Full Narrative

On August 3, 2012, about 0900 local, an Airbus A319, registration EI-IMS, operated by Alitalia Airlines landed in Rome, Italy (LIRF) from Venezia, Italy (LIPZ).

During a left turn for the stand at taxi in, the flight crew experienced abnormal skidding from the nose landing gear. Initial inspection found the left nose wheel assembly was completely missing with damage to nose landing gear axle area. The nose wheel assembly and debris was found on runway 16R (landing runway).

At the time of the incident the airplane was carrying 95 passengers and 5 crew members. There were no reported injuries from this incident.

The Agenzia Nazionale per la Sicurezza del Volo (ANSV)is investigating the incident. As the state of manufacturer of some of the airplanes components, the NTSB has designated a US Accredited Representative under the provisions of Annex 13 to the Convention on Civil Aviation to assist the ANSV in their invesitigation.
