ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
The Gates Corporation (Gates) is recalling certain aftermarket Tru-Flow Water Pumps, part number TFW 41127, sold at certain NAPA Auto Parts and/or installed by automotive service technicians after November 1, 2013 (and manufactured August 2013 through October 2013) that have a black-colored pulley/sprocket or do not have 'US9377' stamped on the water pump housing. These service replacement parts were sold for use in model year 1999-2005 Audi A4, 2000-2006 Audi TT, 1998-2005 Volkswagen Beetle, 1999-2006 Golf, 1999-2008 and 2011-2013 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2000-2005 Volkswagen Passat. In the affected water pumps, the pulley or sprocket that turns the timing belt may develop microfractures causing the timing belt to fail.
Remedy: Gates will notify owners, and dealers will replace the water pump, free of charge. The recall began during May 2014. Owners may contact The Gates Corporation at 1-303-744-1911.

THESE HEADLAMPS FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, "LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT." THESE LAMPS DO NOT CONTAIN THE REQUIRED AMBER SIDE REFLECTORS.

VOLKSWAGEN IS RECALLING 76,900 MY 2004-2005 NEW BEETLE AND MY 2003-2005 NEW BEETLE CONVERTIBLES EQUIPPED WITH AN ADVANCED (DUAL-STAGE) AIR BAG SYSTEM. THIS SYSTEM MAY HAVE AIR BAG FRONTAL CRASH SENSORS THAT CONTAIN A SOLDER JOINT ON THE CIRCUIT BOARD THAT MAY CRACK UNDER CERTAIN HIGH TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS. IF THIS OCCURS, THE AIR BAG INDICATOR LIGHT WILL ILLUMINATE AND THE FALLBACK ALGORITHM WILL ENSURE THAT THE FRONT AIR BAGS ALWAYS DEPLOY IN A FRONTAL CRASH IN WHICH THE VEHICLE'S DECELERATION IS HIGH ENOUGH TO ACTIVATE THE FRONTAL AIR BAGS.

The contact's son owned a 2005 Volkswagen Beetle Turbocharged. The contact stated that while her son was driving at 60 MPH during early evening hours, he traveled over black ice in the road, which caused the vehicle to spin around several times before crashing into the guardrail and concrete wall several times, striking the front and rear of the vehicle, where it eventually came to a stop. The air bags did not deploy. There was no reported fire. The front passenger side occupant sustained a severe concussion. The driver sustained a spinal curvature injury and a severe concussion. Medical attention was received, and both occupants were seen at a hospital. There were no warning lights illuminated before or after the failure. The police were on the scene, but it was unknown if a police report was filed. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 08V178000 (Air Bags). The contact spoke with the sheriff, who referred to a lawyer. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot. The contact was notified of the crash through the 360 app. A local dealer was able to be located. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was deemed a total loss by the insurance company. The failure mileage was approximately 220,000. The VIN was not available.

my 2005 VW Beetle auotmatic has 96k miles. When taking off the car shudders hard on 1st and 2nd gear. It feels like the transmission is out to fall out of the car. It also stops moving forward at times. I have quit driving it due to fear of getting hit. I feel this is a very dangerous and could cause serious injuries to me and other drivers. Please help

THEN I WAS DRIVING TO TOWN LATE ONE NIGHT AND MY HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT. THE LOW BEAMS, I STILL HAD THE HIGH BEAMS. THEN I GOT PULLED OVER CAUSE MY TAIL LIGHTS WERE NOT WORKING. THEY DETERMINED THAT THE FUSE BOX/ALTERNATOR CABLE MELTED. THEY SAID THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH THE BEETLE. WE CHECKED TO SEE IF WE MISSED ANY RECALLS AND WERE SURPRISED TO LEARN THAT THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANY ON SUCH A DANGEROUS ISSUE! I AM INCLUDING SCREEN CAPTURED IMAGES FROM VIDEO WE HAVE OF THE PROBLEM BEING INSPECTED. WE ALSO HAVE DOCUMENTATION FROM THE MECHANIC.

