Frame rusting from inside out. Vehicle has been in same family since purchased new in 2000 and no recall notice was ever received. Rest of vehicle is in GREAT shape.
My 1999 Toyota Tacoma was involved in a rear end vehicle collision (the front of my vehicle struck the rear of a vehicle traveling in front of me) at a speed of approximately 40-45 mph. The roadway surface was smooth asphalt at a slight downgrade during clear/dry weather conditions on Monday 7/19/2021 at approximately 2:40 p.m. in Wythe County, VA. Neither the driver side nor passenger airbags deployed in this collision and the passenger side airbag switch was in the "ON" position. The front end damage was considerable to include destruction of front grille with radiator and other components pushed well into the engine compartment, hood, quarter panels, windshield cracked, and right front wheel joint assembly nearly detached. *Vehicle is available for inspection. *Complete failure of airbag deployment. *No indication of any airbag system issues with this vehicle. *Vehicle component has not been inspected by anyone since collision date. *No warning lamps or indicators prior to collision date. *I am the original and only owner of this vehicle since the purchase date in January, 1999. *Vehicle has 329000+ miles with certain parts of the engine being rebuilt in 2017 and prior to collision vehicle was in very good shape.

IN THE SUMMER OF 2016 I HAD NOTICED A LONG STRIP OF METAL HANGING BELOW MY 1999 TOYOTA TACOMA. IT TURNED OUT TO BE A PART OF THE FRAME. AFTER A MORE THOROUGH INVESTIGATION I HAD FOUND THE WHOLE FRAME RUSTED. THEN THROUGH RESEARCH DEEMED IT NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. IN 2009 , AFTER HEARING FROM A FRIEND(NOT TOYOTA), OF AN FRAME RUST ISSUE I MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR AN INSPECTION AT THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD IT WAS GOOD WITH NO RECOMMENDATION TO REPLACE NOR TREAT . I LEFT THINKING I HAD A GOOD ONE (FRAME) THAT WASN'T AFFECTED BY THE RUST PROBLEM. FAST FORWARD TO 2016 WHEN OBVIOUS SIGNS OF THE ISSUE BECOME PRESENT AND THEN FIND OUT THERE WAS A 15 YEAR WINDOW TO HAVE THE FRAME REPLACED, TREATED OR BOUGHT BACK. THIS WAS NOT MY DAILY DRIVER BUT DEPENDED ON FREQUENTLY FOR HAULING AND PROJECTS. SO HERE IT SITS GOING ON THREE YEARS STILL NOT KNOWING WHAT TO DO WITH IT. IT RUNS GREAT AND TOO NICE TO SCRAP. I WENT TO THE DEALER WHO SOLD ME THE VEHICLE AND WAS TOLD TO EITHER AGREE TO PAY FOR A FRAME REPLACEMENT OR JUNK THE TRUCK. I CAN'T DRIVE THE VEHICLE WITHOUT A VALID INSPECTION.

