Event Location

Probable Cause

The pilot’s failure to maintain airplane control while landing in a crosswind.

Full Narrative

The pilot reported that while landing in a left crosswind, the right main landing gear touched down first, followed by the left main landing gear. The airplane then turned left and the pilot added power for a go-around. The pilot performed a go-around and the second landing was uneventful. Subsequent examination of the airplane by a Federal Aviation Administration inspector revealed that the left wing had been substantially damaged due to contact with the runway. The pilot further stated that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions with the airplane. Review of weather data revealed that at the time of the landing, the wind was from about 50 degrees left of runway centerline at 12 knots.