BATTERY DRAINS OUT CONTINUOUSLY EVEN WITH NO KEY IN THE IGNITION. DEALERSHIP HAS GIVEN UP OF REPAIRING THE CAR EVEN AFTER SPENDING 500$ IN DIAGNOSTICS, THEY COULD NOT IDENTIFY A CORRECTIVE COURSE OF ACTION. I HAVE ALL BILLS AND REPAIR LISTS ON FILE IF NEEDED. THE CAR HAS ONLY 44,000 MILES AND WAS IN MINT CONDITION. I HAVE ALSO HAD TO REPLACE 3 OF THE 4 WINDOW COMPONENTS ON THE ELECTRIC WINDOWS.

THE REPAIRMAN DIAGNOSED IT AS CODES P1738 AND P1739 WHICH INDICATE THE FRONTAL CRASH SENSORS FOR THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDES. 76,900 CARS UNDER RECALL 08V178000 HAVE THE SAME ISSUES FOR THIS. MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE VW DEALER IS NOT WILLING TO FIX, I FEEL I AM BEING PENALIZED BY HAVING TO PAY 500.00 TO REPAIR A KNOWN PROBLEM. I BOUGHT A USED 2005 VW NEW BEETLE WITH TRIPTONIC TRANSMISSION WITH 82,000 MILES A FEW WEEKS AGO. VERY QUICKLY THE CAR STARTED HAVING TRANSMISSION ISSUES WHICH APPEAR WHEN THE CAR HAS WARMED UP AFTER ~10/15 MINS. THE PROBLEM I'M EXPERIENCING IS THAT THE CAR WILL NOT SHIFT SMOOTHLY WHEN RUNNING BETWEEN THE 3 AND 4TH GEAR AND OFTEN REVS UP TO 5000 RPM BEFORE IT "CLUNKS" INTO HIGHER GEAR. IT'S ALSO HARD SHIFTING VERY ABRUPTLY SOMETIMES WHICH GIVES ME VERY LITTLE CONFIDENCE IN DRIVING THE CAR. IT SEEMS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AS IT SUDDENLY LUNGES FORWARD OR GETS STUCK IN GEAR AND DOESN'T ACCELERATE. ONE OF THE WORST INCIDENT FOR ME WAS WHILE IN TRAFFIC GOING SLIGHTLY UPHILL THE CAR GOT STUCK IN THIRD AND STARTED REVVING UP WITHOUT ACCELERATING AND I ALMOST GOT HIT BY A CAR BEHIND WHO DIDN'T EXPECT MY CAR TO MOVE SO SLOWLY. I TOOK THE CAR TO A VOLKSWAGEN DEALERSHIP AND THEY DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING WEIRD THE FIRST TIME WHEN I TOOK IT FOR THE 80.000 MILES REVISION. AFTER REPEATEDLY EXPERIENCING THE ISSUE I TOOK IT AGAIN TO THE DEALERSHIP TO EXPLICITLY CHECK THE TRANSMISSION AND THEY RECOMMENDED TO CHANGE THE VALVE BODY OF THE TRANSMISSION. I HAVE NOW READ A LOT OF INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET AND THIS IS A VERY WELL KNOWN ISSUE BY VW AS WELL AS BY MANY PEOPLE WHO OWN BEETLES WITH TRIPTRONIC TRANSMISSION. VW EXTENDED THE WARRANTY OF THE VALVE BODY OF THE TRANSMISSION TO 7 YEARS OR 100.000 MILES WHICHEVER HAPPENS FIRST. UNFORTUNATELY THEY DIDN'T WANT TO COVER THE REPLACEMENT FOR MY CAR SINCE IT'S 2016 AND THE 7 YEARS WARRANTY EXPIRED IN 2012 FOR THIS CASE. THIS IS EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING AND I FEEL SCAMMED BY VW NOT WANTING TO COVER FOR AN ISSUE THAT'S VERY WELL KNOWN BY THEM. THEY SOLD DEFECTIVE CARS AND KNOW PERFECTLY WELL THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS FAILING WAY FASTER THAN IT SHOULD YET THEY NOW DISMISS THIS BECAUSE OF THE AGE OF THE CAR.

