About This Data
All food recall data comes from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) through the openFDA enforcement database. Our database contains 28,679 recall enforcement actions spanning from 212 to 2026.
Class I is the most serious — reasonable probability of serious adverse health consequences or death. Class II means temporary or medically reversible adverse effects, remote probability of serious harm. Class III is least serious — exposure not likely to cause adverse health consequences. Our database contains 12,670 Class I recalls, 14,345 Class II, and 1,662 Class III.
Most food recalls (28,276) are voluntary — the manufacturer or distributor initiates the recall after discovering a safety problem. Only 396 recalls in our database were mandated by the FDA. Regardless of type, the safety implications for consumers are the same.
