Description of the Problem: •Component/system that failed: The engine starter, which is subject to an open recall issued September 23, 2025. The starter was not replaced during a service visit. The vehicle no longer exists due to the fire, but the VIN and service records are available for inspection. •Safety risk: The starter malfunction caused the vehicle to catch fire while parked, creating a serious safety risk to myself, my child, and others nearby. •Problem reproduction/confirmation: The fire and defect were confirmed by BMW’s inspection as originating from the starter irregularity tied to the recall. •Inspections: The vehicle was inspected by BMW North America’s engineering team after the fire, and insurance representatives confirmed the total loss. •Warning signs prior to failure: There were no warning lamps, messages, or symptoms indicating the starter defect before the fire. Additional context: The vehicle was serviced at an authorized BMW dealership on December 3, 2025. I was not informed of the recall, and the starter was not replaced. The vehicle caught fire on December 19, 2025, resulting in a total loss. While my insurance resolved the ACV, this incident was caused by BMW’s recall-related defect and procedural failure. I have escalated this matter to BMW North America and am requesting a resolution that restores me to a comparable position (replacement vehicle or financial support). Official confirmation: BMW North America confirmed in a confidential letter that the fire originated from the starter defect tied to the open recall. This letter is available for review upon request.

I am reporting a premature failure of two critical engine components: the Heat Management Module (Coolant Pump/Thermostat assembly) and the Oil Filter Housing. Despite the vehicle's low mileage (40,000 miles), the Heat Management Module began leaking coolant, posing a significant risk of engine overheating and sudden loss of power while driving. Simultaneously, the Oil Filter Housing has developed a leak, allowing oil to seep onto the engine block and potentially onto the serpentine belt. Both failures represent a safety hazard: Coolant Leak: Risk of thermal engine damage and being stranded in traffic due to overheating. Oil Leak: Risk of oil contacting hot exhaust components (fire hazard) or causing the serpentine belt to slip/fail, resulting in a sudden loss of power steering and charging systems. These components appear to have failed due to manufacturing or material defects rather than standard wear and tear for a vehicle of this age and mileage

My parked vehicle, with the ignition off, caught fire while I was inside the gym. Within10-15 mins of entering the gym, the gym intercom announced that a car matching the description of my vehicle was on fire on the parking lot. When I went outside, firefighters were actively extinguishing the flams and cutting in the hood of the car. The vehicle was ultimately destroyed and considered a total loss. The vehicle has an active recall warning of a potential fire risk, even when the car is parked and turned off. The fire occurred without any action on my part, and I could have been seriously injured or killed. Also, others as well.

The issue at hand is the oil filter housings on the B 58 and B 48 motors that BMW manufacturers. These oil filter housings are known to break after four years or 60,000 miles. can range from the engine overheating to oil leaks. The engine overheating can total the motor and the oil leaking can become a fire hazard. I was fortunate enough to be able to replace mine while BMW replaced another common failure point which is the heat management module. However, this is not as big as an issue as the oil filter, housing, because if the oil leaks, it can become again a fire hazard. There are several forum posts online about this issue I would like for NTHA please look at this thank you.

While traveling at approximately 20 mph, the vehicle experienced a sudden loud pop from the engine bay, immediately followed by multiple dashboard warning lights. The vehicle was safely brought to a stop, and AAA was contacted to arrange towing to the nearest available repair facility. A diagnostic inspection identified the failure of the crankshaft vibration damper. According to the repair facility, this component is essential to maintaining the structural integrity and operational balance of the engine. At the time of failure, the vehicle had approximately 37,000 miles on the odometer—well below the expected service life of such a critical part. Had this failure occurred at highway speeds, the resulting mechanical disruption could have led to a loss of engine function and increased the risk of a serious accident or death. The nature and mileage of this failure raise concerns about a potential defect or design flaw. I am requesting that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration review this incident and consider whether similar cases have been reported. Failures of this type should be reviewed for broader safety implications.

I had a coolant leak so I took car in for repair. Mechanic says I have a crack in the oil filter housing. Mechanic told me to check with BMW to see if there was a recall because the oil filter housing was made of plastic and he claimed he heard of recalls for this particular problem. I called BMW and they stated there were no recalls currently on my vehicle, but the plastic housing in BMW's are known to be prone to failure and there were recalls, but not for my vehicle. The warning message initially stated low coolant. Now it states low oil level.

BMW updates the car software by sending Remote Software Updates (RSU) using the the Over The Air (OTA) method. The updates include Driver Assistance updates and fixes. My car amongst many other BMW owners worldwide are reporting on the internet that the RSU process is not working and that the updates download OTA to the car but they do not do the final installation step. FYI OTA is currently the only method BMW uses to send updates to the vehicles . BMW replies to queries about the failure by directing owners to their dealers. The dealers than update the latest RSU at their facility . Cars in warranty are not charged by the dealers , but cars out of warranty are quoted in excess of $400 to install the updates. FYI updates are sent several times per years so those which require dealer service to install are faced with excessive cost for the updates. LANE DEPARTURE: WARNING Jan 6, 2025
During my ownership of this vehicle, it started developing a terrible vinegar/mildew smell when turning on A/C a while ago, which is really unpleasant. This is concerning to me because I am afraid of potential health risks, and as a premium vehicle, this type of problem is not acceptable in my opinion. I am also an owner of a 1998 BMW that exhibits zero AC issues, so it is quite frustrating that a ~20 year newer vehicle has this issue and this feels like a design flaw of my newer vehicle. I have spoken to my dealer couple times and they claimed changing my air filter cabin would help, but it hasn’t. The dealer has explained to me that they would need to perform a deep clean in the AC vents to completely remove the smell and I would need to pay out of pocket, which I don’t believe is fair. As a result, I have contacted BMW HQ, but they have told me that this is not something they can assist with. Therefore, I am reaching out to NHTSA to request further assistance.

My 2019 BMW 330i experienced a serious malfunction. The car intermittently blacked out upon pressing the start engine button, and then it began accelerating on its own without pressing the accelerator pedal. This occurred multiple times, and the issue has not been resolved or explained by the service center, which has resulted in a significant safety concern. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? It appears that the issue might be related to the car's ignition and acceleration system. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The car began accelerating on its own without pressing the accelerator pedal. This could be extremely dangerous if it happened while driving, as it could lead to loss of control and a potential accident. Fortunately, I was parked when this occurred. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? BMW Mountain View, CA service center were not able to reproduce it. They just changed the 12V battery but were not able to provide concrete reason or reproduce the issue. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others? The vehicle has been inspected by the service center but not by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others. Despite multiple requests from both myself and the dealership for further examination, BMW North America is not willing to involve their engineering team. Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? There were no warning lamps or messages prior to the issue. This situation could have been very serious if the unintended acceleration happened while driving. I was fortunately parked at the time and did not try to put the car in gear to avoid any potential accidents.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING Oct 6, 2023
Vehicle stopped abruptly for no reason. No obstacles ahead. Surface street. Light traffic. Fortunate there was no vehicle behind me or they could not have avoided a collision. Vehicle is still under warranty. Dealer states that they cannot find any problem.

I have heavy condensation in my BMW 330i xDrive driver side headlights. Comes during rainy and moist weather and takes couple of days to go away. upon dealer inspection its underlying issue with BMW's and sadly my warranty just expired 5 months ago and BMWusa is not helping in this regard.
AIR BAGS Aug 23, 2023
Had a passenger restraint system malfunction error warning light. Took the car to the dealer for service and they replaced the air bag repair wiring harness from the ACSM (air bag control unit) control module to both knee air bags. This did not fix the error, so they then replaced the air bag control unit. Error message is now not present. Dealer stated air bags would not deploy unless I had the repairs done, yet they stated that this safety issue was not covered by my warranty. Car is 2019 model with less than 20,000 miles.

I was driving on the 5 North Freeway near downtown Stockton at around 9:30 AM when, the sunroof on my car exploded. There was no visible objects or debris that had gone airborne that hit the car. The sunroof was closed and the sun shade was opened. The loud explosion sent glass throughout the interior of the car, left my ears ringing for ten minutes, and nearly cased me to get in a car accident. I inspected the interior of the car and could not find any debris associated with the incident. This incident posses a big danger and could even lead to serious injuries.

Excessive moisture or condensation in the headlights after heavy rain. First one failed which is on driver side but replaced but second one which is the passenger side failed too within months. Replace for headlights would cost 4.5K

SAME THING HAPPENED ON MY DRIVE HOME ON A CONCRETE ROADWAY. DAYTIME, CLEAR WEATHER BOTH EVENTS. DROVE RIGHT BACK TO THE SERVICE CENTER, LEFT THE CAR THERE AND TOLD THE DEALER TO PICK IT UP.

NO NOTIFICATION OF FAILURE ON THE MONITORING SYSTEM. NO DAMAGE TO THE TIRE RIM. UNLESS IT STRUCK A POTHOLE NOT FELT WELL DRIVING. THE IS THE SECOND TIRE TO DO THIS ON THE VEHICLE IN THE FIRST YEAR OF OWNERSHIP. SEEMS LIKE THE TIRES FAIL ON THEIR OWN.

I NOTICED THERE IS A RECALL ON THE PIRELLI 19" TIRES. I BELIEVE THIS HAS TO BE A MANUFACTURER DEFECT. THERE WAS NO TRAUMA THAT CAUSED THE BLOWOUTS AND THEY ALL OCCURRED SPONTANEOUSLY.

BMW ADVERTISES AS A SAFETY FEATURE AN EMERGENCY BRAKE ASSIST SYSTEM THAT "WARNS ABOUT THE RISK OF COLLISION AND, WHERE APPROPRIATE, BRINGS THE VEHICLE TO A COMPLETE STOP BEFORE IT RESULTS IN A CRASH WITH AN OBSTRUCTION, A PERSON OR ANOTHER VEHICLE" (HTTPS://WWW.BMW.COM/EN/INNOVATION/THE-MAIN-DRIVER-ASSISTANCE-SYSTEMS.HTML#PWJT-EMERGENCY-BRAKE-ASSIST) MY WIFE WAS DRIVING AT ABOUT 10-15 MPH AND THERE WAS ANOTHER CAR IN FRONT. SHE WAS DISTRACTED BY A CRYING BABY AND TOOK HER EYES OFF THE ROAD AND COLLIDED WITH THE FRONT CAR. THE BMW SYSTEM FAILED TO TAKE ACTION TO BRAKE TO MINIMIZE OR AVOID THE COLLISION. THIS WAS CONFIRMED WHEN BMW QUERIED THE SYSTEM, THAT NO BRAKING ASSIST WAS APPLIED IN THE INCIDENT. THIS "SAFETY" FEATURE WAS ADVERTISED BY BMW AND WE PAID A PREMIUM FOR THIS FEATURE AND IN FACT DECIDED TO LEASE THIS CAR BASED ON THIS FALSE PREMISE/ ADVERTISEMENT. IN THIS INSTANCE, THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED DURING DAYLIGHT ON A CITY STREET, WITH SUNNY WEATHER, WITH AN OBJECT AT A STANDSTILL IN FRONT OF MY CAR. *TR

TURNING OFF THE ENGINE. DANGEROUS ISSUE WHEN ONE STOPS AT THE END OF A TRIP, ONE IS ALMOST ALWAYS IN FORWARD OR REVERSE GEAR. IN THIS SITUATION, WHEN ONE PUSHES THE STOP/START BUTTON AT THE END OF A TRIP, THE ENGINE TURNS OFF AND THE CAR GOES ELECTRONICALLY INTO PARK. NO NEED TO TOUCH THE GEAR LEVER AT ALL. HOWEVER, IF THE ENGINE IS TURNED OFF AND ONE IS IN NEUTRAL THE CAR DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY SHIFT INTO PARK. THIS ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. I WAS IN NEUTRAL, PUSHED THE ENGINE OFF BUTTON AND STARTED TO LEAVE THE CAR, WHICH BEGAN TO ROLL DOWN A SMALL HILL, AS IT WAS NOT IN PARK. THIS HAPPENED TO ME TWICE BEFORE I REALIZED THE REASON ' FOR SOME REASON I WAS IN NEUTRAL WHEN I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF I HAVE SINCE LEARNED THAT THE SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED THIS WAY. IF ONE IS IN FORWARD OR REVERSE GEAR AND TURNS THE ENGINE OFF, THE PARK IS AUTOMATICALLY ENGAGED. IF ON IS IN NEUTRAL AND TURNS THE ENGINE OFF, THE CAR STAYS IN NEUTRAL ' HORRIBLE DESIGN. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS DONE FOR TOWING THE CAR. THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN CONSISTENCY ACROSS ALL THREE GEAR POSITIONS!

REVERSE WARNING 'CROSS TRAFFIC ALERT' DANGEROUS ISSUE THIS NEVER WORKED ON MY BMW 3 FOR OVER A WEEK I WAS GIVEN A LOANER CAR - NEW 2019 BMW 5. I WILL DESCRIBE HOW THE SYSTEM WORKED ON THIS LOANER. I HAVE VIDEOS I TOOK OF THE CAMERA IMAGE IN THE CAR. I WAS TOLD BY BMW THAT WHAT I HAD IN THE LOANER WAS EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE SYSTEM WOULD BE IN MY OWN BMW 3, WHEN IT WAS REPAIRED. THIS FUNCTION WORKED AS FOLLOWS ON MY LOANER BMW 5. THE DESIGN IS ALMOST DANGEROUS, UNLESS YOU FULLY UNDERSTAND WHAT IS GOING ON: A.IF ONE IS IN REVERSE THE SYSTEM ONLY PICKS UP CARS, IN THE CLOSEST LANE, COMING FROM ONES RIGHT. CARS COMING FROM THE LEFT, IN THE FAR AWAY LANE, ARE IGNORED THIS IS DANGEROUS. WHEN ONE REVERSES OUT OF A GARAGE OR PARKING SPACE, ONE USUALLY CROSSES BOTH LANES ON THE ROAD, EVEN IF TURNING IN THE LANE CLOSEST TO YOU. OFTEN ONE DESIRES TO SET OFF IN THE OTHER DIRECTION, IN THE LANE FURTHEST FROM YOU ' THE LANE IN WHICH CARS ARE NOT DETECTED B.THE WARNING , IF A CAR IS DETECTED, IS ALWAYS ONLY A RED AREA IN THE CAMERA VIEW. AN AUDIBLE WARNING IS ONLY GIVEN IF ONE IS SO CLOSE TO THE PASSING CAR THAT A CRASH IS POSSIBLE. IN OTHER WORDS IT NEVER PROVIDES AN AUDIBLE WARNING FROM THE CAR IN MOTION, BUT ONLY DETECTS AN IMPENDING COLLISION, SUCH AS ONE WOULD GET IF REVERSING INTO A WALL. THIS FIRST COUPLE OF TIMES THE SYSTEM NEARLY CAUSED ME AN ACCIDENT. I AM USED TO THE WARNING ON MY WIFE'S SUBARU ' AN AUDIBLE AND VISUAL WARNING FOR CARS, OR EVEN PEDESTRIANS, PASSING BEHIND, IN EITHER LANE. IN MY NEW BMW, I WAS REVERSING, SAW NOTHING, GOT NO WARNING AND BELIEVED IT SAFE TO PROCEED ' NOT TRUE - A CAR WAS CROSSING BEHIND ME IN THE FAR LANE. THE CHROME TRIM UNDER THE DISPLAY SCREEN REFLECTS THE SUN CAUSING A GLARE THAT REFLECTS BACK INTO THE DRIVER'S EYES AND ALSO MAKES THE SCREEN ABOVE IT VIRTUALLY UNREADABLE ON SUNNY DAYS WHEN DRIVING EAST, NE OR SE. OF COURSE, THE POSITION OF THE SUN DEPENDS ON LOCATION, TIME OF DAY AND SEASON. IN MY CASE THE GLARE REFLECTING OFF THE CHROME TRIM IS MOST PROMINENT WHEN DRIVING EAST ON A SUNNY DAY BETWEEN 10:00 AM AND 2:00 PM IN THE DETROIT AREA DURING SUMMER MONTHS.