A 2005 TURBOCHARGED BEETLE CONVERTIBLE, SPONTANEOUSLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY ACCELERATED WHILE PARKING, IT JUMPED THE CURB AND TRAVELED AT MAXIMUM ACCELERATION 30 FEET UP A GRASSY SLOPE THEN THROUGH AN ALABAMA POST OFFICE WINDOW, VIOLENTLY ENTERING THE LOBBY. NO ONE WAS INJURED IN THIS INCIDENT WHICH WAS SUBSEQUENTLY TELEVISED DURING THE NEWS BROADCASTS ON ALL 3 LOCAL NETWORKS. WE HAVE IN OUR POSSESSION CLEAR PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE THAT THE BRAKE WAS BEING PRESSED HARD THROUGHOUT THIS EVENT AND THIS FACT WAS LATER CONFIRMED BY THE INSURANCE ADJUSTER WHO INVESTIGATED THE CASE. PRIOR TO THIS EVENT, ON 3 OCCASIONS WE HAD BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE LOCAL VOLKSWAGEN DEALERSHIP FOR EVALUATION OF A PERSISTENT, INTERMITTENT, THROTTLE PROBLEM WHICH THE DEALER WAS ABLE TO DUPLICATE BUT FAILED, EVEN WITH SUPPORT FROM THE ENGINEERS AT VW OF AMERICA, TO CORRECT. ON ONE OCCASION THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR AN ENTIRE WEEK AND ON ANOTHER, NEARLY 3 WEEKS. WHEN THE CAR WAS IN THEIR POSSESSION WE HAD BEEN ASSURED THAT THERE WAS IN-DEPTH COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THEM AND THE TECHNICAL DEPARTMENT AT VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA. THE CONVERTIBLE TOP WAS DOWN DURING THE INCIDENT RESULTING IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT BECOMING FILLED WITH LARGE SHARDS OF SHATTERED WINDOW GLASS. THE POLICE OFFICER INVESTIGATING THE SCENE CHARACTERIZED THE GLASS, STILL SUSPENDED IN THE FRAME ABOVE, AS "CHILLING". ATTACHED BELOW IS AN ARTICLE CONCERNING AN $ 8 MILLION DOLLAR VERDICT AWARDED LAST WEEK IN ANOTHER CASE OF UNINTENDED ACCELERATION IN A VW WITH A TURBO CHARGED ENGINE.

