Volvo Cars USA, LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2001-2007 V70 and XC70 vehicles. The driver's air bag inflator may explode during deployment, due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the driver's air bag, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 14, 2021. Owners may contact Volvo Car customer service at 1-888-458-1552. Volvo Car's number for this recall is R10136.

VOLVO IS RECALLING CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH GARMIN 760 PORTABLE GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS) UNITS BECAUSE THE BATTERIES ON THOSE UNITS MAY OVERHEAT.
Remedy: VOLVO ADVISES OWNERS TO PLEASE STOP USING THE GARMIN PORTABLE GPS DEVICE IMMEDIATELY, AND VISIT THE GARMIN WEBSITE TO DETERMINE IF THEIR UNIT IS AFFECTED. THE UNIT'S BATTERY WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW BATTERY AND A SPACER WILL BE INSERTED ON TOP OF THE BATTERY NEXT TO THE PCB. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. In April 2021 I drove my newly acquired Volvo V70 wagon from Mississippi to my home in RI. Once I reached in and around NYC, the car began to surge forward as I applied the brakes at stop lights/signs. This became most pronounced at the GW Bridge Toll area, in high slow-moving traffic. Several times the car almost got out of control as the brakes were barely enough to stop the car from ramming into other vehicles. Cars and huge trucks were honking their horns as I broke, swerved, smoke clouds from high idling in neutral, and peeling rubber as I moved forward from standing still. I was trapped as there is no place to pull over to the sides to a breakdown lane. It eventually stopped surging but has threatened to do it in RI. I asked the mechanic about it when I had to get the car inspected. He basically said he would have to see the vehicle when it was happening. I am just funding out about Recall information and filing a report. I really want to have any necessary repairs made because the car performs well otherwise...AND I am hoping to give the car for my daughter to use as she starts her new job, but want to make sure it is safe first. I feel I would know how to handle it if it surges again (throw it in neutral, brake and pull to safe place, etc), but can't trust that she would be able to handle this emergency situation.

I TOOK IT TO A VOLVO MECHANIC AND HE FOUND NO PROBLEM, BUT HE CLEANED SOME PARTS AND CHARGED ME. IT STILL HAPPENS AND IS DANGEROUS SINCE THE CAR COULD STALL IN TRAFFIC. IT HAS HAPPENED OVER 100 TIMES. I CALLED VOLVO "SUPPORT" AND THEY SAID THEY COULD DO NOTHING SINCE THERE IS NO RECALL ON THAT MODEL. THEY OFFERED NO TECHNICAL SUPPORT WHICH I THOUGHT WAS THE LEAST THEY SHOULD DO. I WOULD LIKE TO GET IT FIXED, BUT VOLVO IS OF NO HELP. AT LEAST THEY SHOULD OFFER TECHNICAL SUPPORT EVEN IF THERE IS NO RECALL.

I WAS DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 6:30AM, IT WAS STILL DARK, AND MY DASHBOARD WOULD NOT DISPLAY. I WAS GOING ABOUT 35 MILES PER HOUR. I PANICKED BECAUSE IT TELLS ME ALL THE CRITICAL THINGS ABOUT THE MOVING VEHICLE. THEN ABOUT 2 MINUTES LATER IT CAME ON. THIS NON-DISPLAY OF THE DASHBOARD WOULD INTERMITTENTLY HAPPEN WHEN I DROVE THE VEHICLE OVER THE NEXT MONTH. I COULD NOT DETECT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. SO I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY VOLVO MECHANIC. HE SAID IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM. THE DIM WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. I HAD THE MECHANIC REPLACE THE DIM BECAUSE I HAD NO CHOICE. I COULD NOT DRIVE WITHOUT A DASHBOARD. I CALLED VOLVO AND ASKED WHAT THEY WERE DOING ABOUT THE PROBLEM. THEY SAID NOTHING. BUT THEY WOULD REPORT IT TO NHTSA WITH THEIR NEXT REPORT. I PERSONALLY THINK THIS PART SHOULD BE RECALLED. I WAS SURPRISED TO HEAR IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM AND FOR SO MANY YEARS. OUR VEHICLE WAS REAR-ENDED BY A 2012 VW TIGUAN (WHICH WAS ITSELF REAR-ENDED BY A 1997 DODGE RAM). THE REAR OF OUR VEHICLE OFFERED NO PROTECTION TO OCCUPANTS IN THE THIRD-ROW SEAT THAT VOLVO CLAIMS IS DESIGNED TO ACCOMMODATE CHILDREN. THE VW MADE ALMOST NO CONTACT WITH THE FRAME OF OUR CAR, AND INSTEAD SLID RIGHT INTO THE REAR PASSENGER COMPARTMENT ALMOST 2 FEET, CRUMPLING THE HATCH THAT WAS THE ONLY BARRIER BETWEEN THE LEGS OF A PASSENGER (HAD THERE BEEN ONE) AND THE FRONT OF THE VW. THE DOOR CANNOT BE OPENED FROM THE INSIDE OF THE CAR. THE MECHANISM TO OPEN THE CAR DOOR FROM THE INSIDE COMPARTMENT IS DEFECTIVE. THE LATCH CABLE END IS CONTAINED BY A PLASTICS HOUSING. THE CABLE END HAS ANOTHER PLASTIC PART THAT SNAPS INTO THE HOUSING. THERE ARE CLIPS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE PLASTIC HOUSING WHICH HOLD DOWN THE CABLE END. WHEN THESE CLIPS BREAK THE CABLE END COMES OUT OF THE HOUSING. WHEN THE HOUSING CLIPS BREAK, THE INSIDE DOOR HANDLE WILL NOT OPEN THE DOOR. IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH AND LOSS OF POWER THE OCCUPANT WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO EXIT THE ADJACENT DOOR. *TR

