BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2017 F800R and F800GT motorcycles, 2014-2018 R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure motorcycles, 2016-2017 S1000XR motorcycles and 2015-2017 R1200R and R1200RS, 2008-2012 F650GS, 2008-2018 F800GS, and 2014-2017 F800GS Adventure motorcycles. When equipped with the optional aluminum luggage cases, the rear reflex reflectors may be partially blocked. The aluminum case mounts for the R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure may also partially block the reflectors. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will install reflectors on the cases or for the case mounts, an additional bracket with rear reflex reflectors, free of charge. The recall began October 16, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:DISC
BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN 2008 THROUGH 2010 F 650 GS MOTORCYCLES MANUFACTURED FROM JANUARY 11, 2008, THROUGH DECEMBER 8, 2009. A WASHER MAY INTERFERE WITH THE FRONT DISC BRAKE FASTENERS' TORQUE. AS A RESULT, OVER TIME, A FASTENER OR MUTIPLE FASTENERS COULD BECOME LOOSE, ALLOWING THE BRAKE DISC TO BECOME LOOSE.
Remedy: BMW WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL REPAIR THE VEHICLES FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 13, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-525-7417.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008 THROUGH 2010 F650 GS AND F800 GS MOTORCYCLES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN JANUARY 2008 AND DECEMBER 2009. DURING ENGINE OPERATION, A VACUUM IS CREATED IN ORDER TO DRAW FRESH AIR INTO THE CANISTER. THIS AIR THEN MIXES WITH THE FUEL VAPORS CAPTURED BY THE CANISTER, AND IS SUBSEQUENTLY COMBUSTED. DUE TO THE ROUTING OF THE VENTILATION HOSE, WATER NEAR THE END OF THE HOSE COULD BE DRAWN INTO THE CHARCOAL CANISTER.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND ADD AN ADDITIONAL HOSE AND ROUTE IT SUCH THAT THE PRESENT DEFECT IS PREVENTED. THIS REMEDY WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 13, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.

THREE INCIDENTS ON THE SAME DAY WITHIN 35 MILES. THE AMBIENT AIR TEMPERATURE WAS 95 DEGREES FOR THE FIRST INCIDENT, AND IN THE MID- 80S (WHILE GRADUALLY RISING IN ALTITUDE ON A MOUNTAIN ROAD) FOR THE 2ND AND 3RD. THE GAS TANK WAS HALF EMPTY-ABOUT 2 GALLONS REMAINING: 1ST INCIDENT) RODE THREE MILES ON A FLAT, PAVED ROAD. STOPPED AND TURNED OFF IGNITION TO DISABLE ABS AT START OF DIRT ROAD. BMW WOULD NOT RESTART FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES. 2ND & 3RD INCIDENTS) 10 MILES LATER WHILE RIDING IN 2ND OR 3RD GEAR IN THE RANGE OF 20 - 30 MPH, THE BMW LOST ALL POWER AND THE ENGINE STOPPED. I WAS ABLE TO RESTART BMW AFTER SEVERAL MINUTES EACH TIME. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE: HAD THE ENGINE STOPPED WHILE TURNING A CORNER AT A BUSY INTERSECTION IN A CITY, THE MOTORCYCLE COULD FALL OVER WITHOUT POWER. ALSO, WITHOUT POWER, A RIDER MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO SAFELY MANEUVER AWAY FROM TRAFFIC. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN WELL REPORTED ON BMW OWNER AND RIDER FORUMS IN THE U.S., IN THE U.K. AND IN AUSTRALIA. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 BMW R1200RT MOTORCYCLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT WOULD SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND WHEN RESTARTING, THE VEHICLE WOULD RESUME NORMAL OPERATION. THE DEALER ADVISED THERE WAS A DEFECTIVE CAM GEAR IN HIS YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE DEALER ADVISED THE TOOL NEEDED TO MAKE THE REPAIR TO THE VEHICLE WAS NOT AVAILABLE YET WAS EXPECTING IT TO ARRIVE WITHIN TWO WEEKS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BUT DID NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 700.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 BMW F650 GS MOTORCYCLE. THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE WOULD STALL WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS UNDER NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 09V499000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) BUT DID NOT CORRECT THE FAILURE. AFTER REPAIRS, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING WHILE TRAVELING AT 55 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER IN CANADA WHERE THE HOSES WERE RE-ROUTED. THE FAILURE DID NOT RECUR. THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 3,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 10,600.
