EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL:NAVIGATIONAL SYSTEM(GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM)
VOLVO IS RECALLING CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH GARMIN 760 PORTABLE GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS) UNITS BECAUSE THE BATTERIES ON THOSE UNITS MAY OVERHEAT.
Remedy: VOLVO ADVISES OWNERS TO PLEASE STOP USING THE GARMIN PORTABLE GPS DEVICE IMMEDIATELY, AND VISIT THE GARMIN WEBSITE TO DETERMINE IF THEIR UNIT IS AFFECTED. THE UNIT'S BATTERY WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW BATTERY AND A SPACER WILL BE INSERTED ON TOP OF THE BATTERY NEXT TO THE PCB. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. The contact owns a 2000 Volvo S80. The contact stated that while at a complete stop, the vehicle intermittently hesitated in responding while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated during the failure. The contact called the dealer and the manufacturer and was informed that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 06V441000 (Vehicle Speed Control) which he linked to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

I WANT TO MAKE YOU AWARE OF A VERY SERIOUS CAR ACCIDENT THAT MY MOTHER HAD ON 9-5-18. SHE WAS DRIVING HER 2000 VOLVO S80 WHEN HER CAR BEGAN TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. SHE WAS NOT ABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR. MY MOM HAD HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE BUT THAT DID NOT STOP THE VEHICLE. UNFORTUNATELY, AT THAT POINT THE CAR WAS OUT OF CONTROL HITTING AND BANGING UP ALL THE CARS AROUND IT. THEN THE CAR FINALLY SMASHED INTO ANOTHER CAR STOPPING THE OUT OF CONTROL CAR. MY MOM WAS SERIOUSLY HURT AND TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL. SHE HAD EMERGENCY SURGERY TO REPAIR HER AORTA THAT TORE FROM THE CRASH. SHE ALSO BROKE HER STERNUM. I AM DEVASTATED BY WHAT HAPPENED TO MY MOM. I FEEL THAT IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT YOU AND VOLVO ARE MADE AWARE OF THIS TRAGIC SITUATION THAT OCCURRED BY THIS VOLVO S80.

VEHICLE HAS THE SMELL OF FUEL. THE 2001-2005 MODELS HAVE A RECALL FOR THIS SAME ISSUE BECAUSE OF THE PLASTIC ON THE FUEL PUMP FLANGE CRACKING. MANY OWNERS OF THE 2000 MODELS ARE REPORTING THIS ISSUE. THE FUEL PUMP IS THE SAME USED ON THE 2000 YEAR MODEL AS THE 2001-2005 SO THE 2000 SHOULD BE PART OF THE RECALL ALSO. THE SMELL OF FUEL IS NOT JUST UNPLEASANT BUT DANGEROUS. SURE ENOUGH, I TAKE IT TO A MECHANIC AND THE FUEL PUMP IS VISIBLY MOIST ON THE EXTERIOR FROM AN OBVIOUS FUEL LEAKAGE. I RESEARCHED "VOLVO S80 FUEL PUMP" AND FOUND A RECALL IS IN PLACE. THE RECALL STARTS FROM 2001 MODELS AND RANGES UP TO 2005 MODELS AND IS DUE TO THE MATERIAL USED IN THE FUEL PUMP (RECALL CAMPAIGN 09V-483). SINCE MY VEHICLE IS A 2000 MODEL, MY LOCAL VOLVO DEALERSHIP SAID "I DO NOT MEET THE QUALIFICATIONS". MY CONCERN IS IF THE MATERIAL USED IN THE ASSEMBLY OF THE FUEL PUMP CHANGED FROM S80 2000 TO 2001 MODELS. THIS CAR BEEN PARKED SINCE MID MAY 2012 WITH 2 PROBLEMS, CVVT & INLET HOSES. I HAD THE BATTERY CHARGED & THE INLET HOSE FIX, SO IT COULD GO INTO THE SHOP FOR INSPECTION. AUG.13 I PUT THE PLATES ON IT & DROVE IT FOR THE 1ST TIME AT NIGHT TO DROP IT OFF AT THE SHOP FOR INSPECTION. WHICH I HAD SPOKEN WITH 2 DAYS EARLIER.. THE MORNING OF AUG 14, I CALL THE SHOP AND WAS INFORMED MY CAR HAD A FUEL PUMP LEAK. I THAN CALL THE VOLVO CORP. CAUSE IT HAD ISSUE A RECALL FOR THE FUEL PUMP. I WAS DRIVING ALONG A BUSY STREET, WHEN I CAME TO A STOP SIGN THE BRAKES WHERE HARD TO PUSH, WHEN I FINALLY STOPPED THE CAR, YOU COULD STILL FILL THE CAR TRYING TO MOVE FORWARD I TOOK MY FOOT OF THE BRAKES AND THE CAR SPED UP ON IT'S ON REACHING CLOSE TO 40 MPH AGAIN I WAS BARELY ABLE TO STOP THE CAR DO TO A STIFF BRAKE PEDAL. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND SHUT IT OFF, ONCE I RESTARTED THE CAR IT WAS SPUTTERING AND WOULDN'T IDLE CORRECTLY EVERY TIME I PUT THE CAR IN GEAR IT WOULD SHUT OFF NOW I'M GETTING AN ERROR MESSAGE THAT SAYS SERVICE ENGINE SYSTEM URGENT. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 VOLVO S80. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, SHE BEGAN TO SMELL AN ODOR OF FUEL INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED AND THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT FUEL WAS LEAKING THROUGH CRACKS IN THE FUEL PUMP, TRAVELING UP TO THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FUEL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V483000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP) THAT MAY BE RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000.

2000 S80 VOLVO ON HIGHWAY GOING STRAIGHT. 60 MILES AN HR. STEERING WHEEL TURNS RADICALLY TO LEFT. LOOSE CONTROL OF CAR. STEERING WHEEL IS LOCKED. MAC TRUCK DRIVER SAID THAT HE HEARD A LOUD SOUND OUT OF CAR. HE HEARD IT BEFORE HE SAW IT. AFTER BOUNCING OFF TRUCK AND HITTING RAILING. CAR FINALLY STOPS. CAR IS TOTALED. VOLVO BODY OF CAR WAS NOT VERY CRUSHED. I FEARED THAT IF THE MAC TRUCK DID NOT HIT ME. THE VOLVO WOULD HAVE TAKEN MANY LIVES WITH IT. IT WENT THROUGH 4 LANES OF HONKING TRAFFIC. SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL AS NOW PERMITS SAFETY ISSUE TO CONTINUE INDEFINITELY IN AUTOMOBILE TYPE/MODEL TYPICALLY DRIVEN DECADES.