THIS CAR HAS BEEN WELL CARED SINCE WE GOT IT AT THE DAY ONE. ALL SCHEDULE MAINTENANCE HAVE BEEN DONE AT A VOLVO DEALER. WE HAVE SPEND OVER $7000 ON REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE OVER THE YEARS. BUT ITS TRANSMISSION STARTED TO SLIP SINCE FEB 2011 WHEN THERE WAS ONLY 100,000 MILES ON IT. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER. THEY SUGGESTED A TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGE. WE FOLLOWED THEIR SUGGESTION AS WE ALWAYS DID. BUT THAT DID NOT RESOLVED THE PROBLEM. THE TRANSMISSION STILL DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AGAIN THIS OCT, AND THE DEALER SAID THE TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS ALL BLACK. ALONG WITH THE PROBLEM WE MEET, THEY CONCLUDE THE TRANSMISSION IS ABOUT TO DIE, AND THE ONE FIX IS TO REPLACE WITH A NEW ONE WHICH WILL COST $4500! WE WOULD EXPECT THE TRANSMISSION OF A WELL-CARE VOLVO WOULD LAST LONGER THAN 100,000 MILES. AS I DID SOME RESEARCH ON INTERNET, I FOUND MANY 99-02 VOLVO OWNERS HAVE THE SIMILAR UNFORTUNATE ISSUE. A MECHANIC TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE AFTERWARDS AND WE WERE TOLD THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. MILEAGE WAS 132,00. VISITED A LOCAL MECHANIC AND HE SAID HE HAD SERVICED SEVERAL VOLVO S60 AND V70 MODELS OF THE 2001~2002 MODEL YEAR AND HAD FOUND THAT SEVERAL HAD EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM WITH ONLY A TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE. TRANSMISSION BEGAN SLIPPING AROUND 90,000 MILES. CHANGING FROM 2ND TO 3RD WAS A PRESSURIZED BUILD UP RESULTING IN A LUNGE FORWARD OR BUCKING OF VEHICLE. VOLVO ADVISED A NEW TRANSMISSION BUT ADVISED US OF A COMPUTER DOWNLOAD THAT MIGHT FIX THE PROBLEM. AFTER THE DOWNLOAD THE CAR DROVE GREAT FOR ABOUT THREE WEEKS. THEN IT BEGAN AGAIN. WHEN ON A TRIP THE JERKING IN CHANGING WAS SO VIOLENT THE GAS LINE WAS FORCED LOOSE FROM THE FUEL FILTER CAUSING A STALL IN TRAFFIC. FORTUNATELY WE WERE ABLE TO PUSH THE CAR OUT OF TRAFFIC AND WAITED FOR A MECHANIC TO ARRIVE TO RE-INSTALL THE LINE TO THE FILTER. VOLVO DEALER WAS ABOUT THREE MILES DOWN THE ROAD BUT REFUSED TO COME OUT STATING TOO MUCH GOING ON AND THAT THEY COULD HELP BUT WOULD WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT DAY SINCE SO CLOSE TO 5 PM. INDEPENDENT MECHANIC CAME TO HELP. A NEW TRANS WAS INSTALLED BUT WITH LESS THAN 5000 MILES THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE COMING BACK. ALSO THE BRAKE BOOSTER WENT OUT. A FAILED RECALLED PART LEFT US STRANDED WHEN WE FIRST BOUGHT THE CAR AND WE PAID THE TOWING FEES TO VOLVO. *TR
