Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2009-2010 and 2012-2016 Honda GL1800 Gold Wing motorcycles. These motorcycles have air bag inflators assembled as part of the air bag module that may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to higher absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag module, free of charge. The recall began February 9, 2018. Owners may contact Honda Motorcycle Customer Support at 1-866-784-1870. Honda's number for this recall is KJ1.

Honda (American Honda Motor, Inc.) is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 Honda GL1800 (Gold Wing) motorcycles manufactured February 8, 2006, to May 14, 2009 originally sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or "Zone A." Additionally, unless included in "Zone A" above, Honda is recalling certain model year 2006-2008 Honda GL 1800 (Gold Wing) motorcycles manufactured May 10, 2007, to May 14, 2009 originally sold, or ever registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or "Zone B." Motorcycles not originally sold or ever registered in either Zones A or B are not subject to this safety recall. These motorcycles are equipped with an air bag inflator assembled as part of the air bag module, used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the air bag, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag module containing the inflator, free of charge. Honda distributed an interim notification to owners on July 19, 2016. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-866-784-1870. Honda's number for this recall is KA8.

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. (Honda) is recalling certain model year 2001-2010 and 2012-2015 GL1800, 2001-2005 GL1800A and 2013-2015 GL1800B motorcycles. The rear brakes of the affected motorcycles may drag after the brakes are released.
Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the secondary brake master cylinder and the rear brake master cylinder, and flush the brake fluid, free of charge. The recall began on December 7, 2015. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-866-784-1870. Honda's number for this recall is JV6. Note: This recall supercedes recall 14V-472.

THIS MOUNT WAS SOLD ON KURYAKYN 'TRANSFORMER' PASSENGER FLOORBOARD SETS, PART NUMBER 7005 FROM SEPTEMBER 15, 2008, TO PRESENT. THE FLOORBOARD MOUNT MAY CRACK AND BREAK FREE FROM THE MOUNTING BOLTS THAT SECURE THE MOUNT TO THE MOTORCYCLE.