PROBLEMS WITH SHIFTING BETWEEN 3RD & 4TH GEARS, LURCHING, AND LAGGING. I CALLED THE DEALER, GAVE THE SYMPTOMS AND ASKED WHAT THEY THOUGHT THE PROBLEM COULD BE, THEY INSISTED THEY HADN'T HEARD OF VW'S DOING THAT. MY CAR CONTINUED TO DECLINE, BECOMING STUCK IN A GEAR, VIOLENTLY LURCHING, STALLING, AND ALL GEARS LIT UP(BRACKETED) ON THE DASH. WHEN I TOOK CAR TO VW NOV 2011, 80,000 MILES, FIRST THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T DUPLICATE, BUT I PERSISTED EXPLAINING MY HORRIBLE, LURCHING DRIVE INTO WORK, WHERE I STALLED SEVERAL TIMES ALMOST GETTING HIT, AND HOW I COULDN'T PUT THE CHILDREN I CARE FOR IN MY CAR FOR FEAR OF SOMEONE HITTING MY STALLED VEHICLE. THE VW MECHANIC TALKED ME INTO FLUSHING OUT THE TRANS AND CHECKING THE MAGNET($560). HE SAID 80% CHANCE IT WAS MY TRANS(QUOTED $6,000), EVEN AFTER THERE WERE NO METAL SHAVINGS IN THE PAN, OR SAID IT COULD BE THE VALVE BODY(QUOTED $1,600), BUT THEY WOULDN'T KNOW UNTIL AFTER THE REPAIR. I HAVE DRIVEN OTHER CARS WELL BEYOND 200,000 MILES WITHOUT HAVING A TRANS ISSUE, SO WAS SHOCKED THE TRANS COULD BE BAD AT 80,000 MILES! I TOOK GOOD CARE OF MY CAR, AND DROVE HER KINDLY. THE MECHANIC DENIED TRANS ISSUES BEING COMMON FOR BEETLES. I PAID THE $560, AND THERE WASN'T AN IMPROVEMENT. I FOUND OUT ABOUT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE VALVE BODY TOO LATE(EVEN THOUGH IT WAS IN EFFECT WHEN I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR SERVICE!) I WAS SCARED EVERY TIME I DROVE, AND IRATE ONCE I LEARNED THROUGH ONLINE SEARCH THAT FAULTY TRANSMISSIONS ARE A HUGELY KNOWN PROBLEM AND VW WON'T FESS UP AND FIX THEIR PROBLEM!! AFTER THE TRANS BLEW ON THE INTERSTATE(THAT WAS TERRIFYING HAVING A TRANS GO AT 70MPH AND I AM SO THANKFUL I WAS ABLE TO GUIDE MY CAR TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD BEFORE I WAS HIT!!), THE BEETLE SAT IN MY DRIVEWAY WHILE I STILL MADE PAYMENTS ON IT FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. I TOOK MY 2005 CONVERTIBLE BEETLE TO THE SERVICE PROVIDER BECAUSE MY R HEADLIGHT WAS OUT. THEY REFUSED TO WORK ON IT BECAUSE IT WAS A FIRE HAZARD. ALL THE WIRES TO THE HEADLIGHT WERE EXPOSED. THE PROTECTIVE PART OVER THE WIRES WERE BRITTLE AND APPEARED TO HAVE JUST ROTTED OFF. EACH WIRE WILL NEED TO BE REPAIRED BEFORE ANY ONE WILL WORK ON IT DUE TO THE HAZARD. I LOOKED AT THE LEFT HEADLIGHT AND SOMEONE HAD REPAIRED THE WIRES ALREADY ON THAT SIDE. LOTS OF ELECTRICAL TAPE AND WIRE NUTS. I STILL HAVE NO R HEADLIGHT. THE AIRBAG LIGHT HAS BEEN ON AS WELL SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE USED LAST YEAR. I OWN ANOTHER BEETLE. IT IS A 2000 AND THE AIRBAG LIGHT HAS BEEN ON FOR SEVERAL YEARS AS WELL. THE PROTECTIVE PART OVER THE WIRES WERE BRITTLE AND APPEARED TO HAVE JUST ROTTED OFF. EACH WIRE WILL NEED TO BE REPAIRED BEFORE ANY ONE WILL WORK ON IT DUE TO THE HAZARD. I LOOKED AT THE LEFT HEADLIGHT AND SOMEONE HAD REPAIRED THE WIRES ALREADY ON THAT SIDE. LOTS OF ELECTRICAL TAPE AND WIRE NUTS. I STILL HAVE NO R HEADLIGHT. THE AIRBAG LIGHT HAS BEEN ON AS WELL SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE USED LAST YEAR. I OWN ANOTHER BEETLE. IT IS A 2000 AND THE AIRBAG LIGHT HAS BEEN ON FOR SEVERAL YEARS AS WELL. I HAVE READ ABOUT WIRING PROBLEMS WITH THE AIRBAGS AND FEEL THAT IT IS ALSO A SAFETY ISSUE I FELT THAT NEEDED TO BE REPORTED. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME FOR FURTHER DETAILS.
