Event Location
Probable Cause
The pilot's improper airspeed during landing, which resulted in a runway overrun, and his delayed decision to execute a go-around.
Full Narrative
The pilot stated that during landing on runway 09 (2,772 feet long by 150 feet wide, asphalt/turf), the airplane "touched down a little bit fast..." He felt he could stop the airplane within the remaining runway; however, "by the time I realized that I could not stop on time it was too late to pull up..." Subsequently, the airplane departed the end of the runway and impacted a ditch. The pilot reported no mechanical problems with the airplane prior to the accident and reported he should have performed a go-around. Examination of the airplane revealed the nose landing gear was collapsed, the firewall was bent, and the left wing was bent aft.
