I am reporting a recurring safety-related malfunction involving the backup camera, proximity sensors, and infotainment system on my 2024 Volkswagen GTI. These components are still installed on the vehicle and available for inspection upon request. I purchased the vehicle on August 5, 2024, from Kin
... g Volkswagen in Gaithersburg, MD. The following day, the system began failing repeatedly. When the issue occurs, there is a loud popping sound from the speakers, the infotainment screen shuts off and reboots, and a warning light appears on the dashboard indicating a system fault. This has happened more than 80 times so far, sometimes multiple times per day. This malfunction creates a safety risk because the backup camera and pedestrian/vehicle detection alerts become unreliable or unavailable at critical moments. The sudden audio pop and system reset are also distracting while driving. I have taken the vehicle to the dealership several times and provided video recordings showing the failure. I have even spoken with the sales manager in person and never got back to me like promised. The dealer has stated they cannot replicate the issue and has only attempted software resets or updates. The problem has not been confirmed or repaired by the dealer, and the vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. The warning light and system resets first appeared the day after purchase and have continued without any prior message or indication before each failure. This ongoing malfunction affects essential safety systems, and I am requesting a formal investigation and resolution.Read more

However, one time I took my vehicle in, the issue that would occur became slightly different. To me, this demonstrates something was changed, but as a temporary fix. Additionally, a quick Google search indicates this is a common issue. Prior to this issue appearing, there were no other symptoms. The first recorded instance I have of this is on 04/08/2024, only 7 days after purchasing the vehicle.Read more

Travel Assist is disabled which includes Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist. The warning lights flash on and off, sometimes multiple times a second, sounding a loud beeping each time. It is triggered at engine start and persists through all speeds. I have experienced it 0-70 mph. The flash

Warning lights and warning sounds are designed to alert the driver to a potential safety issue so ignoring the lights and sounds is dangerous in the event it is a different caution/warning. However, also not ignoring it is dangerous because of the frequency of the warnings which causes the driver to look away from the road. After speaking with the maintenance department at my VW dealership, they indicated that this is a widely known problem that is remedied only with the replacement of the steering wheel. There are several other sensors that are triggered by the same issue I was told by the maintenance department. They are uncertain at this time if it impacts the airbag system which is another potential safety concern. The steering wheel can only be ordered after inspection by the maintenance department and there is shortage and/or back order of the part to fix the problem.Read more

It hold for 2-3 additional seconds before it will allow the car to move, causing car to stall when engaging the clutch into gear. 50 years experience driving manual transmission cars - this defect is diabolical and patently unsafe. The 8th generation of the VW Golf (and 7th generation Jetta) has a dangerous Hill Start Assist for manual transmission cars that cannot be disabled. When stopped on an incline, the car holds the brakes after the driver removes their foot from the pedal for a variable amount of time (upwards of 2 s
... econds), which was originally designed to help start on steep inclines. This is dangerous for a number of reasons. The first is that it's impossible to gauge when the car will release the brakes, so it will always roll backwards. The reaction of the driver to rolling backwards, instead of timing the movement from brakes to accelerator is much more difficult and often causes more delays due to stalling. The second is that the driver has no visibility to a sensor or light for this mechanism, making it very unpredictable. Lastly, drivers behind the vehicle see the brake lights go off when the driver lifts their foot, but the car is unable to move for multiple seconds, which causes more risk of injury, accident, and overall traffic.Read more

There wasn't a proper "Problem Parts" option for my issue. My car has a manual transmission and VW has decided that adding a brake hold feature whenever the car is stopped at an intersection or in traffic etc. would be a good idea. I'm hear to tell you I have almost become part several accidents w
... ith this car even though it only has 40 miles on it. This is a well know issue with these cars that has been designed into them. I have been driving manual transmission cars for over 20 years without this issue. The problem is when I come to a stop the car holds the brake for an additional three Mississippi seconds. This screws up timing when pulling out into traffic which will likely cause an accident at some point. I have stalled the car trying to pull out into traffic and while in stop and go traffic. Luckily the person behind me was able to slam on their brakes before ramming me. I have considered rolling though stop signs to avoid stopping and possibly stalling the car. There have been many complaints about this online. The problem could easily be fixed with a software update from VW. Realistically if there was a brake hold with only 1 Mississippi hold time it would be great or none at all.Read more

I am [XXX] and have only ever owned manual transmission cars. I bought a 2024 GTI/Manual Transmission a few months ago. I also have a 2017 GTI Sport, 6MT. All purchased new. I was so used to the way the 2017 utilized hill hold and had not experienced a hill in my test drive before buying the car.
... I also drove other brands manual transmission and they all worked in a similar manner. The "Hill Hold" feature on this 2024 GTI/Manual Transmission vehicle is dangerous and does not release when it is supposed to. It is extremely aggressive in the amount that it is holding. In fact, I was rear ended 1 mile from the dealership after picking up the car because of this issue...no kidding. My current workaround is to release the brake, wait a couple of seconds until the car releases its "Hill Hold", rolls backward, and then give throttle/release the clutch. This is a safety concern in many ways. I could get rear ended again because the rear brake light goes out when I release the foot brake, even though I have to wait a few seconds to move forward. Also, in an emergency, if I had to move quickly, the car would likely stall if I tried to overcome the "Hill Hold" brake before it releases itself. VW Front Assist is the safety feature that is supposed to warn the driver of the danger of an imminent front collision. Initial aural and visual warnings are followed by autonomous braking if the driver does not respond. I have had my new car for 14 days, and have received the warning "Front Assist
... not available; impaired sensor" 5 times during these 14 days. I have taken the car to the dealer three times. Their current verdict is the the system is not malfunctioning but rather the sensor is sensitive to weather. Two times the system became unavailable during misty weather; twice the system became unavailable during sleeting weather; once the system became unavailable during humid weather after a rainstorm. In one instance, the system did not reboot for 3 days despite cleared weather. The outages did not occur during what I would call severe weather, just somewhat inclement conditions. Essentially Front Assist has not worked for approximately 30% of my first two weeks of ownership. I believe a safety feature that does not work during rain, mist, and sleet is dangerous.Read more

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has completed its review of a defect petition received on 14 August 2019 requesting an investigation of an alleged defect of the manual transmissions in Model Year (MY) 2019 Volkswagen (VW) GTI, Golf GTI and Jetta GLI vehicles. The stalling incidents cited o
... ccurred without warning as the vehicle slows to a stop or prepares to make a turn across traffic with the clutch pressed in and the vehicle in neutral. The hazard posed by a vehicle stalling event is manifested in the inability of the vehicle to move with the flow of surrounding traffic. Two factors have a major impact on the potential hazard to the vehicle, its occupants and surrounding vehicles: the surrounding traffic speed and the subject vehicle's restart ability. In the case of the vehicles that are the subject of this petition, restart is immediate and the stalls occur when the vehicle is slowing to stop for a traffic signal, making a turn, or is completely stopped. These circumstances substantially reduce the risk of harm to the vehicle, its occupants and surrounding vehicles. As of March 2, 2020, out of the population of 11,333 subject vehicles, NHTSA has identified 214 consumer complaints in its database, with unique Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN), citing engine stalling as vehicles are being brought to a stop and/or preparing to make a cross traffic turn. When combined with the warranty, field report and customer complaint data received from VW in response to the Information Request letter sent, NHTSA identified 413 unique VINs alleging low speed engine stalling.Volkswagen determined that the low speed / idle engine stall was the result of unwanted gases remaining in the cylinder caused by the intake valve camshaft not being in the correct position at idle. The intake camshaft is in an advanced position. This advanced position results in too much overlap with the position of the exhaust valve camshaft, allowing both the intake and exhaust valves to be open at the same time. The erroneous advanced position of the intake camshaft is a result of low oil pressure at idle and high oil temperatures, greater than or equal to 110?C/230?F combined with engine control algorithms in the Engine Control Module (ECM) that position the intake camshaft. Based on examination of returned engines, only engines manufactured at the Silao Mexico plant were affected due to a tolerance stack-up issue with the oil system of the engines. In December of 2019, VW initiated a Service Action (24FD) to remedy the stalling issue in the affected vehicles. The warranty for the affected vehicles was extended to December 31, 2025. The software in the Engine Control Module (ECM) will be updated with a new calibration value for the adaptation nodes of the regulation valve. This is a directed action with letters being sent to vehicle owners asking them to bring their vehicles to their dealership to have the software update installed in their vehicle. The letters were sent in December 2019.After thoroughly assessing the material submitted by the petitioner, information already in NHTSA's possession, information submitted by Volkswagen in response to an information request and the potential risks to safety implicated by the petitioner's allegation, NHTSA does not believe that the stalling condition as alleged by the petitioner indicates the likelihood of a safety related defect that would warrant a formal investigation, therefore the petition is denied. Further specifics can be found in the Federal Register Notice.ODI complaint ID Numbers are listed on the attached sheet.Read more

Air Bag Clockspring Failure
In August 2015, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) launched Safety Recall 15V-483 to address the loss of the protection provided by the front driver air bag in several models due to the failure of the clockspring.Debris entry into the steering wheel hub can result in contamination and ul
... timately failure of the clockspring in 2010-2014 Model Year (MY) CC, Passat, Eos, Golf, GTI, Tiguan, Jetta and Jetta Sportwagen models.Contamination of the clockspring can cause the ribbon cable to tear resulting in loss of the electrical connection to the front driver air bag and any steering wheel mounted controls.The loss of the electrical connection to the front driver air bag will result in illumination of the air bag warning light and will prevent operation of the front driver air bag in a crash of sufficient severity requiring a commanded deployment.In November 2017, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a Recall Query (RQ17-009) after the agency received 90 complaints alleging failure of the clockspring in the subject models.Several of the complaints allege failure of the clockspring after receiving the recall remedy.The majority of the complaints allege the same failure mode without being included in the original recall, 15V-483.In its March 2018 response to ODI's Information Request under the Recall Query, Volkswagen provided approximately 700 consumer complaints and field reports on the recalled vehicles.These reports allege clockspring failure similar to the NHTSA reports described above.To date, NHTSA has received approximately 154 allegations of clockspring failure since the recall has launched.The total of 852 reports shown in the table above eliminates 6 duplicative reports received by ODI and the manufacturer.This Recall Query has been upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (EA18-003) to further evaluate the scope and effectiveness of the remedy associated with 15V-483 and perform a review of the design changes implemented by Volkswagen and its suppliers to address this issue.The ODI complaints cited above can be viewed at www.NHTSA.gov under the following ODI identification numbers: 11080741, 11079877, 11079805, 11079124, 11076709, 11076645, 11076297, 11076249, 11076133, 11075756, 11075726, 11075358, 11075259, 11075055, 11074920, 11074565, 11073090, 11072745, 11072457, 11072089, 11071933, 11071880, 11071630, 11071592, 11067396, 11067061, 11066738, 11066601, 11066511, 11065909, 11065871, 11065262, 11064701, 11064564, 11064544, 11064531, 11063961, 11063501, 11063095, 11062772, 11062464, 11062353, 11062344, 11061463, 11061310, 11061311, 11060735, 11058154, 11057519, 11057477, 11057341, 11056793, 11056243, 11056063, 11055639, 11054279, 11052812, 11052678, 11052384, 11052228, 11051336, 11051155, 11051074, 11048803, 11047037, 11044226, 11043653, 11039142, 11033893, 11033330, 11032548, 11025475, 11025356, 11024647, 11023423, 11020570, 11020312, 11019415, 11019067, 11015441, 11015431, 11014595, 11014016, 11013709, 11013415, 11012596, 11011753, 11006668, 11006521, 11006307, 11006181, 11005301, 11003865, 11001780, 11001783, 11001334, 10994184, 10993360, 10993524, 10992490, 10985926, 10983678, 10981220, 10980831, 10980941, 10980549, 10979418, 10971152, 10967344, 10967155, 10959968, 10958624, 10957279, 10956488, 10949129, 10947562, 10945122, 10936498, 10936543, 10933950, 10927311, 10925421, 10924034, 10915612, 10915569, 10911171, 10902066, 10898733, 10896537, 10896510, 10895526, 10893938, 10891686, 10864967, 10863742, 10861984, 10851242, 10822505, 10821562, 10818403, 10795068, 10794402, 10788738, 10787804, 10782544, 10780725, 10780145, 10779145, 10776477, 10775448, 10763492, 10763423, 10763289, 107626Read more

Air Bag Clockspring Failure
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened an investigation based on consumer allegations of steering wheel clock spring/steering column control module (SCCM) failures in model year (MY) 2012 Volkswagen Passat and CC models. The SCCM is a module within the steering column that incorporates a sp
... iral conductor (a ribbon cable) to electrically connect the steering wheel to the vehicle's electrical system while allowing for the turning of the steering wheel.Complainants alleged that that the clock spring failed while driving and without warning. When the SCCM fails electrically, an air bag warning light is illuminated on the dash of the vehicle. If a vehicle with a failed SCCM were to be involved in a crash of sufficient severity to require deployment, the driver air bag may not deploy properly, or deploy at all.As the result of an Information Request response from Volkswagen, ODI determined that the same SCCM was used in several vehicle models and MYs including: 2010-2013 CC, 2010-2013 Eos, 2011-2013 Golf, 2012-2013 Jetta and Jetta SportWagen, 2010 and 2012-2014 Passat and 2011-2014 Tiguan.ODI identified a total of 29 NHTSA complaints across all affected vehicles potentially indicating a failed SCCM.Drivers often indicated that an audible noise was heard from the steering column when the unit failed. Some drivers also mentioned that there was a noticeable but minor resistance to turning of the steering wheel after the failure with noises coming from the steering column. The average failure mileage is approximately 30,500 miles and failures often occur outside of the factory warranty. There were no reported crashes or injuries identified in either the NHTSA or Volkswagen data as a result of SCCM failures. On July 30th, 2015 Volkswagen notified ODI that it would conduct a safety recall (15V-483) to remedy the SCCMs in 415,825 MY2010-2014 vehicles.According to Volkswagen, the SCCM can become contaminated with human hair or similar fibers entering the unit between the steering wheel and steering column.Over time this can cause the electrical cable to tear and lose connection between the steering wheel and vehicle.Volkswagen will install a cover that attaches over the SCCM to help prevent contaminants from entering the unit.A new SCCM designed to reduce outside contamination intrusion was previously introduced into new vehicle production during the 2014 model year; accordingly vehicles equipped with the new design SCCM are not included in the recall. The recall action initiated by the manufacturer addresses the safety risks identified by the investigation.Accordingly, the investigation is closed. The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchSafetyIssues under the following identification (ODI) numbers: 10760644, 10758777, 10748922, 110734168, 10731545, 10721424, 10717651, 10715305, 10713742, 10713139, 10712295, 10711945, 10704830, 10704221, 10702926, 10702212, 10701406, 10691906, 10683944, 10682136, 10672715, 10670517, 10669312, 10628549, 10607240, 10575783, 10561143, 10552113, 10397670.Read more
