Incident Narrative

Employees were filling 55-gallon drums of finished lubricant from a cook kettle. The injured employee was operating the kettle valve when the seal on the filter basket failed under pressure, spraying the employee with 300-400-degree F lubricant. The employee sustained second-and third-degree burns to 20% of the body, including his chest, arms, and legs and was hospitalized.
