCYCLE. ALSO, WITH THE TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL FOR SEVERAL SECONDS, THE MOTORCYCLE DECELERATES RAPIDLY, WHICH CAN RESULT IN A REAR-END COLLISION, ESPECIALLY GIVEN THAT THE DRIVER WAS INTENTIONALLY ACCELERATING QUICKLY FOR A MANEUVER SUCH AS MERGING OR A LANE CHANGE INTO FASTER TRAFFIC. THAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, USUALLY WHEN THE SPYDER IS COLD, I.E. WITHIN 5 MINUTES OF STARTUP. THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE HAS BEEN BETWEEN 27 AND 50 DEGREES, THOUGH I DO NOT KNOW IF THE ACTUAL AIR TEMPERATURE CONTRIBUTES TO THE ISSUE.

TL- THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 CAN- AM SPIDER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT TWO WEEKS AGO WHILE TRAVELING THE STEERING LOCKED AND THE ENGINE DIED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THIS CAN HAPPEN AT ANY SPEED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE IGNITION SWITCH FOR THE MOTORCYCLE. WHEN THERE IS TOO MUCH PRESSURE PLACED ON THE HANDLE BARS IT CAN CAUSE THE STEERING TO GO OUT AND THE ENGINE TO STALL. THE CONTACT WAS TOLD THERE WAS RECALL FOR ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING, WHICH DEALS WITH THE KEY SWITCH AND IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS. THE CAMPAIGN NUMBER IS 09V473000. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS BUT THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT LATER RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 10V232000 (POWER TRAIN: CLUTCH ASSEMBLY). WHILE AT THE DEALER FOR RECALL REPAIRS, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE BEARINGS WERE ALSO DEFECTIVE. THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE PART WAS UNAVAILABLE TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED SEVERAL TIMES TO NOTIFY THE MANUFACTURER; HOWEVER, THE TELEPHONE LINES CONTINUOUSLY REMAINED BUSY. THE CONTACT WAS DISPLEASED TO KNOW THAT THERE WAS A RECALL AND THE PART WAS NOT AVAILABLE, TO INCLUDE THE UNCERTAINTY OF THE ARRIVAL DATE FOR THE PART. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 CAN-AM SPIDER MOTORCYCLE. WHILE DRIVING AT 35 MPH ATTEMPTING TO STOP, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY DOWNSHIFTED FROM THIRD GEAR TO FIRST. THE VEHICLE THEN SURGED FORWARD SO THE CONTACT APPLIED MORE PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP IT. THE FAILURE OCCURRED TWICE. THE CONTACT CALLED THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE FAILURE WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED OR REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 610. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 640.

HAD TROUBLE PUTTING IT INTO NEUTRAL WHEN STOPPED. THIS HAPPENED FREQUENTLY (DAILY). COMING TO A STOP IT ACTED LIKE THE CLUTCH WAS NOT ENGAGING AND THEN THE ENGINE STOPPED. COULD NOT GET IT STARTED UNTIL I JUST HELD THE STARTER SWITCH, LET THE BIKE JERK ALONG AND THEN START. DEALER SAID IT WAS THE CERAMIC CLUTCH BEARINGS, AND THEY WOULD CHANGE THEM OUT WITH STEEL BEARINGS. ARE THEY ALL LIKE THIS? COULD FIND NO RECALL TO FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR
