Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2005-2008 Audi A4 Sedan, A4 Avant, S4 Avant and S4 Sedan, 2007-2008 RS4 Sedan, 2004 RS4 Cabriolet, 2007-2009 A4 Cabriolet and S4 Cabriolet, 2005-2011 A6 Sedan, 2006-2011 A6 Avant, and 2007-2011 S6 Sedan vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
Remedy: Audi has notified owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag with an alternate remedy part, free of charge. The recall began June 29, 2018. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69R7. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 16V382, 17V032 and 18V004 and includes vehicles that may have had their air bag previously replaced under one of those campaigns.

ON CERTAIN PASSENGER AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE AUTOMATIC REAR LID INCLUDES AN ELECTRIC MOTOR AND CLUTCH THAT WORK IN CONJUNCTION WITH TWO GAS STRUTS TO OPEN AND CLOSE THE REAR LID, INCLUDING A MANUAL CLOSE FUNCTION. IF ONE OF THE STRUTS HAS A TOTAL LOSS OF PRESSURE, THE RESULTANT SLOW MOVEMENT OF THE REAR LID IS INTERPRETED BY THE SOFTWARE AS AN INTENDED MANUAL CLOSE AND THE MOTOR CLUTCH RELEASES TO CLOSE THE REAR LID IMMEDIATELY.

THE DEALER (AUDI BEDFORD IN BEDFORD, OHIO) HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THEIR FACILITY FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE WAS WORKING TO STANDARDS. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE ENTIRE ORIGINAL ENGINE WAS REPLACED IN SEPTEMBER OF 2010. AFTER THE REPAIR, THE VEHICLE STARTED HESITATING WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, AND WOULD EVEN STALL AT TIMES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES AND REFUSED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE AGAIN. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 57,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE LOCAL DEALER REPLACED THE ENGINE AGAIN. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, THE ENGINE SEIZED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE LOCAL DEALER CONFIRMED THAT THE CHAMBERS TO BOTH THE OIL AND ANTIFREEZE WHERE SHATTERED, WHICH CAUSED THEM TO MIX. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 300.

TAKATA RECALL WHEN WILL THE REPLACEMENT TAKE PLACE? IT'S BEEN 6 MONTHS SINCE THE ANNOUNCEMENT.
I INITIALLY CONTACTED THE LOCAL AUDI SERVICE DEPT (301-986-8800) ON 8-26-16. THEY TOOK MY INFORMATION AND SAID THAT THEY WOULD NOTIFY ME WHEN REPLACEMENT BAGS WERE AVAILABLE. I JUST RECEIVED MY THIRD NOTICE FROM CORPORATE AUDI RE THE URGENT NATURE OF ATTENDING TO THE REPLACEMENT. I AGAIN CALLED MY LOCAL AUDI, WAS TOLD TO SPEAK WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER. I LEFT HER A VOICEMAIL AND RECEIVED NO CALL BACK. THERE SHOULD BE A CONSEQUENCE TO SUCH BEHAVIOR AT THE LOCAL LEVEL WHEN THE CORPORATION PURPORTS TO BE INTERESTED IN MAKING THEIR VEHICLES SAFE FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS.
"TAKATA RECALL" JULY WILL MARK ONE YEAR AND AUDI STILL HASN'T REPLACED MY DEFECTIVE AIRBAG. I LIVE IN GEORGIA(ZONE A) AND WAITING A YEAR TO HAVE SOMETHING THIS DANGEROUS NOT ADDRESSED IS 100% UNACCEPTABLE! THESE AIRBAGS HAVE CAUSED MULTIPLE DEATHS AND WITH A FAMILY, NOT HAVING SOMEONE SIT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT IS NOT AN OPTION. I'M FORCED TO PUT MY CHILDREN IN DANGER EVERYDAY DRIVING THEM BACK AND FORTH TO SCHOOL AND AUDI'S RESPONSE TO THEIR LOYAL COSTUMERS IS DON'T DRIVE THE CAR OR YOU CAN SPEND MORE MONEY TO TRADE UP TO A NEW CAR. KEEP CALLING AUDI WHO TELLS ME THAT WE ARE LOW RISK AND HAVE BEEN DESIGNATED TO WAIT UNTIL "HIGH RISK" ARE TAKEN CARE OF. TAKATA RECALL: AFTER RECEIVING THE RECALL NOTICE IN MAY 2016, I CONTACTED AUDI IN SEPTEMBER 2016 TO FIND OUT THE PROGRESS ON RESOLVING THE AIRBAG ISSUE. THEY INDICATED THAT THEY HAD NO SOLUTION AND NO TIMEFRAME FOR A SOLUTION. AS OF DECEMBER 10, 2016, THAT STILL APPEARS TO BE THE CASE. I AM CONCERNED BECAUSE THE VEHICLE IS 8 YEARS OLD AND WE LIVE NEAR THE COAST IN FLORIDA.