WHEN I CHANGED THE OIL IN MARCH, I NOTICED A HUGE HOLE ON THE INSIDE OF THE LEFT FRAME MEMBER, NEXT TO THE GAS TANK. I THEN CHECKED THE RIGHT SIDE, AND FOUND A LONG LINE OF RUSTED THROUGH HOLES ALONG THE BOTTOM OF THAT FRAME MEMBER. I FEEL THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY DEFECT BY THE OEM'S SELECTION OF STEEL GRADES.
I'VE HAD COMPLETE FAILURE OF BOTH SIDES- FRONT BALL JOINTS. I CHALKED UP THE THE DRIVERS SIDE FAILURE TO HAPPENSTANCE, BUT AFTER PASSENGER SIDE RECENTLY HAD THE SAME FAILURE I DID SOME INVESTIGATING AND REALIZED THIS IS A VEHICLE ASSEMBLY ISSUE. THE SAME ISSUE HAD RECALLS FOR THE LATER MODELS 2001-05 TACOMAS, I BELIEVE. NOT SURE WHY THE EARLIER MODELS WERE EXCLUDED, BUT THIS IS SCARY AND DANGEROUS TO HAVE A COMPLETE BREAKDOWN WHILE IN TRAFFIC. THE TOWS AND REPAIRS COST OVER $500 IN TOTAL FOR BOTH INSTANCES. I'M NOT LOOKING FOR REIMBURSEMENT AS MUCH AS REASSURANCE THAT MY TRUCK IS SAFE TO DRIVE. BOTH INSTANCES OCCURRED ON CITY STREETS. PASSENGER SIDE WAS UNDER 10 MPH TURNING RIGHT TOWARDS MY DRIVEWAY. THE RECENT INCIDENT WAS TURNING LEFT AT APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH THROUGH AN INTERSECTION WITH A TRAFFIC LIGHT. THE TRUCK TIRE CRUMBLED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE AND SLIDE ABOUT 30 FEET TO A STOP ALONG THE CURB.
I'VE HAD COMPLETE FAILURE OF BOTH SIDES- FRONT BALL JOINTS. I CHALKED UP THE THE DRIVERS SIDE FAILURE TO HAPPENSTANCE, BUT AFTER PASSENGER SIDE RECENTLY HAD THE SAME FAILURE I DID SOME INVESTIGATING AND REALIZED THIS IS A VEHICLE ASSEMBLY ISSUE. THE SAME ISSUE HAD RECALLS FOR THE LATER MODELS 2001-05 TACOMAS, I BELIEVE. NOT SURE WHY THE EARLIER MODELS WERE EXCLUDED, BUT THIS IS SCARY AND DANGEROUS TO HAVE A COMPLETE BREAKDOWN WHILE IN TRAFFIC. THE TOWS AND REPAIRS COST OVER $500 IN TOTAL FOR BOTH INSTANCES. I'M NOT LOOKING FOR REIMBURSEMENT AS MUCH AS REASSURANCE THAT MY TRUCK IS SAFE TO DRIVE. BOTH INSTANCES OCCURRED ON CITY STREETS. PASSENGER SIDE WAS UNDER 10 MPH TURNING RIGHT TOWARDS MY DRIVEWAY. THE FRAME HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED BY 2 SEPARATE REPAIR SHOPS AS BEING NOT DRIVABLE DUE TO HOLES. THIS MAKE AND MODEL WAS RECALLED FOR THIS REASON AND WAS BROUGHT INTO A TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER IN 2009. THE FRAME WAS INSPECTED "OK" AND NO WORK WAS DONE. THE FRAME IS NOW ROTTED AND I AM NOW BEING TOLD IT IS INELIGIBLE FOR REPAIR BECAUSE IT IS NOW OUTSIDE OF THE 15-YEAR WARRANTY WINDOW. THIS VEHICLE WAS, IN FACT, BROUGHT TO TOYOTA WITHIN THE WINDOW AND NOTHING WAS DONE ABOUT IT.
TOYOTA SENT A RECALL CARD IN 2011 TO RUST PROOF THE FRAME. THEY COVERED UP THE RUST AND SAID THE VEHICLE WAS GOOD TO GO. THE FRAME HAS RUSTED TO THE POINT THE VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. I HAVE A FRIEND THAT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND THEY PURCHASED HIS VEHICLE AND I KNOW SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE HAD THEIR FRAME'S REPLACED AT NO CHARGE BY TOYOTA. THEY AVOIDED THE ISSUE AND NOW I HAVE A UNSAFE VEHICLE.
I HAVE HAD A 1997 TOYOTA TACOMA AND THE FRAME BROKE. NOW I HAVE A 1999 TOYOTA TACOMA AND THE FRAME HAS BROKEN BECAUSE OF RUST. WE WANT TO KNOW IF THE TOYOTA IS STANDING BY AND REPAIRING OR IF THEY ARE GIVING COMPENSATION FOR THIS ISSUE. HOW DO WE FIND OUT ABOUT THIS? THE TRUCK LOOKS VERY NICE. EVERYTHING ELSE WORKS AND LOOKS LIKE NOTHING IS WRONG. SOMETHING HAS TO BE DEFECTIVE.
MY TRUCK FRAME HAD A RECALL AND TOYOTA TOLD ME IT WAS SOLID. I HAD IT RUSTPROOFED AND TODAY WHILE DRIVING HOME ON THE BACK ROAD WITH MY DOGS IN THE TRUCK MY LEAF SPRING FELL OFF THE FRAME DUE TO A ROTTED FRAME. IF I HAD BEEN ON A HIGHWAY DOING 60, I WOULD NOT BE WRITING YOU. HAD TO HAVE IT BROUGHT HOME ON A FLAT BED TRUCK AND CALL FOR A RIDE FOR ME AND THE DOGS. DISGUSTING! THEY STILL ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THESE FRAMES ON NEWER MODELS AND ARE NOT WILLING TO WORK WITH ME TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM.
FRAME RUSTED SO BAD THERE ARE HOLES, AND A BRACKET HAS BROKEN LOSE CAUSING THE WHEEL TO MOVE. WAS TOLD TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE BY MECHANIC A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO.
HOLES RUSTED THROUGH ON FRAME. BELIEVE IT'S CALLED LIFT SPRING BRACKET BROKE BECAUSE OF RUST. MECHANIC INFORMED ME A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO WHEN I WANTED TO KNOW IF RUSTED OUT HOLE IN FRAME COULD BE REPAIRED

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FRAME NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 68,000.
THE FRAME IS RUSTING OUT AND FALLING APART. THIS HAS MADE THE VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED SEVERE CORROSION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SEVERELY CORRODED AND THE REAR SUBFRAME NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 80,000.
THE FRAME OF THE TRUCK HAS COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH JUST BEFORE THE BACK DRIVERS SIDE WHEEL. IT HAS SPLIT COMPLETELY THROUGH THE METAL AND RUNS ALL THE WAY DOWN TOWARD THE FRONT . ALL THE WAY DOWN. IT SCARES ME TO DRIVE IT BNUT IT IS THE ONLY TRANPORTATION I HAVE AND NO CHOICE. THIS HAPPENED IN THE PAST YEAR.