This does not happen when the engine is still cold, or once the engine reaches normal operating temperature. This stumble becomes a safety problem when operating the vehicle at slow engine speed and making a turn. On a motorcycle the operator depends on engine response to help control the vehicle. If the engine stumbles while making a turn it increases the chance of the operator losing their balance and the bike and operator being in an accident. I have not taken my motorcycle to a dealer to have it examined. This is a well known fault in many, if not most GL1800's produced between the years 2005 and 2010 and possibly other year models as well. Dealers always respond with, Mother Honda won't do anything to correct this. This is normal and not a defect. As far as approximate date of this incident I will list today's date because this is a problem everytime I ride and the conditions to produce the stumble are met. Two aftermarket manufactures have solutions that partially work to eliminate this situation. Guhl Motors in Ephrata Pa and Electrical Connections in Knoxville Tn. Avon Cobra Chrome motorcycle tire 130/70R18. While driving on a California highway at 70 mph, I experienced a noticeable vibration in my handlebars. Thinking I may have a tire anomaly, I reduced speed and looked for a roadside area where I could stop the motorcycle and inspect the wheels and tires for damage. It took considerable effort to maintain control of the motorcycle as the front end felt as though it would “slide out” to one side or the other. After inspecting the front tire I observed a noticeable “bulb” or “blister” on the tread cap approximately 10” long. This blister was very hot in contrast to the remaining lukewarm tire. After the tire cooled, I could press my thumb against the blister, now receding, and feel the tread cap had separated from the inner core of the tire by approximately 1/2”. Because of the remote location where this tire failure occurred, I had no other choice but to ride the motorcycle 22 miles back to the last town I had passed, Wilets California, at 10-15 mph. In Wilets I was able to locate a motel and performed a tire swap the next day. This Avon tire failure occurred without warning. This same tire in a different size is now the subject of a recall for basically the same thing I experienced. I propose the aforementioned tire recall be expanded to include all Avon Cobra Chrome motorcycle tires regardless of size. Note: I also replaced the Avon Cobra Chrome on the rear of the motorcycle at the same time because we felt that it too could fail without warning.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO ATLANTIC CYCLE & POWER DEALER (4580 CRAIN HWY, WHITE PLAINS, MD 20695, (301) 392-1770) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAR MASTER CYLINDER FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE RECURRED FOUR TIMES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT TO TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AND A CASE WAS OPENED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 13,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. *TR
AT 35 TO 40 MILES PER HOUR, I COULD NOT ACCELERATE TO 45. ENGINE SOUNDED STRAINED AND I SMELLED BURNING SMELL. MY HAND BRAKE BECAME LOCKED OPEN WITHOUT ANY ABILITY TO PRESS DOWN ON THE BRAKES. I HAD TO PULL OVER AND WAS STRANDED IN LEFT TURN LANE. I KNEW FROM PREVIOUS RE-CALL NOTICE THAT THE BRAKES CAN LOCK, BUT MY BIKE HAD THE RE-CALL FIXED WHERE THE MASTER CYLINDER WAS REPLACED, IT STILL FAILED. MY BIKE WAS TOWED IN TODAY TO THE DEALERSHIP AND I WILL NOT HEAR UNTIL THEY LOOK AT IT. I KNOW IT WAS THE BRAKES THOUGH AND I AM REALLY UPSET THAT THE RE-CALL FIX MAY NOT BE A FIX AT ALL. I WAS ON THE ROAD GOING STRAIGHT IN MOTION WHEN THIS HAPPENED.
THREE MONTHS AGO I BOUGHT A 2010 GOLDWING WITH ONLY 11,000 MILES ON IT. RODE IT FOR A MONTH AND THE TRANSMMISON GOING INTO 5TH GEAR IS SLIPPING. TAKING IT TO HONDA AND THEY HAVE DETERMINED THE TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THEY HAVE AGREED TO PAY FOR THE PARTS. WHICH THE LABOR IS CRAZY AND COST MORE THAN THE PARTS. WHICH I'M VERY GRATEFUL THAT THEY HAVE DONE THAT. BUT IT APPEARS THAT THIS IS A KNOW DEFECT WHY HAS THERE NOT BEEN A RECALL ON THE TRANSMISSION? IT WOULD BE NICE TO KNOW THESE DEFECTS BEFORE NOT AFTER HAVING TO DISH OUT A LOT OF OF MONEY ON A PRETTY MUCH NEW GOLDWING. IF THEY COULD AT LEAST HONOR A PART OF THE LABOR COST IT WOULD HELP. HANDLE BARS WILL START TO SHAKE AND WOBBLE. THIS CAN HAPPEN WHEN GOING INTO A TURN OR JUST GOING DOWN THE ROAD. IT WILL STOP AFTER THE TURN OR I JUST PUT A TIGHTER GRIP ON THE HANDLE BARS. IT CAN FEEL LIKE THE MOTORCYCLE IS GOING OUT OF CONTROL. I HAVE TAKEN THE MOTORCYCLE TO TWO DIFFERENT DEALERS AND WAS TOLD THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM THAT HONDA WILL NOT FIX. *TR
WITHIN THE FIRST MONTHS OF RIDING, I BEGAN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE MULTI FUNCTIONING DISPLAY (MFD) THE DISPLAY GOES BLANK AT START UP AND AT TRAVELING SPEEDS. LOSING ALL DATA OF MILEAGE, GPS DIRECTIONS, RADIO FUNCTION. I HAVE REPORTED THE PROBLEMS SEVERAL TIMES, TO THE SERVICE MANAGER. THEY HELD ONTO MY BIKE FOR SEVERAL DAYS, NOTHING WAS DONE, AND THE PROBLEMS PERSISTED. I WAS TOLD, 'WE LOOKED AT YOUR BIKE AND WE CANNOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM.' I CONTINUED MY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE PROBLEMS WITH MY MULTI FUNCTIONING DISPLAY. I CALLED HONDA CUSTOMER SERVICE, WITH NO RESULTS. THIS PROBLEMS HAPPENS SINCE NEW AND I LEARNED THAT SEVERAL OTHER OWNERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS. WHAT WAS MOST HORRIFIC, IN JUNE OF 2013, I ATTEMPTED TO PURCHASE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. I WAS INFORMED THAT MY BIKE'S WARRANTY EXPIRED IN MAY OF 2013. ALTHOUGH I PURCHASED MY BIKE IN AUGUST 2010, THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY EXPIRED MAY OF 2013; A FULL THREE MONTHS BEFORE THE ORIGINAL DATE OF MY PURCHASE. NOW I MUST PAY $2,500 TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. *TR

