Event Location

Probable Cause

The pilot's failure to maintain directional control during landing, which resulted in a runway excursion and the nose landing gear collapsing.

Full Narrative

The pilot of the tailwheel-equipped airplane reported that, during landing, as the airplane touched down, the airplane veered to the right. He tried to correct with full aft stick, full right aileron and left brake, but the airplane continued to yaw to the right, the left main landing gear collapsed, and the airplane came to rest at the right edge of the runway.

The airplane sustained substantial damage to the left wing and fuselage.

The pilot reported that there were no preimpact mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

About the time of the accident, the automated weather reporting station located on the airport, reported that the wind was from 020° at 5 knots. The pilot was landing the airplane on runway 35.
