AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima, 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV200, LEAF, Sentra, and Pathfinder, 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60, QX60 Hybrid, and Q50 Hybrid, 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue and Infiniti Q50, 2015-2016 Nissan Murano, Murano Hybrid, and Chevrolet City Express, 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, and 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles. In these vehicles, the front seat passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash.
Remedy: Nissan will notify their owners. Chevrolet City Express owners will be notified by General Motors. Dealers will reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, and Sentra vehicles, and replace the OCS ECU in LEAF, NV200, NV200 Taxi, Pathfinder, Infiniti Q50, JX35, and QX60 and Chevrolet City Express vehicles, free of charge. Interim notices were sent to owners on May 31, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Nissan Pathfinder vehicles manufactured June 20, 2012, to November 18, 2013, 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid vehicles manufactured July 18, 2013, to November 18, 2013, 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles manufactured November 29, 2011, to June 14, 2013, and 2014 QX60 vehicles manufactured May 16, 2013, to November 18, 2013, and 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid vehicles manufactured July 18, 2013, to November 18, 2013. In the affected vehicles the hood release cable assembly may have been installed incorrectly preventing the latching claw from fully engaging. The secondary latch may remain in the open position when the hood is closed.
Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will modify the angle of the hood release mechanism to provide additional length to the release cable, free of charge. The recall began on March 9, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO REVERSE OR DRIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO TWO DIFFERENT DEALERS AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE. THE FIRST UNKNOWN DEALER CHARGED $300 TO TOW THE VEHICLE AND DID NOT HAVE A CERTIFIED HYBRID TECHNICIAN TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE FIRST TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT WAS AT 60,000 MILES WITH A WARRANTY FOR UP TO 100,000 MILES. THE SECOND TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED AT 125,000 MILES. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE REPAIRS AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED. THE MANUFACTURER PROVIDED A CASE NUMBER, BUT HAD NOT YET CALLED THE CONTACT BACK. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 180,000. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN.
THE SUN VISOR ON THE DRIVERS SIDE IS CAUSING A SAFETY HAZARD. THE PLASTIC PART INSIDE OF THE VISOR FLAT PANEL HAS BROKEN AND CANNOT HOLD UP THE VISOR AS IT IS SUPPOSED TO, OR AS DESIGNED TO FUNCTION. BEFORE IT FLOPPED DOWN COMPLETELY, IT USED TO MAKE A LARGE AND STRANGE CLICKING NOISE WHENEVER THE VISOR IS RAISED OR LOWERED. THEN IT BROKE. COMPLETELY. DRIVING IS UNSAFE ANS THE LINE OF SIGHT IS BLOCKED COMPLETELY, UNLESS RELEASED TO THE SIDE, WHICH THEN BLOCKS THE SIDE VIEW, OR RAISED USING OTHER METHODS (DUCT TAPE, VELCRO, ETC.). I HAVE CALLED THE LOCAL DEALER THAT I BOUGHT THE CAR FROM BUT REPLACING THIS NON-FUNCTIONING SAFETY HAZARDOUS ISSUE IS NOT COVERRD UNDER WARRANTY. THE ESTIMATED COST TO REPAIR IS $340/VISOR. THE PASSENGERS SIDE IS ALSO MAKING A WEIRD CLICKING NOISE AND NOW ALSO STARTING TO DROOP. BASIC RESEARCH ONLINE HAS RESULTED IN HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR CASES FOR NOT ONLY PATHFINDERS BUT ALSO OTHER MODELS FOR NISSAN. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE AND NISSAN SHOULD BE REPLACING THESE PARTS BEFORE A SERIOUS ACCIDENTS(S) OR WORSE DEATH OCCURS BECAUSE THEY HAVE SKIMMED QUALITY ON THESE PARTS.

AT OTHERS, THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT DELAY WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT BE FOLLOWED BY A VIOLENT "THUD" AND WILD LURCH FORWARD OF THE VEHICLE. MY CONCERN AROUND THIS ISSUE IS TWO FOLD; 1) ACCIDENT AVOIDANCE. IN THE EVENT OF A REQUIRED "FAST START" TO AVERT AN ACCIDENT, THE SIGNIFICANT DELAY IN ACCELERATION FOLLOWED BY THE WILD LURCH, MAY SIGNIFICANT IMPACT THE VEHICLES ABILITY TO AVERT A COLLISION. 2) LONG-TERM DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE OR COMPLETE DRIVE TRAIN. IT IS UNCLEAR TO ME IF/HOW THESE "THUDS" AND WILD LURCHES ARE AFFECTING THE MECHANICAL INTEGRITY OF THE VEHICLE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 NISSAN PATHFINDER HYBRID. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE STALLED ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT GETTING ACCURATE FUEL MILEAGE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,200.
WHILE DRIVING I NOTICED THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG STATUS LIGHT* TURNED ON INDICATING THE AIR BAG WAS TURNED OFF WHILE MY WIFE THE PASSENGER WAS SITTING IN THE SEAT WITH THE SEAT BELT BUCKLED CORRECTLY. SLAMMED ON BRAKES (EMERGENCY STOP) CENTER LANE OF HIGHWAY DUE TO CAR IN FRONT BEING CUT OFF. LARGE TRUCK BEHIND ME SO I TRIED TO IMMEDIATELY ACCELERATE TO AVOID BEING HIT FROM BEHIND. PRESSED GAS PEDAL TO FLOOR AND NOTHING HAPPENED! TOTALLY QUIET (ELECTRIC STILL ENGAGED) AND I WAS A SITTING DUCK! FORTUNATELY, TRUCK ABLE TO SWERVE INTO LEFT LANE, BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN TRAGIC. IT TOOK SEVERAL SECONDS FOR ME TO MOVE FROM STOP AND ACCELERATION WAS AS IF I WAS CASUALLY PULLING AWAY FROM A STOP SIGN! NEVER SO SCARED IN MY LIFE. ACCORDING TO NISSAN, THIS IS A CHARACTERISTIC OF THE CVT IN THE HYBRID AND THEY INSIST THERE IS NO SAFETY ISSUE!!!!! SERVICE MGR AT DEALER VALIDATED MY CONCERN WHEN HE TEST DROVE IT TRYING TO REPLICATE A PANIC STOP AS CLOSELY AS HE COULD AND THE SMALL DELAY CHARACTERISTIC OF HYBRIDS GOT MORE AND MORE EXAGGERATED WITH MORE SUDDEN STOPS. SERVICE MGR SAID HANDS ARE TIED AND CORPORATE IS NOT SAYING ANYTHING. *TR