HONDA CORPORATION CUSTOMER SERVICE IS SAYING THAT THE BIKE IS OUT OF WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH IT IS JUST A FEW DAYS OUT THEY WILL NOT DO ANYTHING FOR ME AND THE BIKE WAS MODIFIED SO THEY ARE WASHING THEIR HANDS OF THE PROBLEM. I HAD THEM PUT NEW BRAKES ON AT THE DEALER AND FLUSH THE ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM. IT TOOK THEM A WEEK TO FIX IT 11/09/13 THE JOB WAS DONE NOW 12/02/13 THE BRAKES LOCKED UP HAD A HOT BURNING SMELL AND THE BRAKE TEMPERATURE OF THE REAR BRAKES WERE AT 330 DEGREES WHEN I LEFT IT AT THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP HAS DONE EVERYTHING THEY COULD FOR ME. SO MY COMPLAINT IS WITH HONDA CORPORATE. HONDA CORPORATE RESPONSES WERE 1. THE CUSTOMER RIDES WITH HIS FOOT ON THE BRAKE 2. THE BIKE IS OUT OF WARRANTY 3. THE BIKE WAS MODIFIED 4. THE DECISION HAS BEEN MADE BY HONDA THAT THEY WILL DO NOTHING FOR CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. I BELIEVE THE BRAKES WEARING OUT PREMATURELY AND NOW THE BRAKES BEING LOCKED UP ARE ALL A RESULT OF THE FAILED PART THAT IS A KNOWN DEFECT AND HONDA IS REFUSING TO REPAIR THE PARTS THAT ARE WEARING OUT EARLY OR DO ANYTHING FOR CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. BETWEEN THE RECALL AND THE PROBLEM THE MOTORCYCLE WAS REVISED TWICE FOR 8000 AND 12000 MILES. DURING THESE REVISIONS THE BRAKES SHOULD HAVE BEEN CHECKED , THEY WERE NOT . IMAGINE WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM ON THE ROAD AT 55 MILES AN HOUR AND THE BRAKES BLOCK WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST ME TO DO SINCE THE MANUFACTURER , HONDA AND THE DEALER ARE NOT VERY HELPFUL . THE CYCLE HAS A FRONT END WOBBLE AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 35-45. IT REQUIRES THAT BOTH HANDS ARE KEPT ON THE HANDLEBARS TO AVOID A CRASH. IF I LET GO WITH ONE HAND THE WOBBLE INCREASES. I THINK THE WOBBLE INCREASES THE WEAR ON THE FRONT TIRE AND CAN ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO DAMAGE OF OTHER ITEMS. IT IS ALWAYS UNCOMFORTABLE ESPECIALLY GOING AROUND CORNERS WHERE I HAVE TO FIGHT THE WOBBLE WITH BOTH HANDS. THE FRONT TIRE WAS CHANGED AND THE STEERING BEARINGS CHECKED FOR TIGHTNESS. WHEN I APPLIED REAR BRAKE, I COULD FEEL A RAPID VIBRATION IN THE BRAKE PEDAL. IT VIBRATED THE ENTIRE BIKE. THE FAIRING RATTLED FROM THE VIBRATION. THIS DID NOT HAPPEN ON MY 2008 GOLDWING AND IT DID NOT HAPPEN ON THE 2010 GOLDWING UNTIL AFTER THEY DID THE RECALL ON THE BRAKES. AFTER THE RECALL IT STARTED DOING IT. I DID NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM FOR THE FIRST 19,000 MILES. THE FACTORY REP SAID THAT IT WAS ENGINEERED THAT WAY AND IT WAS SUPPOSE TO DO IT BUT HAD NO ANSWER WHY IT DIDN'T DO IT BEFORE. SOMEONE SAID THEY SPOKE TO A HONDA SERVICE REP AND HE TOLD THEM THAT HONDA IS WELL AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT HAS NO INTENTION OF DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I TOOK MY BIKE TO TWO DIFFERENT HONDA SERVICE DEPARTMENTS. BOTH SERVICE MANAGERS AGREED THAT THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG. THE HONDA REP DENIES THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG BUT EVERYONE KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM. IF BRAKES FAIL AND SOMEONE IS KILLED, I HOPE HONDA IS SUED OUT OF BUSINESS BECAUSE THEY KNOW THERE IS A PROBLEM. *TR

MOTORCYCLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE LOCAL DEALER FOR RECALL INSPECTION FOR THE REAR BRAKE CYLINDER. DEALER PERFORMED INSPECTION AND INFORMED ME THAT THE MOTORCYCLE PASSED INSPECTION AND COULD BE PICKED UP. APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE AFTER DEPARTING THE DEALERSHIP THE MOTORCYCLE BEGAN FEELING SLUGGISH AND I PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED THEY WERE EXTREMELY GRABBY AND UPON STOPPING I NOTICED A STRONG BRAKE ODOR. AFTER PULLING TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD I INSPECTED THE MOTORCYCLE AND FOUND THE REAR BRAKE DISC VERY HOT WITH A BURNT BRAKE ODOR ALONG WITH VISIBLE SCUFFING TO THE BRAKE DISC. I RETURNED THE BIKE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS INFORMED THAT THEY COULD FIND NO CAUSE FOR THE PROBLEM. I CONTACTED AMERICAN HONDA AND REPORTED THE ISSUE AND WAS TOLD THEY WOULD LOOK INTO THE ISSUE. THE BIKE HAS BEEN AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR TWO WEEKS AND THERE HAS BEEN NO ACTION REGARDING THE REPORTED PROBLEM. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 HONDA GOLDWING. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTED OUT OF GEAR AND THE CONTACT ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE SHIFTED BACK INTO THE CORRECT GEAR AFTER A FEW SECONDS. THE DEALER WAS NOT NOTIFIED AND THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 16,400. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
WHILE TRAVELING AT 70 MPH ON I-95 NORTHBOUND JUST NORTH OF EXIT 121 IN 5TH GEAR, I EXPERIENCED AN UNEXPECTED AND ALARMING ENGINE RPM CHANGE, CAUSING ME TO DIVERT MY ATTENTION FROM THE ROADWAY AHEAD TO MY INSTRUMENT PANEL IN AN EFFORT TO DETERMINE WHAT HAD OCCURRED.
